If the pulse shows intermittent pauses (Dai Mai, intermittent pulse) and is imperceptible at the Cun Kou (Radial artery location), with cold extremities and blocked Qi movement in the pulse, Yunmen (LU 2) governs it. Cold in the chest with Dai Mai appearing intermittently, heaviness in the upper body and lightness in the lower body, inability of the feet to touch the ground, distension of the lower abdomen, Qi rushing upward to the heart, chest fullness, coughing up blood-stained sputum, Rangu (KI 2) governs it.
The Yellow Emperor asked: From where does one acquire epilepsy from birth? Qibo replied: This originates during fetal development when the mother frequently experiences great fright. The Qi ascends but fails to descend, causing Essence and Qi to congregate, thus causing the child to develop epilepsy. When the disease affects the Yang meridians, accompanied by alternating chills and fever in all muscle divisions, it is named Mania (Kuang). Acupuncture should be used to reduce excess in the vessels; observe until the heat in the muscle divisions subsides, then stop treatment. If the initial onset occurs once a year without treatment, or once a month without treatment, but occurs four to five times a month, it is named Epilepsy (Dian Ji). Puncture the various muscle divisions; for those with particularly cold pulses, apply tonification. (Su Wen states: For various muscle divisions and vessels without cold, regulate with needles until the disease resolves.) Asked: How is mania with rage generated? Answered: It arises from Yang. Asked: How does Yang cause mania? Answered: Yang Qi, due to sudden frustration and difficulty in expansion, manifests this pattern. Asked: How to treat it? Answered: Reducing food intake will cure it. Food enters Yin, and Qi grows in Yang; thus, reducing food intake cures it. Administer Iron Dust Decoction (Sheng Tie Luo Yin) as a subsequent drink. Iron Dust (Sheng Tie Luo) descends Qi and calms the spirit (Su Wen reads "Ji" instead of "Hou"). In epilepsy, if the pulse is large and slippery, it will resolve spontaneously over time; if small, firm, and rapid, death is inevitable and untreatable. (Another version states: sinking, small, rapid, and solid pulse indicates death and untreatability; small, firm, and rapid pulse is also untreatable). In epilepsy, a deficient pulse is treatable; an excess pulse indicates death. Jue syndrome transforming into epilepsy. Guan Ju (Su Wen reads Huang Dan, Jaundice), acute Jue syndrome, epilepsy, and mania are generated by long-term reversal of Qi. Imbalance of the Five Zang organs and blockage of the Six Fu organs generate these conditions. At the onset of epilepsy, there is initially unhappiness, heavy head and pain, staring eyes, severe redness of the eyeballs, followed by extreme fatigue and vexation. Observe the face, select Hand Taiyang and Hand Taiyin points, and stop when blood color changes. When epilepsy begins with mouth traction, crying, panting, and palpitations, observe Hand Yangming and Hand Taiyang points; attack the stronger side (one text says left) on the opposite side (one text says right), stopping when blood color changes. Those treating epilepsy should live with the patient, observe the appropriate acupoints, and when the disease strikes, examine the patient and drain any excess. Place the extracted blood in a gourd vessel; at the time of seizure, the blood moves independently; if it does not move, moxibustion on the Qionggu (coccyx) for thirty moxa cones is applied. Qionggu refers to the coccyx. In bone epilepsy, the mandible, teeth, and all Shu points in the muscle divisions are full, bones are rigid and straight, sweating occurs with vexation and oppression, excessive vomiting of saliva and foam, and downward leakage of Qi; this is untreatable. In pulse epilepsy, sudden collapse occurs, pulses in the four limbs are distended and flaccid, and the main pulse is full; puncture all to bleed. If not full, moxa the Taiyang channels along the neck, and moxa the Dai Mai three inches from the waist, at the root Shu points of muscle divisions. Excessive vomiting of saliva and foam with downward leakage of Qi is untreatable. In tendon epilepsy, the body curls and contracts, and the pulse is large; puncture the Da Shu point of the major channel in the neck. Excessive vomiting of saliva and foam with downward leakage of Qi is untreatable. At the onset of mania, there is initial self-sorrow, forgetfulness, irritability, and fear, caused by worry and hunger. Treat by first selecting Hand Taiyin and Hand Yangming points, stopping when blood color changes, then selecting Foot Taiyin and Foot Yangming points. At the onset of mania, there is little sleep, lack of appetite, arrogance, self-perceived wisdom, and self-perceived nobility. Cursing day and night without rest. Treat by selecting Hand Yangming, Hand Taiyin, and Hand Taiyang points. In mania, visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations, and frequent shouting are caused by deficiency of Qi. Treat by selecting Hand Taiyang, Hand Taiyin, and Hand Yangming points, and the Shaoyin point under the tongue; select all points with vigorous pulses and release those without. Mania characterized by easy fright, laughter, singing, joy, and ceaseless wandering is caused by great fright. Treat by selecting Hand Yangming, Hand Taiyin, and Hand Taiyang points. Mania with visual and auditory hallucinations and frequent shouting is caused by deficiency of Qi. Treat by selecting Hand Taiyin and Hand Yangming points, Foot Taiyang, and points on both sides of the head at the mandible. Mania with polyphagia, seeing spirits and ghosts, and suppressed laughter is caused by excessive joy. Treat by selecting Foot Taiyin, Foot Yangming, and Foot Taiyang points, followed by Hand Taiyin, Hand Yangming, and Hand Taiyang points. For newly onset mania not yet exhibiting these symptoms, first select the Ququan points on both sides of the arteries and excess points to bleed; relief comes quickly. If not relieved, follow standard methods and moxa the tail bone curvature for twenty cones. The bone refers to the curved part of the coccyx.
