Patient A: Liver jue (Liver Qi rebellion) invading the stomach and diaphragm.
Prescription: Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Ginger Juice, Apricot Seed (Xingren), Trichosanthes Peel (Gualou Pi), Golden Bell Fruit (Jinlingzi), Cyperus Rhizome (Yanhu), Fermented Soybean (Xiangdouchi), White Cardamom Seed (Baikou).
Patient Bao (33 years old): Dissatisfaction in mood causes Yang Qi to stagnate and surge in the middle jiao, transforming into internal wind, causing dizziness and rotation. Symptoms include palpitations, salivation, and numbness of the left limbs. The liver is the source of the disease, and the stomach is where the disease transmits. Alcohol consumption damages the middle qi, leading to loose stools. Treatment proposes harmonizing the liver and stomach.
Prescription: Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), Fried Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Gastrodia Tuber (Tianma), Dendrobium Stem (Shihu), Fritillaria Bulb (Chuanbei), Ground Beech Bark (Digupi).
Patient Wu: Pulse is rapid on the left and soggy on the right. Qi obstruction causes heart pain. Treatment nourishes the stomach and calms the liver.
Prescription: Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Poria (Fuling), Fried Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Biota Seed (Baiziren), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi), Green Tangerina Peel (Qingjuye).
Patient Gu (51 years old): Pulse is wiry. Obstruction and pain in the epigastrium. Clear fluid overflows after midnight, surging from the lower abdomen. This is clearly a symptom of Liver jue and stomach pain.
Prescription: Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu, 0.5 qian), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi, 1 qian), Cyperus Rhizome (Yanhu, 1 qian), Poria (Fuling, 3 qian), Cinnamon Twig Wood (Guizhi Mu, 0.5 qian), Galangal Rhizome (Gaoliangjiang, 1 qian).
Patient C (29 years old): Pulse is wiry on the left and choppy on the right. Pain in the middle epigastrium radiating to the lower abdomen. Disease is in the liver and stomach.
Prescription: Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi), Green Tangerine Peel (Qingpi), Raw Cyperus Rhizome (Sheng Xiangfu), Small Fennel (Xiaohui), Poria (Fuling), Jujube (Nanzao).
Patient D (32 years old): White tongue coating, nausea, overflow of liquid foam. Disease is in the liver and stomach. Treatment should unblock Yang and drain turbidity.
Prescription: Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu, 0.7 fen), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 1 qian), Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi, 3 fen), Poria (Fuling, 3 qian), Jujube (Nanzao, 1 piece).
Patient Ren (38 years old): This is due to thwarted emotions. Liver Wood Qi rebels against the stomach, causing vomiting and diaphragmatic distension. Laughing and talking happily can resolve it. Stagnant blood-invigorating drugs are the very thing that aggravates the disease.
Prescription: Cyperus Rhizome (Yanhu), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi), Perilla Stem (Sugeng), Lindera Root (Wuyao), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Red Cardamom Seed (Hongdoukou).
Patient Wang (43 years old): Epigastric pain, locally elevated and hard. Vomiting clear saliva and bloody foam, unable to swallow even a drop of water. Cold limbs, numb skin and muscles. Beating the back slightly relieves the condition. This belongs to Liver jue invading the stomach.
Prescription: Open-mouth Evodia Fruit (Koukou Wuzhuyu), Golden Bell Fruit (Jinlingzi), Fried Cyperus Rhizome (Chao Yanhu), Raw Cyperus Rhizome (Sheng Xiangfu), Galangal Rhizome (Gaoliangjiang), Southern Hawthorn Fruit (Nanshan Zha).
Patient E: Pulse is wiry on the left. Insomnia. Qi rises from the left. Treatment drains the liver and harmonizes the stomach.
