Water Qi (Pathological Fluid Accumulation)
After recovery from a major illness, if edema occurs below the waist, Muli Zexie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder) is indicated. (Cheng Wuji's commentary: After recovery from a major illness, Spleen-Stomach Qi is deficient and cannot control Kidney Water, causing it to overflow into the Lower Jiao, resulting in edema below the waist. The *Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: "For edema below the waist, promote urination." Muli Zexie San promotes urination to dissipate water accumulation.)
Formula for Muli Zexie San (Oyster Shell and Alisma Powder)
Muli (Oyster Shell, calcined), Zexia (Alisma Rhizome), Gualougen (Trichosanthes Root), Shuqi (Patrinia Herb, washed to remove soil), Tingli (Descurainia Seed or Lepidium Seed, calcined), Shanglugen (Phytolacca Root, calcined), Haizao (Sargassum Thallus, washed to remove saltiness). All above ingredients are equal in dosage. The seven herbs are separately crushed and sifted into a powder, then further ground in a mortar. Take one cubic inch measure with rice water, three times daily. Discontinue when urination becomes smooth. (The salty flavor induces vomiting and purging; the salinity of Oyster Shell, Alisma, and Sargassum drains water qi. The *Nei Jing* states: "When dampness abounds internally, use neutral drugs as the main treatment, assisted by sour and pungent drugs, and bitter drugs to drain." The sour, pungent, and bitter properties of Patrinia, Descurainia/Lepidium, Trichosanthes, and Phytolacca guide out swelling and dampness.)
Excessive Saliva
After recovery from a major illness, if there is excessive saliva production that persists for a long time, it indicates Cold in the Stomach. Pill medication should be used to warm it; Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is suitable. (Cheng Wuji's commentary: After sweating, Yang Qi is insufficient, leading to deficiency-cold in the Stomach which fails to transform fluids, causing persistent saliva. Lizhong Wan warms the Stomach; adding Yizhiren (Bitter Apricot Seed) is even better.)
*Qianjin Fang* records: For dry mouth and excessive saliva or sore throat after recovery, use ten Jujubes and three Smoked Plums, pounded finely, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of a date pit. Hold in the mouth and swallow slowly. If sore throat persists, soak Dougen (Membranous Melastoma Root) in cool water, hold in the mouth, and swallow the bitter juice.
Desire to Vomit
After the resolution of Shaoyang disease (or Cold Damage), if the patient is emaciated, short of breath, and experiences rebellious Qi desiring to vomit, Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) is indicated. (Cheng Wuji's commentary: After resolution, fluid deficiency causes emaciation, and residual heat remains. Heat injures Qi, causing shortness of breath; rebellious Qi causes the desire to vomit. Zhuye Shigao Tang regulates the Stomach and clears heat.)
Formula for Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction)
Zhuye (Bamboo Leaves, two handfuls), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, half a jin, washed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, three liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, two liang), Jingsmi (Glutinous Rice, half a sheng), Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber, one sheng, heart removed). The seven herbs are boiled in ten dou of water to obtain six sheng. Remove dregs, add glutinous rice, boil until rice is cooked and soup is ready. Remove rice. Take one sheng warm, three times daily. (Pungent and sweet disperse to clear heat; the sweet and pungent nature of Bamboo Leaves, Gypsum, and Licorice disperses residual heat. Sweet moderates the Spleen and benefits Qi; the sweetness of Ophiopogon, Ginseng, and Glutinous Rice supplements insufficiency. Pungency disperses; Banxia's pungency disperses rebellious Qi.)
Evening Mild Irritability
If the patient's pulse has normalized but they feel mild irritability at dusk, it is because the disease has just resolved, and forcing food intake weakens the Spleen-Stomach Qi, which cannot digest food, causing mild irritability. Reducing food intake will lead to recovery. (The Yangming channel governs the Shen, You, and Xu hours. Food retention in the Stomach causes evening irritability; mild purging should be used to reduce retained grain, but here only Zhizi Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction) is used; if fullness and hardness exist, add Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange).) Confusion and Dizziness
After Febrile Disease sweating resolves, if the patient gradually feels confused and unconscious, as if possessed, or speaks incorrectly and groans, this is due to incomplete sweating and pathogenic heat hiding in the Pericardium. *Huoren Shu* uses Zhima Tang (Anemarrhena and Ephedra Decoction) to induce sweating, but considering post-illness Blood and Qi deficiency, sweating is contraindicated. If the pulse is weak and the person is deficient, only Shiwei Wendan Tang (Ten-Ingredient Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) plus Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) is indicated.
