②胁:xie2(音协)。

Danxi stated: Whenever people enjoy eating hot food, it causes damage to the stomach's receiving capacity. Clear blood flows out and stagnates, forming Blood Stasis (Xue Yu) that accumulates in the stomach, often causing Heart Pain (Xin Tong). The symptom is that drinking hot beverages exacerbates the condition, and the pulse is Deep (Chen) and Choppy (Se). For severe cases, use Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction for Lowering) to purge; for mild cases, use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Tao Ren (Peach Kernel), Hong Hua (Safflower), Ru Xiang (Olibanum), Mo Yao (Myrrh), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus Dung), and Yuan Hu (Corydalis Rhizome).

Seven Types of Hernias Located in the Jueyin Meridian
The seven hernias are Han Hernia (Cold Hernia), Shui Hernia (Water Hernia), Xue Hernia (Blood Hernia), Qi Hernia (Qi Hernia), Jin Hernia (Sinew Hernia), Hu Hernia (Fox Hernia), and Dian Hernia (Epileptic Hernia). Zhang Zihe discussed this in detail. Danxi stated, "Hernias are specifically related to the Liver Meridian and have absolutely nothing to do with the Kidney Meridian." They are mostly caused by Damp-Heat (Shi Re) from the Liver Meridian sinking downward and failing to disperse, leading to unilateral swelling or hernia pain. I once formulated a prescription to treat them, which showed miraculous effects after just three or four doses, with hundred percent efficacy and no failures. It is named San Jie Tang (Three Swift Decoction).
San Jie Tang (Three Swift Decoction)
Qing Pi (1 qian), Guan Gui (0.5 qian), Gui Wei (1 qian), Bing Lang (2 qian), Da Hui Xiang (0.7 qian, lightly stir-fried), Huang Bai (0.3 qian), Ju He (2 qian), Mu Tong (2 qian), Zi Su (0.7 qian), Xiang Fu (1 qian), Chi Fu Ling (2 qian), Chai Hu (1 qian), Li Zhi He (7 pieces, stir-fried), Jiang (1 slice). Add three zhong of water, decoct to one zhong, take warm on an empty stomach.
Note: *Yi Zong Jin Jian* states under "Differentiation of Same-Named Hernia Syndromes": "Xue Hernia is Yuzhou Biandu (Fish Mouth Abscess); Jin Hernia is Xiagan (Chancre)." Thus, among the seven hernias, Chancre and Biandu, which are sexually transmitted diseases, are also included. Liu's San Jie Tang acts quickly, likely belonging to the category of Cold Hernia.
Difference Between Left and Right Hypochondriac Pain
Hypochondriac pain (Xie Tong) is rib pain. The two hypochondria belong to the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. If Phlegm-Fluid (Tan Yin) flows into the area, or if Blood Stasis (Yu Xue) accumulates, preventing Qi movement, pain occurs. For Phlegm, the pulse is Wiry (Xuan) and Slippery (Hua). For Blood Stasis, the pulse is Wiry and Choppy. For Phlegm, use Chen Pi, Fu Ling, Gua Lou, Gan Cao, Zhi Ke, Chai Hu, Bai Jie Zi, Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), and Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice). For Blood Stasis, use Dang Gui, Chi Shao, Tao Ren, Hong Hua, Chai Hu, Guan Gui, Xiang Fu, and Mo Yao. If caused by Liver Fire, add Huang Lian and Long Dan Cao. If caused by Food Stagnation (Shi Ji), add Mai Ya and Sha Ren.
-----------------------------------------
① Zhang Congzheng, courtesy name Zihe, was from Kaocheng, Suzhou, during the Jin Dynasty. His methods followed Liu Hejian, using mostly cold and cool medicines. He studied the Sweating, Vomiting, and Purging methods most profoundly and authored *Rumen Shiqin*.
② Xie: From the armpit to the boundary of the ribs.