Prescription: Raw Left Oyster Shell (Sheng Zuomuli, 5 qian), Toosendan Fruit Meat (Chuanlianzi Rou, 1 qian), Huazhou Tangerina Peel (Huazhou Juhong, 1.5 qian), Poria (Fuling, 3 qian), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie, 1 qian).
Patient F: Pulse is slow, wiry on the left. Morning fatigue and reduced appetite. During the period when Earth Qi is prosperous, urgently regulate the spleen and stomach. Use Wuji Tang removing Licorice Root (Gancao), adding Rice Sprout (Guya).
Patient Cheng (56 years old): Mental exertion disturbs the spirit, causing frequent dreams. Fingers tremble slightly during pulse diagnosis. Phlegm increases with food intake. When Minister Fire and Sovereign Fire move, they consume essence; although food is taken, the body remains emaciated. First, regulate the Yangming Stomach to control the Jueyin Liver, do not be distracted.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Poria (Fuling), Acorus Rhizome (Shichangpu).
Patient G: Unblock and tonify Yangming Stomach, harmonize Jueyin Liver.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Galangal Rhizome (Gaoliangjiang), Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao).
Patient H (41 years old): Liver rebellion invades the stomach, causing epigastric pain and abdominal borborygmus. Qi pushes up to the throat.
Prescription: Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi), Cinnamon Twig Wood (Guizhi Mu), Light Dried Ginger (Dan Ganjiang), Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao), Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Chinese Plum (Wumei), Poria (Fuling).
Patient Cheng (52 years old): Housework causes irritability and anger, making Liver Qi prone to rebellion. Dry heaving with sour taste. Wood invades Stomach Earth, Wind-Wood moves, causing morning diarrhea, poor appetite, emaciation, and deficient pulse. First propose calming the stomach and harmonizing the liver.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Poria (Fuling), Papaya Fruit (Mugua), Raw Alpinia Katsumadai Seed (Sheng Yizhi), Roasted Ginger (Weijiang).
Patient Hua (23 years old): It is said that Qi attacks the hypochondrium causing distension, occurring in spring and resolving in autumn. This internally corresponds to Liver Wood. Overeating leads to disharmony, and Liver transmits to Stomach.
Prescription: Charred Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Jiao Baizhu), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Raw Cyperus Rhizome (Sheng Xiangfu), Broadleaf Tangerina Peel (Guangpi).
Pill made with dry lotus leaf decoction.
Patient Mao: Slightly yellow eyes, yellow tongue coating, thirst and irritability, stiff and solid hypochondrium, pulling pain throughout the body upon breathing. Originating from frequent vomiting of food and phlegm-fluids, followed by chest and epigastric pain and distension. This is Liver Wood invading the Stomach, obstruction of all Qi. Although usually suitable for warming and tonifying, current treatment should unblock the Qi level.
Prescription: Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia, 1.5 qian), Broadleaf Tangerina Peel White (Guangpi Bai, 1 qian), Large Apricot Seed (Da Xingren, 10 grains), White Cardamom Seed (Baikou Ren, 8 fen), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi, 1 qian), Fried Cyperus Rhizome (Chao Yanhu, 1 qian), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 5 fen), Earth Trichosanthes Peel (Tu Gualou Pi, 1 qian).
Second visit: Restlessness and choking pain in the heart. Heat-phlegm in the Qi level is not yet resolved. Use the Wendan method.
Prescription: Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru, 1 qian fried yellow), Fried Pinellia Rhizoma (Chao Banxia, 1 qian), Poria (Fuling, 1.5 qian), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi, 1 qian), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng, 8 fen), Tangerina Peel (Juhong, 1 qian), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, 3 fen).
Patient Wang (13 years old): Pi accumulation is heavy and has substance. Now pain rises and becomes tangible; when pain resolves, no trace remains. Occurs at night, surging upward, wanting to vomit but cannot. Clearly, Jue Qi attacks the stomach, caused by anger and forced eating, leading to Qi stagnation and disorder. At onset, use Hejian Jinlingzi San, combined with unblocking Yangming stagnation to cure.
