Qiqi Tang (Seven-Emotions Decoction): Treats excess distension caused by the qi of the seven emotions.
The formula is seen in the "Heart and Abdominal Pain" chapter.
Weiling San (Stomach-Ling Powder): Eliminates distension and promotes water metabolism.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1.5 qian, stir-fried), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, each 1.5 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 1 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Zhuling (Polyporus, each 1.5 qian), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, 0.7 qian), Fuling (Poria, 4 qian).
Add five slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), three cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain, and take orally. Remove Guizhi and Zhigancao; mash half-cooked suan tou (Allii Sativi Bulbus) roasted in hot ashes into pills. Take three to four qian with Chenmi Tang (Chenpi Rice Decoction); taking it twice a day is even better.
Houpo Sanwu Tang (Magnolia Three-Ingredient Decoction)
Houpo Qiwu Tang (Magnolia Seven-Ingredient Decoction)
Both formulas are seen in the "Abdominal Pain" chapter.
Guigan Jiangzao Maxinfuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Ginger, Jujube, Ephedra, Asarum, and Aconite Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats Qi Fen disease (diseases of the Qi level), characterized by hardness and enlargement below the heart like a plate, with edges like an inverted cup.
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (each 3 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, 1 qian), Dazao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus, three pieces).
Use three cups of water; first boil Mahuang until two cups remain, skim off the foam, add the other herbs, decoct until eight-tenths remain, take warm, divided into three doses throughout day and night. Sweating should occur, feeling as if insects are crawling on the skin, at which point the disease will be cured.
This condition is a disease of Heart-Kidney Non-Interaction (Xin Shen Bu Jiao). The upper cannot descend, and the lower cannot ascend. Accumulating day after day, it becomes hard to break like iron or stone. In the formula, Guizhi, Gancao, Shengjiang, and Dazao harmonize the upper, while Mahuang, Xixin, and Fuzi are used as specific agents for Shaoyin disease to treat the lower. Thus, upper and lower communicate, and the disease is cured. This is what is meant by "When the Great Qi turns, the pathogenic Qi disperses."
Zhizhu Tang (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treats hardness and enlargement below the heart like a plate. (If it resembles a plate but not an inverted cup, the pathogen is still scattered and unconsolidated; although hard and large, it is not painful or full). It is caused by Water-Drink retention (distinct from Qi Fen disease; Qi is formless and dispersed with pungent-sweet herbs, whereas Water has form and is drained with bitter-draining herbs).
Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 2 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 4 qian).
Use two cups of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain, and take orally, divided into three doses throughout day and night. Stop medication when the abdomen becomes soft.
Yuyuliang Wan (Yuyu Grain Pill) (from *San Yin Ji Yi Bing Zheng Fang Lun*): Treats ten types of edema and Water-Qi, swelling of feet and knees, shortness of breath and rapid breathing due to upward rebellion, and difficult urination. It governs all conditions caused by Water-Qi (Xu Xueshi and Zhu Danxi both stated this formula is a key medicine for treating Drum Distension/Guzhang).
Shetanhshi (Ophiopsidi Lithospermum, large pieces, 3 liang; place in a new iron pot, heat in charcoal fire until the stone is as red as the pot, remove with tongs, pour into vinegar, wait for cooling, remove, and grind extremely fine), Yuyuliangshi (Haematitum, 3 liang), Zhenzhensha (Magnetitum, 5 liang; first wash clean with water, stir-fry dry, combine with Yuyuliang, use two sheng of rice vinegar, boil in the pot until vinegar is dry, then use the pot. Combine medicine and put in charcoal, heat until red, remove with tongs, pour onto clean brick ground, wait for cooling, and grind fine).
These three substances are the main ingredients. Secondly, according to the patient's deficiency or excess, add the following:
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Pengzhu (Curcumae Phaeocaulis Rhizoma), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Baidoukou (Cardamomi Rotundus Fructus, prepared), Dahuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried), Jingsanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma, prepared), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, soaked in wine overnight, each half liang).
Grind the above into powder, mix evenly with the previous medicines. Soak steamed cake dough in water, wring out the water, mix with the medicine, pound thoroughly until uniform, and make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take thirty to fifty pills before meals with warm wine or plain water. Salt is strictly forbidden; even a trace must not enter the mouth, otherwise the disease will flare up more severely. Upon taking the medicine, it will immediately pass through urine without affecting the Zang-Fu organs. On the day the disease is cured, take three times a day, assisted by mild Qi and Blood tonifying medicines. Truly a miraculous formula.
Ancestors used this formula with frequent success because it greatly warms the Water Zang (Kidney). Taking this pill assisted by Qi and Blood tonifying medicines is not overly harsh.
