(The first herb) Pungent in flavor, neutral in qi, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. It descends rebellious qi to eliminate cough, lowers turbid yin to stop vomiting, expels and resolves fluid retention, clears and washes away phlegm-saliva, opens chest and diaphragm distension and obstruction, and消 (eliminates) throat swelling and pain. It calms dizziness of the head, drains epigastric fullness and stuffiness. It is good at regulating retrograde vomiting and marvellously settles palpitations and fright. Use after washing off alum; for pregnancy, stir-fry with ginger juice.
(The second herb) Pungent and bitter in flavor, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. It lowers turbid yin to stop dry heaving and hiccups, moves stagnant qi to drain depressive fullness, is excellent at opening the chest and diaphragm, and is best at sweeping away phlegm-saliva.
(The third herb) Pungent in flavor, slightly warm, enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. It stops vomiting and diarrhea/dysentery, calms accumulations and masses (jia), secures the fetus and protects pregnancy, reduces distension and relieves pain. If baked in flour, it solidifies the large intestine. If ground raw, it reduces swelling and treats sores.
(The fourth herb) Pungent in flavor, slightly warm, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Warms the lung and descends rebellious qi, stops wheezing and stabilizes cough.
(The fifth herb) Sweet in flavor, slightly bitter, slightly cold, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Clears the heart and moistens the lungs, washes away filth and removes vexation, opens chest and diaphragm bi-obstruction, and washes away sticky phlegm-saliva. It is best at cleansing blood stasis and turbidity, and is good at resolving deep-seated restlessness and regret (ao nao).
(The sixth herb) Sweet and bitter in flavor, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Descends rebellious qi to open bi-obstruction, drains obstructed qi to calm wheezing and cough, reduces edema of the skin and interstices, moistens the dryness of the lungs and intestines, is most beneficial for the chest and diaphragm, and also unblocks the collaterals.
(The seventh herb) Salty in flavor, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Foot-Yangming Stomach meridians. Moves stagnation and astringency to cut off bleeding, cleanses blood stasis and turbidity to descend rebellious qi.
(The eighth herb) Pungent in flavor, warm in temperature, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Breaks through congestion and resolves phlegm, stops wheezing and soothes cough.
(The ninth herb) Pungent in flavor, neutral in qi, enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. Descends qi to stop wheezing, transforms phlegm and breaks depression. Raw and crushed, it induces vomiting of old phlegm.
(The tenth herb) Bitter and pungent in flavor, slightly cold, enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian. Reaches wood stagnation to disperse wind, moves blood stasis to drain heat, expels pus and blood from carbuncles and sores, and transforms organ masses (jia).
(The eleventh herb) Pungent in flavor, slightly warm, enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian. Moves closure and astringency of the meridians, reaches the depression of wind-wood, relieves severe pain and cuts off diarrhea, disperses stagnant qi and breaks blood stasis.
(The twelfth herb) Sweet, bitter, and pungent in flavors, enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian. Unblocks meridians to move blood stasis and astringency, breaks blood to transform masses (jia). Soak to remove skin and tips.