Prescription: Golden Bell Fruit (Jinlingzi), Cyperus Rhizome (Yanhu), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Trichosanthes Peel (Gualou Pi), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), Tangerina Peel (Juhong).
Patient Qin (27 years old): Long face, thin body, constitution of Wood and Fire. Qi obstructs in the epigastrium, poor appetite and painful eating, stomach gate rebels. This is a sign of excessive Qi and Fire. Avoid drying heat that steals fluids. Treatment calms the liver and harmonizes the stomach.
Prescription: Costus Root (Xiangjiu Xiang), Curcuma Rhizome (Yujin), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), Tangerina Peel (Juhong), Loquat Leaf (Pipaye), Perilla Seed (Suzi), Fritillaria Bulb (Chuanbeimu), Ginger Peel (Jiangpi).
Patient Zhu (50 years old): Decline after half a century, often due to spirit injury and worry. In the fourth month of summer, atmospheric Qi exerts itself, leading to loose stools. In late summer, heat consumes Qi. Chills and fever arise because root Qi is weak, allowing Six Qi to invade deficiency. The reason for not wanting to eat is disturbance by cold and heat Qi, damaging the clear and pure Stomach. Thus, exhaustion without relief, no irritability or thirst, indicates Stomach Yang deficiency. To awaken the stomach, one must first control the liver. Treating the stomach differs greatly from treating the spleen. Ancient texts state Stomach Qi descends smoothly. Simple Atractylodes and Licorice guarding, or Bupleurum and Cimicifuga ascending, are spleen drugs, hence rarely effective.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Fried Ophiopogon Tuber (Chao Maidong), Coix Seed (Damairen), Papaya Fruit (Mugua), Chinese Plum (Wumei).
Patient Dong: Long illness, righteous Qi is depleted. Preferring heat and fearing cold indicates deficiency. Left pulse is still wiry, disease is in the liver. But for the elderly, attacking or calming the liver is not the primary task. Propose unblocking and tonifying Stomach Yang.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Roasted Ginger (Weijiang), Xinhui Tangerina Peel (Xinhui Pi), Fried Rice Grain (Chao Jingmi), Fried Lotus Leaf Stalk (Chao Hetiedi).
Patient Lu (36 years old): Throat belongs to the stomach. If Stomach Yin does not ascend, only Yang Qi steaming causes dry throat and insomnia. Surging palpitations, trembling like fright. Jueyin internal wind takes advantage of Stomach deficiency to rebel upwards. Stomach pulse becomes increasingly deficient, limb muscle numbness. Use Shiwei Wendan Tang combined with Shumi Tang, unblocking and grasping simultaneously, so Liver and Stomach Yang harmonize, leading to recovery.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Ziziphus Seed (Zaoren), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Yellow Sorghum Grain (Huangse Sumi).
Second visit: Use draining Shaoyang and tonifying Taiyin method. Liu Jun Zi Tang removing Licorice Root, adding Moutan Cortex, Mulberry Leaf, Dendrobium Stem decoction for pills.
Patient Guo: Pulse wiry, heat in the heart, desire to vomit, no appetite, unsatisfactory stool. Jueyin Liver Yang順ly invades the stomach gate, Yangming meridians are not unblocked, body pulling pain. Harmonize both Yangs, sour and bitter to drain heat, add slight acridity.
Prescription: Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Cinnamon Twig Wood (Guizhi Mu), Raw Oyster Shell (Sheng Muli), Chinese Plum (Wumei), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi).