Head Wind Has Left and Right Distinctions
The head is at the top of the body, exposed to Wind-Cold. Once there is a gap, Wind Evil enters due to deficiency. If Blood Deficiency allows Wind Evil to invade, the left side hurts. If Qi Deficiency allows Wind Evil to invade, the right side hurts. A Floating (Fu) and Slippery (Hua) pulse indicates easy treatment; a Short (Duan) and Choppy (Se) pulse indicates difficult treatment. The formula is primarily Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San (Ligusticum Tea-Pouring Powder). For Blood Deficiency, add Shu Di and Dang Gui; for Qi Deficiency, add Huang Qi and Ren Shen; for Phlegm, add Ban Xia and Nan Xing; for Heat, add Huang Qin and Shi Gao; for excessive Wind, add Tian Ma and Man Jing Zi. This method focuses on adding herbs, with the base formula as an assistant.
Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San
Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San consists of Jing Jie, Bo He, Bai Zhi, Fang Feng, Gan Cao, Xi Xin, and Qiang Huo—eight flavors of medicine—to calm Head Wind and swellings.
Du Liang Wan treats acute contraction of Wind-Cold, stiffness of the head and neck, inability to look back, commonly known as stiff neck pain.
Xiang Bai Zhi (2 liang) is ground into fine powder, mixed with refined honey into pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with tea water or Jing Jie decoction.
Lower Back Pain Due to Kidney Deficiency or Sprain
The lower back is the mansion of the Kidneys and the major joint of the body. Excessive sexual activity leads to Kidney Deficiency; sprains cause Qi reversal; heavy lifting injuries cause Blood coagulation; sleeping in damp places leads to Cold-Damp invasion. All these are causes of lower back pain. Analyzing the symptoms: Kidney Deficiency presents with lingering pain and a Deep, Wiry, and Large pulse. Sprain presents with difficulty bending and extending, and a Deep, Wiry, and Excess pulse. Blood Coagulation presents with stabbing pain, lighter by day and heavier by night. Damp-Heat presents with yellow urine and loose stools, and a Deep, Wiry, Fine, and Rapid pulse. Cold-Damp presents with pain triggered by cloudy weather or prolonged sitting. For Kidney Deficiency, use Dang Gui, Shu Di, Gou Qi, Niu Xi, Du Zhong, Hui Xiang, Zhi Mu, Huang Bai, Xu Duan, and Du Huo. For Sprain, use Hui Xiang, Mu Xiang, Chuan Xiong, Guan Gui, Sha Ren, and Zhi Ke. For Blood Coagulation, use Gui Wei, Tao Ren, Hong Hua, Su Mu, Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, Rou Gui, Yuan Hu, and Du Huo. For Damp-Heat, use Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Chen Pi, Fang Ji, Zhi Mu, Fang Feng, Qin Jiao, and Qiang Huo. For Cold-Damp, use Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Gui Zhi, Fu Zi, Du Zhong, Niu Xi, Bai Zhi, Cang Zhu, and Du Huo.
Abdominal Pain Due to Cold or Food Retention
Zhongwan disease belongs to Taiyin; umbilical abdominal pain belongs to Shaoyin; lower abdominal pain belongs to Jueyin. Continuous pain without fluctuation indicates Cold. Intermittent pain indicates Heat. Severe pain with urge to defecate, relieved after defecation, indicates Food Stagnation. Fixed pain without migration indicates Dead Blood (Si Xue). Pain with difficulty urinating, temporarily relieved by spicy/hot foods, indicates Phlegm. Pain with a movable mass in the abdomen that disappears upon pressing, accompanied by nausea of clear fluid, indicates Parasites. Pain caused by eating hot food then cold food indicates Cold-Heat Disharmony. True abdominal pain where blue veins above the navel extend to the heart is dangerous; black color on the philtrum is critical. A Fine and Slow pulse is auspicious; a Large and Rapid pulse is ominous. Treatment uses Ping Wei San added with Bai Shao as the main formula. For Cold, add Gan Jiang, Fu Zi, Rou Gui, and Wu Zhu Yu. For Heat, add Bai Shao and Huang Bai. For severe pain, add stir-fried Gan Jiang. For Food Stagnation, add Bing Lang, Zhi Shi, Shen Qu, Mai Ya, Shan Zha, and Lai Fu Zi to digest; for severe cases, add Da Huang and Rou Gui to purge. For Dead Blood, add Gui Wei, Tao Ren, Wu Ling Zhi, and Yuan Hu Suo to invigorate; for severe cases, add Da Huang and Rou Gui to purge. For Damp-Phlegm, add Nan Xing, Ban Xia, Xiang Fu, Fu Ling, Zhi Ke, and Mu Tong. For Parasites, add Shi Jun Zi and Ku Lian Gen Pi. For Cold-Heat Disharmony, add Shao Yao, Gui Zhi, and Da Huang.
