[Danxi] Discussion on Menstrual Blood Being Either Purple or Black: Menstrual blood is Yin blood. Yin must follow Yang, therefore its color is red, inheriting the color of Fire. Blood is the companion of Qi; when Qi is hot, blood is hot; when Qi is cold, blood is cold; when Qi ascends, blood ascends; when Qi descends, blood descends; when Qi coagulates, blood coagulates; when Qi stagnates, blood stagnates; when Qi is clear, blood is clear; when Qi is turbid, blood is turbid. Often, clots form due to Qi coagulation. Pain before menstruation begins is due to Qi stagnation. Pain after menstruation ends is due to deficiency of both Qi and Blood. A pale color indicates deficiency, mixed with dampness. Erratic and reckless flow is due to chaotic Qi. Purple color indicates Qi heat. Black color indicates extreme heat. Nowadays, people see purple, black, painful, or clotted menstrual blood and generally attribute it to Wind-Cold, administering warm-hot remedies, which leads to disaster swiftly. This largely stems from the *Pathogenesis* chapter, which attributes all menstrual disorders to Wind-Cold invasion, leading to a habitual custom. One might ask: Black is the color of Water in the North, and purple is lighter than black; is it not cold? I say: The medical classics state "Excess brings harm, succession brings control." When heat is extreme, it necessarily incorporates the transformation of Water; thus, severe heat manifests as purple, and extreme heat as black. Moreover, women are often stubborn and narrow-minded, with doubled desires, causing the Fire of Jueyang in the Zang-Fu organs to rise daily; is this not Heat? If it were Wind-Cold, it must be externally acquired; even if so, it accounts for only one or two in a thousand.

[Maijue] The Master said: Pulse is micro, Qi and Blood are deficient. In youth, this is blood loss. Diarrhea during lactation is acceptable; otherwise, this is Ju Jing (Resident Menstruation), coming once every three months. The Master said: Cun pulse micro and choppy. Micro indicates Wei Qi deficiency; choppy indicates Blood/Qi exhaustion. Wei deficiency causes short breath and dry form. Blood deficiency causes inverted form. Ying-Wei deficiency causes erroneous speech. Zuyang pulse floating and choppy: choppy indicates Wei Qi deficiency, causing short breath, dry throat/mouth/bitter taste, and fluid loss from stagnant Stomach Qi. Shaoyin pulse micro and slow: micro indicates essence loss; slow indicates cold in Yin; choppy indicates blood does not come; this is Ju Jing, once every three months. Question: A woman pregnant three months, Master pulses and says she is not pregnant, but menstruation should occur. What is the pulse? How to distinguish? Master said: Cun pulse Wei floating and large, Ying reversed and weak. Floating/large indicates strong Qi; weak/reversed indicates little Blood. Solitary Yang exhales, Yin cannot inhale. Two energies do not stop. Wei descends, Ying exhausts. Yin accumulates cold, Yang gathers heat. Yang excess lacks moisture, meridians lack substance. Yin deficiency, Yang goes forward... thus little blood, alternating chills, dry throat, sweating, thick/frequent urination, excessive saliva. This is double deficiency, fluid leakage, hence not pregnancy. Accumulated烦满 blood, receiving one channel per month, comes once every three months. Yin excess causes discharge, named Ju Jing. (Right pulse floating/large, left pulse reversed/weak.)

[Bencao] Women's diseases often involve fluctuating menstrual volume or timing, with intermittent pain. Physicians call this "Menstrual Disease" without distinguishing Yin overcoming Yang or Yang overcoming Yin, hence low efficacy. If Yin overcomes Yang, Uterus becomes cold, Blood fails to circulate ("Heaven cold, earth frozen, water freezes"), causing scarcity and delay. If Yang overcomes Yin, Blood flows excessively ("Heaven hot, earth warm, water boils"), causing abundance and advance. Differentiate Yin/Yang, harmonize Qi/Blood, prevent mutual overcoming, aim for balance. Use Zi Shiying Wan.
