Chunyanzi was a physician from Shexian who traveled to the Guangdong region. Nanxizi sent him a letter praising Chunyanzi's talent. At that time, Chunyanzi was traveling widely and had experienced some disruption due to climatic differences (referring to acclimatization issues or changes in condition). After my inquiry, I finally met Chunyanzi. Our conversation was extremely pleasant, so much so that I stayed with him for several days and nights without wanting to leave. At that time, I was suffering from a prolonged illness in bed, and treatments by many physicians had been ineffective. Chunyanzi examined me once, diagnosed it as Heat Malaria (Re Nuè), and after two doses of medicine, I recovered. Chunyanzi, whose name was Yiyi, gained fame because of this. However, his heart was generous; from then on, whenever people in the East fell ill, they would summon Chunyanzi. If he did not come immediately, they would go fetch him, accepting his medical advice with joy or sorrow alike. He did not disdain those of low status wherever he went. Thus, the people of the East could not do without Chunyanzi for a day. As guests moved four times and calculated their return, the people of the East became anxious and requested that he write a book. Chunyanzi wrote two volumes titled *Yangsheng Leyao* (Essentials of Health Preservation). I read it with delight but also with sighs of emotion: Alas! Since Yu Fu died, physicians have lacked practice; since Yi Tuo's books were destroyed, learning has been lost. It is said that what patients fear is the multitude of diseases, while what physicians fear is the scarcity of the Dao of Medicine. I suspect that the scarcity of the Dao is not merely due to the "Six Incurables," but perhaps because medical texts rarely summarize and consolidate knowledge, leaving no guide. Therefore, at the request of the people of the East, I casually collected and recorded these methods. How can this be considered writing a book for Chunyanzi? Some say that medical cases are gathered and Chunyanzi has restored them. I say: No. Just as mixed flavors make food abundant but hard to manage, and mixed methods make physicians numerous but hard to utilize, detailed preservation and slight attention to pulse diagnosis, deep attack therapies ignoring timing, often lead to such results. Using too many methods leads to constraint. Chunyanzi first emphasizes Daoyin (Guiding and Pulling exercises), diet, and breathing; secondly, seasonal adjustments and emotional stability, to prevent disease before it arises and treat it after it appears. He collects exclusive prescriptions, gathers techniques from various schools, lists them comprehensively, and ensures sufficiency upon demand. This is not to claim superiority over ancients, but to supplement what is unknown. The Grand Historian said: "The sage understands subtle signs, enabling good physicians to act early; thus diseases can be cured and lives saved." Chunyanzi approaches this ideal. Chunyanzi's name was Zhenglun, sharing the surname Wu with Nanxizi. Nanxizi was erudite and benevolent. Chunyanzi held to simplicity and would surely expand his attainment. Narrating *Yu Cui* is not difficult.
In the year of Jiajing (Yanpeng Kundun), on a auspicious day of the first month.
Water Tide Eliminates Future Misfortunes
Upon waking at dawn, rise immediately, sit upright, concentrate your spirit, calm your thoughts, press your tongue against the upper palate, close your mouth, and regulate your breathing. Saliva will naturally generate, gradually filling the mouth. Divide it into three parts and swallow each with intention. Practicing this for a long time prevents the flare-up of pathogenic fire in the five Zang organs, promotes the circulation of Qi and Blood in the four limbs, and prevents various diseases. Eliminating future misfortunes through water (saliva) ensures aging without decline.
Fire Rising Brings Long-term Peace
During the Zi and Wu hours (11 PM-1 AM and 11 AM-1 PM), visualize true Fire rising from the Yongquan point (KI1, Bubbling Spring). First, let it travel up the left foot, pass through the Yuzhen point, cross the Niwan palace, and descend into the Dantian three times. Then repeat three times from the right foot. Finally, start from the Weilu point and perform three more cycles. With prolonged practice, all meridians will circulate freely, the five Zang organs will remain unobstructed, the four limbs will become strong, and the body will be harmonized.
Sealing the Golden Chest Prevents Loss in Dreams
When sexual desire arises, Fire flares up; when Fire flares, Spirit becomes exhausted; when Spirit is exhausted, Essence slips, leading to loss in dreams. During sleep and wakefulness, regulate breathing and contemplate the Spirit. Use the left hand to rub the navel area fourteen times (2x7); repeat with the right hand. Then rub the flanks and abdomen with both hands seven times, swallow Qi into the Dantian, hold the fists tightly for a long time, and then stop. Sleep on your side with legs bent to permanently prevent leakage.
Guarding the Jade Pass Preserves Form Amidst Decline
Worries affect the interior, and labor exhausts the form, causing decline. Returning to youth requires Golden Elixir, but how easily can one obtain it? Those skilled in health preservation maintain undivided attention during walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. They firmly guard the Dantian, silently move Shen and Qi, penetrating the Three Passes. Naturally, Essence and Qi are generated, strengthening the form and extending life.