If abdominal pain radiates to the hypochondria, with cold hands and feet and a hidden pulse, it is mostly due to dietary Phlegm-Fluid filling the Extreme Yin and suppressing Liver-Gallbladder Qi. Use Burnt Salt Soup to induce vomiting. This is the method of dispersing constrained Wood.

Wei Syndrome: Deficiency and Damp-Heat
The gist of *Neijing · Wei Lun* is: Lung Heat scorches the leaves, causing thin and weak skin and hair, leading to Wei Bi (Atrophy and Limpness). Heart Qi Heat generates Mai Wei (Vessel Atrophy), with sinews relaxing and unable to support. Liver Qi Heat generates Jin Wei (Sinew Atrophy), with Zong Jin (Major Sinews) flaccid. Spleen Qi Heat generates Rou Wei (Flesh Atrophy), with muscles insensible. Kidney Qi Heat generates Gu Wei (Bone Atrophy), with feet unable to bear weight.
Causes of Wei Syndrome: Traveling long distances after illness; rising early postpartum; excessive indulgence in sex immediately after depletion, damaging bone marrow, leading to weak legs. Treatment should tonify Essence, nourish Blood, and strengthen sinews and bones. One must abstain from sexual activity to achieve full recovery. Qi Wei Gu Zhen Wan (Start Atrophy Solidify True Pill) is primary.
If contracted in summer due to prevailing Damp-Heat, use Li Dongyuan's Qing Zao Tang (Clear Dryness Decoction).
A person addicted to alcohol suffered from Wei. I said alcohol is a Damp-Heat substance. Caused by alcohol, I gave Qing Zao Tang with good effect.

① Bi: Disease of both feet. Wei Bi refers to weak, insensible legs unable to walk.
② Zhuo Sang: Indulgence in wine and women, damaging the body.
Bi Syndrome: Cold-Damp and Wind Invasion
*Neijing* states: "Wind, Cold, and Dampness mixing together form Bi." Excessive Wind causes wandering pain; excessive Cold causes pulling pain; excessive Dampness causes heaviness. Bi means obstruction. When Wind, Cold, and Damp Qi invade the skin and flow into meridians, body fluids become turbid, transforming into Phlegm-Fluid or Blood Stasis, blocking tunnels, causing pain, wandering sensations, or numbness. Use Tong Jing Zhi Tong Tang (Unblock Meridians Stop Pain Decoction).
-----------------------------------------
① Bi: Obstruction.
A woman pregnant for two months had whole-body pain. Doctors treated it as Gout without success. After nearly a month, fasting for several days worsened numbness, causing panting almost to death. Four Types of Nocturnal Emission: Heart and Kidney Not Interacting
Nocturnal emission has four types: Overuse of mind causing Heart not controlling Kidney essence loss; excessive lust causing uncontrollable sliding emission; unfulfilled desires causing essence loss due to misplaced position; long abstinence causing full essence leakage. All are due to Heart-Kidney non-interaction and Water-Fire not balancing.
