Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, dosage halved)
The above two herbs are ground together into a fine powder. Boil red dates in water to make a decoction. Mix the powder with the date flesh, form into strips, and dry them in the sun. It is advisable to prepare these in advance for distribution. For those whose houses are spacious and deep, it is naturally appropriate to listen to their wishes to stay at home and exercise caution in nursing care. If the living quarters are narrow or insufficient to shelter from wind and rain, if one can arrange temporary housing, that would be even better. Furthermore, borrow tents and quilts as needed according to circumstances.
—For each child, it is suitable to provide a headband made of Hongxing cloth and a small jacket made of thin red cloth, taking advantage of their freshness, cleanliness, softness, and mildness. For extremely poor children during the severe cold of winter, cotton-padded jackets should be provided instead. This should be adjusted according to the situation.
These items should be given when the child has a fever to prevent misuse. Once the smallpox spots appear, provide three hundred and sixty wen for lamp oil and fish cakes. If taboos are not observed and nursing is improper, leading to other symptoms, and if an unexpected incident occurs, a small fee should also be given proportionally. Although this is a case of one in ten thousand, preparation must be made in advance.
—For children under one year old, whether inoculation is suitable in all four seasons depends on flexible adaptation; it cannot be compared to planting by wealthy families. However, during May, June, and July, use deep and cool rooms to plant a small amount as a plan for seedling connection. In other months, planting can be done upon arrival, more is better. The date for planting should avoid days of Po (Break) and Bi (Close), as well as the day before Li Chun (Start of Spring), Li Xia (Start of Summer), Li Qiu (Start of Autumn), Li Dong (Start of Winter), Chun Fen (Spring Equinox), Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox), Xia Zhi (Summer Solstice), and Dong Zhi (Winter Solstice). It should also avoid days of punishment, clash, destruction, and harm related to the year's destiny, as well as days of Sui Sha (Yearly Evil), Zai Sha (Disaster Evil), Jie Sha (Robbery Evil), Tian Ke Di Chong (Heavenly Clash Earthly Conflict), and Bi Chong (Parallel Clash).
—When examining children, focus primarily on the vein patterns behind the ears. Red color with few patterns is superior; many patterns with non-purple-red color is secondary. If there are many patterns with cyan-purple color, although inoculation is not suitable, allowing natural infection will be much harder to manage. It is suitable to gift Xidou medicine (medicine to thin out smallpox); after several doses, have the child re-examined by the doctor. If the color turns red, then urgent inoculation is recommended. Additionally, if the child is post-illness, currently ill, or under one year old, inoculation should be delayed. Wait until Qi and Blood are harmonious before proceeding. Apart from these, there are no children who cannot be inoculated. The Xidou medicine prescription is attached below.

Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix body), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 3 fen), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) (0.5 fen)
Grind all ingredients into a coarse powder. For a one-year-old child, use 3 qian per dose; for two-to-three-year-olds, use 5 qian. On the day before Li Chun, decoct with East-flowing water, mix with Zhusha (Cinnabar), and take warm.
Method for Preparing Zhusha (Cinnabar)
Use Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 6 liang).
Decoct in six large bowls of East-flowing water using a new clay pot over gentle fire from mulberry wood until reduced by half. Pour out, filter to remove dregs. Take 4 liang of high-quality Zhusha (Cinnabar), wrap in silk cloth, tie with thread, and suspend it about one cun above the bottom of the sand pot. Gradually add the filtered decoction into the pot. Simmer slowly over mulberry wood fire. When the liquid is nearly dry, remove, grind into an extremely fine powder. Dosage for one-year-old: 1 fen.
After planting the seedling, seven days is the standard; fever should occur only after the five zang organs have transmitted the qi. However, some may febrile on the sixth day, or start on the ninth or eleventh day. This is normal. If fever occurs before the fifth day, the seedling qi has not yet fully transmitted; where would the heat come from? It must be due to careless nursing causing external contraction or internal injury, or contracting epidemic qi intending to develop natural smallpox. This is unrelated to inoculation. The inoculator should clarify this beforehand. If fever does not occur after eleven days, supplementary inoculation is appropriate.

Grind into coarse powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, decoct with ginger water, remove dregs, and take. Mr. Xue Lizhai said: The previous formulas treat smallpox between eruption and healing. If lesions lack luster, do not rise, are not red/lively, and within 5-7 days present with diarrhea/thirst, abdominal distension, rapid breathing/wheezing, body heat with abdominal distension and cold toes, palpitations, sweating, chills/grinding teeth, desire for scabbing but failure, failure to form crusts, or post-scabbing abdominal distension/diarrhea/thirst, these are all Spleen/Stomach deficiency-cold with depleted fluids. Use this medicine urgently. If mistakenly treated as excess heat with cold-cooling agents, honey water, or raw fruits/vegetables, it will be incurable. Mr. Zhang Jingyue said: The above two formulas have sufficient warming nature but insufficient tonifying power; they are suitable for cold syndromes but inadequate for deficiency syndromes.