Drumming Harmony Dissolves Accumulations
Accumulations may result from food or Qi. Over time, the Spleen and Stomach are damaged, making treatment difficult. Is it not better to regulate diet, avoid anger, and prevent accumulation? Patients should raise their bodies, hold their breath, and drum/move the chest and abdomen until full of Qi, then slowly exhale with a "Ha" sound. Repeat five to seven times until feeling relieved, then stop.
Bowing Ritual Treats Cold Damage
When Yuan Qi is weak and pores are loose, Wind-Cold invades. Patients sit cross-legged, tightly grasp the external kidneys with both hands, close the mouth and breathe quietly, visualizing True Qi rising from the Weilu point, passing through the Jiaji points, piercing the Niwan palace to expel pathogenic factors. Bow the head and bend the body as if worshipping, without limiting the number of repetitions, stopping when sweating occurs. The illness will heal.
Clacking Teeth Ensures Dental Health
Dental diseases are caused by the steaming of Spleen-Stomach Fire. Upon waking in the morning, clack the teeth thirty-six times. Stir the tongue along the gum roots until saliva fills the mouth, then swallow. Do this in sets of three. When urinating, keep the mouth closed and clack teeth tightly, opening only after finishing, ensuring lifelong dental health.
Ascending Vision Prevents Gray Hair
Excessive thinking depletes Spirit and causes Qi-Blood deficiency, leading to gray hair. During Zi and Wu hours, hold fists, sit upright, concentrate spirit, eliminate thoughts, keep eyes open with light focused upward toward the Niwan palace. Visualize capturing Yin and Yang energies, rising from the Weilu point, descending, and returning to the Yuan Sea. Perform nine cycles per session. Over time, Spirit becomes whole, Qi-Blood sufficient, and hair may turn black again.
Rotating Eyes Removes Cataracts
Heat and Qi damage, Liver and Kidney deficiency cause blurry vision and cataracts. Untreated for long, blindness is inevitable. Upon waking daily, sit cross-legged, focus breath, lower eyelids, rotate eyes fourteen times, close tightly for a moment, then suddenly open wide. Consistent practice disperses internal and external opacities. Strictly avoid sexual indulgence and reading fine print.
Covering Ears Eliminates Dizziness
Evil Wind entering the brain and Deficient Fire attacking upward cause dizziness and headaches. Prolonged cases may lead to stroke, muteness, or hemiplegia. Treatment requires quiet sitting, raising the body, holding breath, covering ears with hands, and tilting the head five to seven times. Visualize Primordial Spirit ascending to the Niwan palace to expel pathogens, naturally dispersing Wind-Evil.
Lifting and Stepping Lightens Bones
Limbs need slight exertion, like a door hinge never rusting. Bear-hanging and bird-stretching, breathing exercises, and Daoyin are all uses for health preservation. Normally, lift both hands overhead as if lifting a heavy stone, step forward with feet as if walking on flat ground. Visualize Shen and Qi following the Four Seasons' exhalations (Hu and Ha) fourteen times. This makes the body healthy and light, resistant to cold and heat.
Rubbing and Smearing Enhances Beauty
Haggard complexion results from excessive mental effort and careless busyness. Every morning, sit quietly, close eyes, concentrate spirit, nourish Shen and Qi, allowing tranquility to reach outward. Rub hands until hot, wipe face seven times, then apply saliva to the face and rub several times. Practice for half a month for smooth skin and radiant complexion, surpassing the ordinary.
Closing and Massaging Unblocks Stagnant Qi
Stagnant Qi causes pain; stagnant Blood causes swelling. Stagnation must be handled carefully. Treatment requires clearing the mind and holding breath. Massage the stagnated area seventy-seven times with the left hand, then the right. Apply saliva afterward. Practice diligently for seven days to ensure free-flowing Qi and Blood, preventing fluid stagnation. This is the meaning of "dry bathing" in cultivation circles.
Embracing and Consolidating Secures the Dantian
Once Primordial Spirit leaves, retrieve it immediately; when Spirit returns to the body, Qi naturally follows. Doing this morning and night naturally produces the True Fetus of the infant, which is the merit of embracing and consolidating. Usually, sit quietly, visualize Primordial Spirit entering the Dantian, breathe naturally. After ten days, the Dantian becomes solid; after a hundred days, spiritual clarity gradually connects. Do not practice intermittently.
Light Diet Provides Abundant Nourishment
Each of the Five Flavors suits the Five Zang organs. Irregular eating causes depletion. A light and regulated diet is superior. However, "light" does not mean abandoning the Five Flavors, but keeping them mild. An immortal said: "Abandoning salt is not the Dao; food without flavor is tasteless." This shows that the Five Flavors should not be completely abandoned.
Mindlessness Achieves Great Return
The Dao of Great Return is the Sage's Dao. Mindlessness means constant purity and stillness. If humans maintain constant purity and stillness, Heaven and Earth will all return. The Dao cannot be transmitted, nor can Great Return be obtained? The *Qingjing Jing* (Scripture of Purity and Stillness) has explained this fully. Cultivators who embody and practice this can reach the realm of pure truth and spiritual wonder as easily as turning a palm.