Emission during dreams of intercourse is called Dream Emission (Meng Yi), due to unclear spirit/mind. Use Er Chen Tang added with Ren Shen, Zhi Shi, Yuan Zhi, Fu Shen, Suan Zao Ren, Chen Sha, and Sha Ren. Emission during urination is called Sliding Essence (Jing Hua), due to excessive sexual activity. Use Ba Zhen Tang added with Zhi Mu, Huang Bai, Wu Wei Zi, Shan Zhu Yu, Mu Li, and Long Gu.
A young man with long abstinence had sticky, stringy semen emission even without urination. I said this is Jing Hua, caused by Lust Fire moving and essence separating. Treatment should clear Heart, nourish Kidney, strengthen Spleen, and secure collapse. Jiu Long Dan (Nine Dragon Pill) cured him.
Jiu Long Dan (Nine Dragon Pill)
Nine ingredients: Jin Ying Zi, Shan Zhu Yu, Gou Qi, Lian Xu, Qian Shi, Fu Ling, Wu Lian Zi, Dang Gui, Shu Di.
Bai Lu Wan (White Deer Pill)
Bai Lu treats nocturnal emission: Lu Jiao Shuang and Mu Li equally; half amount of Sheng Long Gu; made into pills with wine paste to swallow.

Note: Leakage due to full essence after long abstinence should not be considered a disease.
Five Types of Jaundice: Formed by Damp-Heat Steaming
Jaundice syndromes have five: Huang Dan (Yellow Jaundice), Huang Han (Yellow Sweat), Gu Dan (Grain Jaundice), Jiu Dan (Wine Jaundice), and Nu Lao Dan (Female Labor Jaundice). *Jin Gui Yao Lue* discusses this in detail. Danxi said, "Jaundice need not be divided into five; all are Damp-Heat, similar to fermenting yeast." Promote diuresis first, detoxify second. Yin Chen Qu Dan Tang (Artemisia Eliminate Jaundice Decoction) is primary. Abdominal fullness with protruding navel, yellow palms/soles, and absent Cun Kou pulse are untreatable.

① An: Covering. Similar to fermenting yeast: explains jaundice etiology as similar to long-term Damp-Heat steaming and fermentation changing color.
Vertigo: No Vertigo Without Phlegm
*Ling Shu Jing* states: "The brain is the sea of Marrow... If Sea of Marrow is sufficient, one is light, strong, and powerful beyond measure. If insufficient, one experiences dizziness, tinnitus, calf weakness, vertigo, blindness, lethargy, and desire to lie down." Danxi said, "Without Phlegm, there is no vertigo; Phlegm moves due to Fire." I examine vertigo cases, all caused by excessive sexual activity, draining Essence and emptying Marrow. Any labor causes Fire Qi to flare upward, resulting in spinning head, dim vision, and fainting. Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst): No Xiao Ke Without Fire
Xiao Ke has three types: Upper Xiao belongs to Lung, with polydipsia but normal appetite and bowel/bladder function; Middle Xiao belongs to Stomach, with polyphagia and yellow/red urine; Lower Xiao belongs to Kidney, with turbid urine like paste, thirst, black ear cartilage, and frequent urination. Those who can eat will develop carbuncles/back sores; those who cannot eat will develop abdominal distension. Generally, all three Xiao are caused by Fire-Heat scorching organs and consuming Blood. Treatment uses Si Wu Tang as main formula. Constipation: Blood Dryness and Concretion
Constipation is due to insufficient Body Fluids. Treatment should nourish Blood and moisten intestines. Use Si Wu Tang added with Ma Ren and Xing Ren. Do not recklessly use Mang Xiao, Da Huang, Ba Dou, or Qian Niu harsh purgatives, which damage True Yin and harm Stomach Qi, causing greater harm. If Stomach Qi is initially solid and pathogens accumulate in intestines, purging is necessary, and Xiao/Huang medicines must be used.
