Corpse odor, tongue retraction, and testicular contraction indicate Liver Qi exhaustion (Liver Jue). Inability to close the mouth indicates Spleen Qi exhaustion. Muscles are not smooth, and lips evert indicate Stomach Qi exhaustion. Hair stands erect, teeth wither, and enuresis indicate Kidney Qi exhaustion. Hair is scorched, face is black, eyes stare fixedly, eyelids are closed unable to see indicate Yin Qi exhaustion. Eye sockets are sunken, ocular axis tilts, and sweat beads like pearls indicate Yang Qi exhaustion. Post-illness wheezing and diarrhea indicate impending Spleen pulse exhaustion. Eyes fixed straight, hands relaxed and open, and eyes rolling up indicate Taiyang meridian Qi exhaustion.
Saliva spitting. Sound like snoring. Face red. Face blue-black, lips cyan. Renzhong (GV26) full, lips everted. Hair and eyebrows stand upward. Subungual flesh black. Palms lack lines, umbilicus protrudes, dorsum pedis swollen. Face cyan, desire only to lie prone, eyes cannot see, sweat like oil: this is Liver Qi exhaustion, death in eight days. Eyebrows collapse: Gallbladder Qi exhaustion. Hands and feet nails cyan or falling off, shouting and cursing incessantly: Sinew Qi exhaustion, death in eight days. Shoulder breathing, staring fixedly: Heart Qi exhaustion, immediate death. Hair straight like hemp, inability to flex or extend, continuous spontaneous sweating: Small Intestine Qi exhaustion, death in six days. Cold mouth, swollen feet, abdominal heat, distension, uncontrolled diarrhea without sensation: Spleen Qi exhaustion, death in five days. Spinal pain and swelling, body heavy unable to turn over: Stomach Qi exhaustion, death in five days. Dry ears, swollen dorsal tongue, hematuria, red loose stool: Flesh Qi exhaustion, death in nine days. Mouth open, breath does not return: Lung Qi exhaustion, death in three days. Unremitting diarrhea: Large Intestine Qi exhaustion. Withered teeth, black face, yellow sclera, waist feels like breaking, spontaneous sweating: Kidney Qi exhaustion, death in four days. Yellow withered and falling teeth: Bone Qi exhaustion.
When the Five Zang organs have exhausted their essence, Shen (Spirit) cannot reside, voice hoarse.
Groping at clothes and bed, delirious speech: Yangming meridian Qi exhaustion; confused speech, mutism and loss of voice: Heat disease may still survive.
Pulse floating and surging, body sweating like oil, ceaseless wheezing: Lung Qi exhaustion. (Sticky sweat not flowing, surging pulse and ceaseless wheezing, True Qi scatters outward.)
Yang remains alone, body looks smoke-burned, staring fixedly shaking head: Heart Qi exhaustion. (Heart is Fire organ, thus Yang heat remains alone. Smoke-burned is the image of extreme fire scorching.)
Lips and corners of mouth reverse to cyan, limbs sweating: Liver Qi exhaustion. (Lips belong to Spleen, cyan belongs to Wood. Wood overacts on Earth, hence called 'reverse'.)
Perioral dark yellow, soft sweat, jaundice: Spleen Qi exhaustion. (Water color overwhelms Earth. Cold sweat, yellow body, Spleen True Yuan scatters.)
Incontinence of urine and feces,狂言 (wild talk), eyes rolling back, staring fixedly: Kidney Qi exhaustion. (Urine and feces are controlled by the two yin orifices of Kidney. Incontinence means gates do not close, Water Essence perishes, pupils lose spirit.)
If Yang Qi exhausts first and Yin Qi follows, the body and face will be green at death. (Yang escapes first, Yin exhausts later, thus green color remains.)
If Yin Qi exhausts first and Yang Qi follows, the body, face, and extremities will be red at death, axillae warm, epigastrium hot. (Yin escapes first, Yang exhausts later, thus red color appears. Remaining Yang not yet exhausted, thus axillae warm, heart hot.)
Unable to take fluids, body insensible, alternating calm and chaotic: Stomach Qi exhaustion. (Stomach receives water and grain, nourishing muscles.)
Six Fu organs Qi exhaustion: cold feet, curled toes. Five Zang organs Qi exhaustion: incontinence, insensible extremities. Hand Taiyin (Lung) Qi exhaustion leads to scorched skin and hair.
Taiyin is Lung, which circulates Qi to moisten skin and hair. Thus if Qi fails to nourish, skin and hair scorch and fluids depart. Departure of fluids injures skin joints (skin texture). Injury to skin joints leads to dry skin and broken hair. (Fluids depart, skin joints flatten, hair lacks nourishment and breaks.) Broken hair means hair dies first. Bing day severe, Ding day death. (Fire overacts on Metal. Others follow this pattern.) Hand Shaoyin (Heart) Qi exhaustion leads to blocked vessels, blocked vessels lead to stagnant blood, stagnant blood leads to loss of luster, thus face turns black like charcoal. This is blood dying first. Ren day severe, Gui day death.
Foot Taiyin (Spleen) Qi exhaustion leads to vessels failing to nourish lips. Lips are the root of muscle.
Vessels failing to nourish leads to non-smooth muscles. Non-smooth muscles lead to fullness. Fullness leads to lip eversion. Lip eversion means muscle dies first. Jia day severe, Yi day death.
Foot Shaoyin (Kidney) Qi exhaustion leads to withered bones. Shaoyin is Winter pulse, hidden and warming marrow. Thus if marrow not warm, flesh does not adhere to bone. If flesh and bone not intimate, flesh becomes flaccid and recedes. Flaccid receding flesh makes teeth appear long and dirty. (Gum recedes, teeth appear long and dirty.) Hair lacks luster. Lack of luster means bone dies first. Wu day severe, Ji day death.
Foot Jueyin (Liver) Qi exhaustion leads to sinew contraction pulling testicles and tongue. Jueyin is Liver. Liver is the convergence of sinews. Sinews gather at genitalia and connect to tongue root. Thus vessels failing to nourish leads to sinew contraction. Contraction pulls testicles and tongue, causing tongue retraction and testicular contraction. This is sinew dying first. Geng day severe, Xin day death.
Three Yin Qi all exhausted leads to dizziness and blurred vision. Blurred vision is loss of Zhi (Will). Loss of Zhi means Will dies first, death brings blurred vision. (Cannot see. Depletion of Yin causes blurred vision.)
Six Yang Qi all exhausted leads to separation of Yin and Yang. Separation of Yang and Yin leads to leaking pores, absolute sweat emerges, large as beads, turning but not flowing. Morning prediction evening death, evening prediction morning death.