Patient Rui: Previous discussion on liver disease entering the stomach, upper and lower rejection. Examining Neijing, all pains are mainly due to cold invasion. But long-term pain transforms cold into heat. Thus, Six Qi transform into fire, as Liu Hejian's Nineteen Pathogenesis Mechanisms supplement also states. Initially, disease is in Qi, later enters Blood, as meridians govern Qi and collaterals govern Blood. These zang-fu, meridians, Qi, and Blood must be distinguished clearly for accurate prescription. Further inquiry reveals initial cause was fright. Fright causes Qi rebellion. Initially Liver Qi rebels, later all Qi rebels, affecting the Triple Burner, not just the stomach. Respectfully present methods for urgent and gradual medication. Jueyin Chapter says: Qi hits the heart, hunger but cannot eat, desire to vomit, mouth foams. Since Wood invades Stomach, Stomach is weakened by overcoming. Zhang Zhongjing says controlling Wood requires anchoring Earth, fearing long-term difficulty in recovery. Propose anchoring the stomach method.
Prescription: Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi), Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao), Chinese Plum (Wumei), Light Ginger Residue (Dan Jiangzha), Angelica Sinensis Root Tip (Guixu), Tangerina Peel (Juhong).
Neijing calls conquering disease "Sheng Fang" (Victory Formula), tonifying deficiency "Sheng Fang" (Life Formula) requiring compatible flavors. Now Stomach is invaded by Liver, law dictates tonifying Stomach. But Stomach is Yang Fu, all Six Fuses benefit from unblocking. Coptis is bitter and descending. Dai Yuanli says all cold herbs are cloying, except Coptis which is not. With acrid aromas of Ginger, Pepper, Angelica, combined with bitter Coptis and Toosendan, imitating Neijing: bitter and acrid combine to descend and unblock. White Peony is sour and cold, draining Wood overacting on Earth, harmonizing Yin and stopping pain. Angelica is Qi-blood herb, acrid-warm ascending, using tips is mild, Qi does not rise too much. Plum blooms early, gaining Shaoyang vital Qi, not merely astringent. Combined with bitter-cold Coptis and Toosendan, Neijing says sour and bitter drain heat. Since Qi and Heat are formless, their unblocking methods differ, hence辨析.
Second visit: Seven days before Spring Equinox, right pulse deficient, wiry, and choppy; left pulse small, wiry, strong, and rapid. Stomach pain eased, but often chills and shivering, followed by sudden fever and resolution. This is Liver disease: Jue then Heat. This year Jueyin rules Heaven, Spring Wind-Wood rules Qi. Long-term Liver disease makes Spleen-Stomach deficient. Wind-Wood stagnates in Earth palace, Ying and Wei Qi cannot flow smoothly in meridians for nourishment and protection, hence bias towards heat and cold. Wood stagnating in Earth position, ancients controlled Liver and tonified Spleen, raised Yang and scattered stagnation, balancing deviation and harmony, not merely attacking/tonifying or hot/cold. As spring warms, propose harmonizing Qi and Blood, assisting Shaoyang and Taiyin unblocking. By Minor Fullness, warm Qi vents, must heavily tonify Spleen-Stomach post-heaven foundation to match yearly Qi and constitution. Set two spring formulas.
Pill: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Broadleaf Tangerina Peel (Guangpi), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Cao), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), White Peony Root (Baishao), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), pill with Ginger-Jujube decoction.
(Intermittent Decoction): Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Broadleaf Tangerina Peel (Guangpi), Rice Sprout (Guya), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Cao), White Peony Root (Baishao), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu).
Patient Bu: Elderly, winter storage not solid, spring Wood stirs, internally corresponding to Liver. Water weak, Wood lacks nourishment, Yang Qi transforms into internal wind, invading Stomach causing vomiting, attacking hypochondrium causing pain. Zhang Zhongjing attributes thirst and heart heat to Jueyin. Neijing attributes foaming to Liver disease. Liver resides left but disease flares right, sign of Wood invading Earth position. Classics say Liver is rigid organ, needs softness to harmonize. Reviewing medicines: Cassia Bark, Evodia, Coptis mixed with Qi-breaking drugs, all spicy-dry and bitter-hot, having the flaw of using rigidity to treat rigidity. What if sudden Jue convulsions occur? Propose settling Yang and extinguishing wind method.
