Those presenting with chills and fever are termed *Han Sou* (Cold Cough), treated with Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) plus Xing Ren (Apricot Seed). (Formula see Shang Han Lun.)
[Zhu Danxi] Fire Cough is suitable for treatment with Qing Jin Hua Tan Wan (Clear Metal Transform Phlegm Pill).
Qing Hua Wan is used in conjunction with Qing Jin Wan, specifically treating Heat Cough and sore throat. Bitter flavors can dry dampness, and light/clear substances treat upper jiao disorders. Take leaves of Deng Long Cao (Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii) as fine powder, mix with steamed dough to form pills. Take 30-50 pills per dose. (Deng Long Cao is also known as Ku Dan Cao; its calyx resembles a lantern, hence the name.)
Qing Jin Wan, also named Yu Dian Wan, clears Lung fire and descends hot phlegm from the diaphragm. Used with Qing Hua Wan. Only Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) is stir-fried into powder and formed into water pills.
When phlegm is stirred by fire and rebels upward causing cough, first treat the fire, then treat the phlegm. Use Zhi Mu Zhi Sou (Anemarrhena Cough-Stopping Formula) to clear Lung metal, nourish yin, and descend fire. For Fire Stagnation Cough, use He Zi (Chebula Fruit), Hai Shi (Fossil Shell), Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), and Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome) to open stagnation. For Wheezing Cough, regardless of age, duration, or upper congestion, take Huai Hua (Sophora Flower) as powder, drop water to form pills like Sophora seeds, and take with warm water or ginger decoction at any time.
[Luo Tianyi] Chai Hu Yin (Bupleurum Drink) treats consumptive emaciation, sallow complexion with weakness, reduced appetite, night sweats, and incessant cough.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) (1 liang), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (5 qian), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) (1.5 liang), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (1 liang, prepared with su), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (1 liang).
Grind all into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 2 Wumei (Mume Fructus) and 5 leaves of Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), decoct in water, strain, and drink.
[Ben Cao Yan Yi] Another prescription treats Lao Sou (Consumptive Cough) deficiency syndromes, as well as runny nose with clear mucus, tinnitus like cicadas, visual black spots, and all deficiency syndromes. Suitable for both men and women, even young people.
Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (2 liang), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (3 liang), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) (3 liang).
Grind into powder, refine honey to form pills like Sophora seeds. Take 30-50 pills before meals on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt water as desired. Women should take with vinegar water. This formula is a secret recipe from a family in Qujiang; I have found it highly effective, and the prescription rationale is excellent.
[Li Gao] Yi Jian Xing Zi Tang (Simple Apricot Decoction) treats cough regardless of external wind-cold invasion, internal injury from cold/raw food, consumptive hemoptysis, or retention of fluid-phlegm.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma - halve dose), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma - halve dose), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus - halve dose), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) (equal parts).
Cut into pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 cups of water, Xing Ren (Pruni Semen) peeled and cored (5 pieces crushed), 3 slices of ginger. Decoct to 60%, strain, and take warm. If caused by cold/flu, add Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) in equal amounts. If the spleen/stomach is naturally robust, add Su Ke (Cornus Fructus? Note: Text says Su Ke, likely Pericarpium Arecae Catechu or similar astringent, but context suggests astringent for chronic cough) removed of membrane, crushed, vinegar-stir-fried in equal amounts. Add 1 Wumei (Mume Fructus) per dose, decoct and take. Effect is more pronounced. Not for those with vomiting or nausea. For chronic cough with qi deficiency and wheezing urgency, remove Xing Ren and Ren Shen, double Ma Huang, Shao Yao, Gan Jiang, and Wu Wei Zi by half. Also called Xiao Qing Long Tang.
Jie Gu's Shui Zhu Jin Hua Wan treats cough with irritability. Tian Ma Wan (Gastrodia Pill). Luo Shi's Hua Tan Yu Hu Wan (Luo's Phlegm-Transforming Jade Pot Pill) (The above three formulas are listed under Damp-Phlegm section.)
