Suitable for both men and women. Li Dongyuan treated women suffering from infertility due to insufficiency of yin blood; taking this formula enables conception, with good effect. It treats emaciation and weakness, often caused by long-term deficiency of kidney qi, chronic exhaustion, night sweats with fever, simultaneous damage to the five zang organs, spermatorrhea, hematochezia, Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome) and Lin Zhuo (turbid strangury), etc.
Dried Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shan Yao), Corni Fructus (Shan Zhu Yu Rou) (each 4 liang), Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie) (remove hairs), Moutan Cortex (Mu Dan Pi) (remove heart), Poria (Bai Fu Ling) (remove skin, each 3 liang), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang).
Grind the above into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Wu Zi). Take 50-60 pills on an empty stomach with plain boiled water; in cold months, take with warm wine. If kidney deficiency involves fluid retention forming phlegm-saliva...
Another prescription: Treats tinnitus caused by hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency. Add Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu), Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Chang Pu), Polygalae Radix (Yuan Zhi) (each processed).
Treats deficiency and exhaustion of kidney qi, coldness and fatigue of the lower origin, pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, frequent and weak urination at night, weakness and flaccidity of legs and knees, physical fatigue, sallow complexion, or dark/blackish complexion. Also treats insufficiency due to chronic wasting, thirst with desire to drink, heavy and painful waist, urgent pain in the lower abdomen, and difficult urination.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di) (select large and plump ones, washed in wine, 8 liang), Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie) (remove hairs), Moutan Cortex (Mu Dan Pi) (remove heart), Poria (Bai Fu Ling) (remove skin, each 3 liang), Corni Fructus (Shan Zhu Yu).
Grind the above into powder, refine honey to make pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Wu Zi). Take 50 pills with warm wine, or on an empty stomach with light salted water; for women, take with light vinegar water.
Note: Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) is a formula specifically for tonifying the kidney water of the left chi pulse position. Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) tonifies both the kidney water of the left chi pulse position and the ministerial fire of the right chi pulse position. In youth, when water is deficient and fire is hyperactive, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is suitable. In old age, when both water and fire are deficient, Ba Wei Wan is suitable. Moreover, since the true water of the kidney in the elderly is already deficient, pathogenic water invades to become damp-heat, causing symptoms such as lumbar pain, leg flaccidity, phlegm-saliva, Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome), urinary incontinence, and Lin Bi (strangury with obstruction). Can these be cured without the warming and dispersing actions of Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi) and Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fu Zi)?