Prescription: Raw Oyster Shell (Sheng Muli), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Fine Rehmannia Root (Xi Shengdi), Salvia Root (Danshen), Common Wheat (Huaimaixiao), Jujube (Nanzao).
Second visit: Internal wind and Yang Qi stirring and changing are tangible but formless, overusing them. Previous proposal of salty-bitter entering Yin to harmonize Yang, assisted by Wheat and Jujube to harmonize Stomach and control Liver, achieved effect. Since Liver Wood spreads wildly, Stomach Earth is damaged. Improper treatment dries fluids and blood. Red lips, crimson tongue, dry throat, food tastes sour and greasy, clearly Stomach juice is stolen, Stomach Yin not restored. Stomach is Yangming Earth, requires yin-softness to harmonize, different from Spleen Earth.
Prescription: Raw Oyster Shell (Sheng Muli), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Fine Rehmannia Root (Xi Shengdi), Common Wheat (Xiaomai), Fried Hemp Seed (Chao Mahren), Fried Ophiopogon Tuber (Chao Maidong), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Cao).
Patient Zhang (57 years old): Pulse small and wiry, food sticking in epigastrium. Self-reports depression and forced drinking, knowing Wood-Fire invades Earth, Stomach Qi cannot descend. Propose bitter-acid draining and descending method.
Prescription: Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Curcuma Rhizome (Yujin), Fragrant Fermented Soybean (Xiang Dan Chi), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhi), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang).
Second visit: Former formula drained Jueyin, unblocked Yangming, for surging Qi, foaming, epigastric fullness, inability to eat. Also difficult stool, chest distension, upper-lower blockage. Elderly fear Guan Ge (obstruction). Give Jintui Huanglian Tang.
Patient Jiang: Morning abdominal pain, slight fullness after eating, obstruction of clear and turbid. Right pulse deficient, left wiry, no appetite, Spleen-Stomach exhausted, all deficiency signs. Ancients tonified Earth by first controlling Wood, imitate this method.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Light Evodia Fruit (Dan Wuzhuyu), Light Dried Ginger (Dan Ganjiang), Fried White Peony Root (Chao Baishao), Poria (Fuling).
Patient Zhou (59 years old): Wine heat and damp-phlegm, in old age righteous Qi is weak, clear Qi rotates little, leading to constipation, inability to hold food, poor appetite. Self-reports depression and irritability. Propose treating from Liver and Stomach.
Prescription: Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Poria (Fuling), Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi).
Patient Wang (55 years old): Hiccups recur, soup and food vomited, disease in upper epigastrium. Unknown origin, but left hypochondrium has mass, Liver Wood insults Stomach. Clearly mood worry and labor cause Qi stagnation and gathering. Long illness allows some food tolerance, not pure deficiency. Drain Jueyin to relax function, harmonize Yangming to benefit Fu. Drugs take bitter descending and acrid unblocking.
Prescription: Toosendan Fruit Peel (Chuanlianzi Pi), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi), Left Oyster Shell (Zuo Muli), Light Evodia Fruit (Dan Wuzhuyu).
Patient Tang: Epigastric fullness, hiccups, nausea, Liver Qi invading Stomach. Eating lying down causes pain and distension, restless sleep, Stomach disharmony. Crucial to calm Liver and nourish Stomach to restore. If tangible surging shapes appear, aggressive attack risks turning fullness into distension.
Prescription: Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlianzi), Hawthorn Flesh (Zharou), Curcuma Rhizome (Yujin).
Patient Yao: Chills, fever, vomiting, hypochondriac distension, epigastric obstruction, dry and difficult stool. Ancients say nine orifices disharmony belong to Stomach disease. Law: calm Liver Wood, anchor Stomach Earth. Often administer human milk and ginger juice to nourish blood, moisten dryness, and unblock. Afternoon propose Banxiexia Tang.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Poria (Fuling), Dendrobium Stem (Jinshihu), Broadleaf Tangerina Peel (Guangpi), Acorus Rhizome (Changpu).