[Zhu Danxi] Sou Feng Hua Tan Wan (Search Wind Transform Phlegm Pill)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus), Huai Jiao (Sophorae Flos), Bai Fan (Alumen), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium - white pith removed), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) (each 1 liang), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (4 liang, soaked in juice), Chen Sha (Cinnabar) (0.5 liang).
Grind into powder, grind with ginger juice using steamed dough to form pills, coat with Chen Sha. Take 40 pills with ginger tea.
[Luo Tianyi] Yan Shou Dan (Longevity Elixir) treats wind-obstruction phlegm-cough, or cold-phlegm causing throat/diaphragm obstruction.
Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) (0.5 liang), Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus) (1.5 liang), Ming Fan (Alumen) (1 liang, half raw half calcined), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (1.5 liang).
Grind into fine powder, mix with wine to form a paste, wrap in steamed dough, steam until cooked, remove dough, roll into pills like Sophora seeds. Take 30 pills with warm water after meals and before bed.
[Ju Fang] Fang Feng Wan (Saposhnikovia Pill) treats wind-phlegm attacking upward, headache, nausea, neck stiffness, vertigo, phlegm-saliva congestion leading to confusion.
Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) (soaked in wine overnight), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - roasted), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (washed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) (5 qian, for coating).
Grind into powder. Make 10 pills from each liang of powder, coat with Zhu Sha. Take 1 pill per dose, dissolve in Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) tea or tea, at any time.
Chuan Xiong Wan eliminates wind-obstruction, transforms phlegm-saliva, benefits throat/diaphragm, clears head/eye pain and vertigo.
Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba - dirt removed) (each 7.5 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (0.5 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix - awn removed) (1.5 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (3.5 liang).
Grind into powder, refine honey to form pills. Make 50 pills from 0.5 liang of powder. Take 1 pill per dose, chew thoroughly, swallow with aged tea clear liquid after meals and before bed.
He Jian's Fang Feng Tong Sheng San plus Ban Xia treats wind-phlegm cough. (Formula see Epilepsy.)
Qian Min Tang (Thousand Thread Decoction) (Formula see Wheezing.)
Jie Gu treats phlegm-cough with inability to eat using Hou Po Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction). (Formula see Constipation.)
[Shan] Wheezing Cough. Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus) ground to powder, mixed with ginger juice and clear tea, taken before bed.
[Li Gao] Treats phlegm-cough where eating is possible, using Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) for mild purgation. (Formula see Shang Han Lun.)
[Zhu Danxi] Yin Deficiency Cough is primarily treated with Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Zhu Li (Bambusae Succus) and Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Juice). Cough in the yin aspect mostly belongs to yin deficiency; treat with Zhi Mu Zhi Sou (Anemarrhena Cough-Stopping Formula), do not use Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) because of its acrid-dispersing nature. Severe Lung deficiency cough occurs in those who indulge in lust and have Kidney deficiency; use Ren Shen Gao (Ginseng Paste) assisted by Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).
[Luo Tianyi] Tuan Shen San (Round Ginseng Powder) treats unsmooth pulse qi, treating cough/wheezing to stop cough.
Zi Tuan Shen (Purple Round Ginseng), Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 cup of water and 1 Wumei (Mume Fructus), decoct to 70%, strain, and take warm after meals.
Ren Shen Kuan Hua Gao (Ginseng Farfara Paste) treats Spleen/Stomach deficiency-cold, chronic cough, fullness/stuffiness in throat/diaphragm, cough with phlegm-saliva, vomiting/nausea, abdominal/hypochondriac distension, lower back/shoulder pain, or consumptive cold-cough, and all recent/chronic coughs unresponsive to other medicines.
Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos - stems removed), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix - rhizome removed), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus - stems removed), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix et Rhizoma - rhizome removed), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex - coarse branches removed) (each 1 liang).
Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills like chicken heads. Take 1 pill per dose after meals, chew thoroughly, send down with light ginger tea. Or divide one pill into four doses, allow to dissolve in mouth.
[Shi Liao Ben Cao] Treats persistent cough. Huang Ming Jiao (Colla Corii Asini clarified) is roasted until half-charred, ground to powder. Take 1 qian bi (approx. 3-5g) per dose, with 2 qian bi of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) powder. Use 1.8 cups of Dou Chi (Sojae Semens Praeparatum) decoction, a little scallion, boil in a pot for one boiling point, pour in honey after boiling. Sip 3-5 mouthfuls when coughing occurs.
[Ben Cao Yan Yi] Treats sixteen types of asthma/cough.
Huang Ming Jiao (Colla Corii Asini clarified) (1 liang, roasted), Ma Dou Ling (Aristolochiae Fructus), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma - roasted), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) (soaked in ginger juice for 3 days), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (0.5 liang), Xing Ren (Pruni Semen) (peeled and cored, each 1 liang for the above items).
Grind into powder. Take 1 large qian per dose, add 1 cup of water, decoct to 70%. Take before bed after meals. Use appropriate decoction as guiding vehicle based on syndrome. Lung cough with upper wheezing and rapid breathing: add Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), decoct. Diaphragm cough producing round lumps of phlegm: mix medicine with Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Juice) and swallow. Consumptive cough: add Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) powder, decoct together. Cold cough worse at dawn: add 3 cun of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), decoct together. Blood cough with continuous bouts: add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) powder and dates, decoct together. Acute cough with thick sticky sputum: add Wumei (Mume Fructus) and Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), decoct together. Postpartum cough with back/scapular pain: add 3 cun of Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and a little Huang La (Beeswax), decoct together. Heat cough worse at night: add 1 bi of honey and Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), decoct together. Asthma cough with rattling sound like sawing wood: add 3 Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), decoct together. Kidney cough: add Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) and Bai Yi Tang (Mel Album), decoct together. The above sixteen types of cough-phlegm, if decocted and taken according to method, are invariably effective. This formula was passed down from a specialist family in the capital due to heavy bribery by eunuchs; it has been tested repeatedly with success.

[Zhang Congzheng] Chang Zhongming suffered from alternating chills/fever, occasional cough (1-2 sounds), sallow complexion with weakness, aversion to food, night sweats, gradual emaciation. Various physicians treated it as deficiency consumption, using Er Shi Si Wei Shao Gan San (Twenty-Four Ingredient Roasted Liver Powder), Deer Antler, and Achyranthes Bidentata for two years of tonification. Phlegm emerged from mouth, lower body became deficient. Dai Ren diagnosed: Upper Excess. First induced vomiting with涌剂 (Emetic Agents) to expel 2-3 sheng of phlegm. Then used Chai Hu Yin Zi (Bupleurum Drink) to descend fire and benefit water. Within a month, recovered. What is this syndrome named? The Classics call it Er Yang Bing (Two Yang Disease). Er Yang disease originates in Heart/Spleen, hidden grievances. Heart affected leads to blood stasis, thus women miss periods. Spleen affected leads to flavor transformation failure, thus men have scant sperm. These two syndromes differ in name but are identical in reality. Zhongming's illness is flavor transformation failure. In Chikou Town, a man in his twenties suffered consumptive cough for years, voice wanting to come out but not. Dai Ren asked if he took medicine. He said: Poor family, never took medicine. Dai Ren said: Young and strong, not taking random medicine is curable. First induced vomiting with bitter agents, then purged heavily with Zhou Che Wan (Boat Cart Pill) and Jun Chuan Wan (River Dredging Pill), then took heavy agents and indeed recovered. A farmer suffered consumptive cough, one emesis one purge, reduced by more than half. Then took Ren Shen Bu Fei Tang (Ginseng Tonify Lung Decoction), before bed took Bing Lang Wan (Areca Pill) to promote appetite.
