Wei syndrome is a severe condition. All types of Wei syndrome originate from Lung heat. The Classics state: "When the five Zang organs suffer from Lung heat causing the leaves to wither, Wei syndrome develops." When Lung Qi is hot, the skin and hair first become flaccid, accompanied by Lung sounds. When Heart Qi is hot, Mai Wei (pulse Wei) occurs, characterized by relaxed calves unable to support the body weight. When Liver Qi is hot, Jin Wei (tendon Wei) occurs, presenting with bitter taste and tendon spasms. When Spleen Qi is hot, Rou Wei (muscle Wei) occurs, manifesting as numbness and insensitivity of the skin and flesh. When Kidney Qi is hot, Gu Wei (bone Wei) occurs, resulting in inability to extend the lower back and spine. Zhu Danxi's treatment method: Drain the South (Heart Fire) and tonify the North (Kidney Water). Draining the South ensures that Metal (Lung) is not subjected to fire suppression; tonifying the North causes Heart Fire to descend naturally, allowing the clear and descending function of the West to move downward. This clears the Lung Qi, gradually dissipates damp-heat among the tendons, vessels, bones, and flesh, thereby curing Wei syndrome. However, the Classics also state: "In treating Wei syndrome, one should exclusively focus on the Yangming channel." Why? Because Yangming is the sea of the Zang-fu organs, primarily nourishing the Zongjin (major tendons), which bind the bones and facilitate joint movement. If Yangming is deficient, Zongjin becomes lax, and the Dai meridian loses its tension, leading to foot Wei and inability to use the legs. Based on the previous discussion, it states that the five Zang organs have heat; based on the latter discussion, it states that Yangming is deficient. These two theories seem different but are essentially the same. Yangming Stomach belongs to Damp Earth; when Earth is deficient and affected by the transformation of cold or heat, the mother disease transmits to the child, injuring Lung Metal, thus triggering Wei syndrome. Therefore, treating Wei syndrome requires focusing exclusively on Yangming. Focusing on Yangming aims to dispel dampness; draining South and tonifying North aims to clear heat. The methods for treating Wei syndrome do not go beyond tonifying the middle, dispelling dampness, nourishing Yin, and clearing heat.
To treat Wei syndrome of the five Zang organs:
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), each 1 qian; Gancao (Licorice Root), roasted, 4 fen; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), 1.5 qian; Yiren (Coicis Semen), 3 qian; Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), 2 qian; Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), fried until brown; Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), each 5 fen.
Decoct in water and take orally. If Heart Qi is hot, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 3 fen, Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) each 1 qian. If Liver Qi is hot, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) each 1 qian. If Spleen Qi is hot, add Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 1 qian and Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 1.5 qian. If Kidney Qi is hot, add Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), and Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis) each 1.5 qian. If Lung Qi is hot, add Tiandong (Asparagi Tuber) and Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) each 2 qian. If complicated by phlegm, add Chuanbei (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) and Zhuli (Bambusa Textilis Pith Juice); if damp-phlegm, add Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermentatum); if blood stasis, add Taoren (Persicae Semen) and Honghua (Carthami Flos); if both Qi and Blood are deficient, separately use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Great Tonifying Decoction); if there is deficiency-heat of Liver and Kidney with reduced marrow and withered bones, concurrently use Huqian Wan (Tiger Crouching Pill).
Shiquan Dabu Tang (see Xu Lao / Deficiency Consumption).