Patient Hu (Lady): Post-menstrual chills and fever, Qi surging with desire to vomit, suddenly feeling hungry but unable to eat. Nose tip bright, coughing sweat, shortness of breath, many medicines injured Stomach, Liver Wood rises rebelliously, not Upper Jiao exterior disease.
Prescription: Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao), Small Rehmannia Root (Xiao Shengdi), Sesame Seed (Zhima Ren), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), White Peony Root (Baishao), Oyster Shell (Muli).
Second visit: From former formula remove Oyster Shell, add Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen).
Second visit: Chongyang Qi surges upward, causing restlessness, still Yin weakness. Stomach is Yang Earth, uses Yin. Uncontrolled Wood-Fire stems from dried Stomach juice, hence intestinal waste does not move. Knowing Yin deficiency, do not forcibly move bowels.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Fresh Rehmannia Root (Xian Shengdi), Hemp Seed (Huomaren), Asparagus Tuber (Tiantong), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Cao).
Patient Xu (Lady): Menstruation just arrived, limbs feel collapsed, perioral muscle twitching, ankles arms elbows often cold. Chong Mai blood descends, Qiao and Wei meridians weak and unused. Chong belongs to Yangming, opposes Jueyin. Due to fright injuring Liver, Wood invades Earth, causing Stomach decline. Initially Qi rises to throat, later lazy eating and epigastric fullness. Ancients said if treating Liver fails, take Yangming. If Yangming does not close, hollow like valley, Jue Qi adds on, inevitably vomiting, distension, acid regurgitation. However, Yangming Stomach Fu benefits from unblocking and tonifying. Rigid drugs fear stealing Yin, assist with soft drugs, thus the method.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 2 qian), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia, ginger-fried 3 qian), Poria (Fuling, 3 qian), Light Aconite Root (Dan Fuzi, 7 fen), White Rice Grain (Bai Jingmi, 5 qian), Papaya Fruit (Mugua, 2 qian).
Stomach deficiency needs Qi tonification using Ginseng. Without Pinellia acridity and Poria blandness, it is not an unblocking agent. Use small amount of Aconite to manage Stomach Yang, Rice Grain to manage Stomach Yin, obtaining meaning of unblocking-tonifying and harmonizing Yin-Yang. Papaya sourness saves Stomach juice to control Liver, harmonizing Pinellia and Aconite rigidity. This combines Banxiexia Tang and Fuzi Jingmi Tang.
Patient Zhang (Lady): Liver disease invading Stomach, heart pain, dry heaving unable to eat, cold limbs, diarrhea, Fu meridian Yang lost flow, not deficiency-cold. Jinlingzi San plus Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Chinese Plum (Wumei), Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang).
Patient Xu (Lady): Repeated abortions, lower Yuan Qi weak, chronic chills-fever cough, Qi blocking chest, surging foaming. Depressed anger causes Minister Fire and Wind-Wood residing in Liver-Gallbladder to shake internally, invading Stomach causing vomiting, acid regurgitation, attacking chest and throat causing distension, sore throat, gradually coma and fainting, prolonged as depression-labor syndrome. Treating cough clearing Lung, heavy sedation eliminating phlegm, the more you treat, the worse it gets. Examining Neijing three main Liver treatments, all treat function and substance. Also says if treating Liver fails, take Yangming. Yangming Stomach Earth alone bears Wood-Fire insult, thus controlling surging power. General principle of pathogen and treatment: Anwei Wan sent with Jiaomei Tang.
Patient Bao (Old Woman): Wind diarrhea stopped, Stomach rebels unable to accept food.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Chinese Plum (Wumei), Papaya Fruit (Mugua), Chuan Dendrobium Stem (Chuan Shihu), Tangerina Peel (Juhong).
Patient Zhu (Lady): Anger moves Liver, Qi rebels with nausea, chest-hypochondrium flashing movement, Qi sinks wanting to defecate, Middle-Lower Jiao damage not restored, constraint official loses duty. Propose tonifying Earth draining Wood method, also temporary measure.
Prescription: Chinese Plum (Wumei), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Sichuan Pepper (Chuanjiao), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Toosendan Fruit (Chuanlian), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao).
Patient Wang (Lady): Widow, mostly depressed, chronic disease in Liver. Recently summer pathogen deeply entered, Liver disease must invade Stomach. Vomiting roundworms and diarrhea stopped, no appetite, heart pain and heat, still Liver-Stomach original symptom. Moreover summer-damp often injures Qi level. Ginseng assists Stomach opening fullness, benefiting Stomach, fortunately no sudden fatigue.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Coptis Rhizome (Chuanlian), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Ginger Juice (Jiangzhi), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Oyster Shell (Muli).
Second visit: Stomach opens desiring food, still control Liver and harmonize Stomach.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Dendrobium Stem (Jinshihu), Pinellia Rhizoma (Banxia), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Poria (Fuling), Tangerina Peel (Juhong).
Patient Lv (Lady): Beside lateral costal margin is Xuliri acupoint. Now jumping like shuttle, Yangming collaterals empty. Moreover Chong Mai is Sea of Blood, also managed by Yangming. After menstruation disease suddenly changes, previous case explained, no longer repeat. Generally collateral deficiency best treated by unblocking-tonifying. Front body surging Qi wants to distend, Chong Mai governing disease. Neijing says men internal seven hernias, women leukorrhea and masses. Now pain has no image, likely no mass. Only cold sweat, dorsal cold, eating nausea, nose tip bright, perioral color green. Liver-Stomach relative, one wins one loses. Today propose regulating Yangming Yang, assisting unblocking extraordinary vessels. Zhang Zhongjing in Dongqi chapter starts from Yang deficiency, imitate this method.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), Light Cooked Aconite Root (Dan Shu Fuzi), Raw Qiai Herb (Sheng Qiai), Cinnamon Twig Wood (Guizhi Mu), Stir-fried Black Fennel (Chaohei Da Hui), Purple Quartz (Zishi), Raw Eucommia Bark (Sheng Duzhong).
Patient Zhu (Lady): Last winter used warming unblocking extraordinary vessels, leukorrhea stopped, menstruation returned. Two months, eating well, spirit peaceful. Now Feb 2nd, accidental anger, immediately numbness, dry heaving, deafness,随即 coma like fainting. Pulse inch strong, foot weak, eating less, taste bland, slight sweat. This Jueyin Yang transforms wind, invading Yangming upwards, obscuring clear void. Method harmonize Yang and benefit Stomach.
Prescription: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 1 qian), Poria (Fuling, 3 qian), Fried Pinellia Rhizoma (Chao Banxia, 1.5 qian), Raw White Peony Root (Sheng Baishao, 1 qian), Chinese Plum (Wumei, 7 fen meat), Small Coptis Rhizome (Xiao Chuanlian, 2 fen), Light Fresh Ginger (Dan Shengjiang, 2 fen), Broadleaf Tangerina Peel White (Guangpi Bai, 1 qian).
This is Jueyin-Yangming medicine. Stomach Fu benefits from unblocking as tonification, hence main Banxiexia Tang. Heat擁 at top, add slight Ginger-Coptis to drain Heart. Liver is rigid organ, add White Peony and Chinese Plum to soften it.
Second visit: March 5th, menstruation absent, slight abdominal pain, right hypochondrium twitching, all Yangming collaterals empty, Chong-Ren no storage. Should give unblocking-tonifying entering collaterals.
