It is discussed that when the Liver and Heart viscera accumulate toxic heat for a long time, it attacks and manifests in the eyes, causing the formation of Ding Yi (a type of corneal opacity resembling a nail). Its appearance resembles a silver nail. This is because the Liver belongs to Wood and opens into the Eyes; the Heart belongs to Fire and is the "child" organ relative to the Liver. Currently, with accumulated heat in the Heart, the heat invades the Liver, steaming and stimulating aggregation, thus forming Ding Yi.
For treating rising Yang Qi, blood vessels penetrating and rushing, redness and swelling pain of the eyes, sores on the eyelids, sudden onset of Ding Yi, gradual erosion of the cornea (Hei Jing), blurred vision, tightness making it difficult to open the eyes, use the Tuimo Wan (Membrane-Removing Pill) formula:
Xiong Dan (Bear Bile, half liang, ground) Niu Dan Zhi (Ox Bile Juice, one he) Zhu Dan Zhi (Pig Bile Juice, from five pigs) Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitidis Semen, one liang, stir-fried) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, one liang, remove stamens)
Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, one liang) Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, half liang) Jue Ming Zi (Cassiae Semen, half liang, stir-fried) Gou Qi (Lycii Fructus, half liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, one liang, honey-fried)
Take the above ten ingredients. Excluding the ox and pig bile juices, grind the remaining eight ingredients into fine powder. Mix with the two bile juices to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take fifty pills per dose, administered after meals with Jingjie Decoction (Schizonepeta Decoction).
For treating toxic heat in the Liver and Heart, with Ding Yi invading the cornea, use the Qingxiangzi Wan (Celosiae Seed Pill) formula:
Qing Xiang Zi (Celosiae Semen) Lan Shi (Isatidis Folium/Fructus context dependent, here likely Isatis leaf/fruit derivative) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, remove albedo, bran-fried) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, cut and stir-fried) Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each two liang) Cao Jue Ming (Cassiae Semen) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens)
Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, remove seedlings and leaves) Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, remove roots and joints) Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, each one and a half liang) Li Yu Dan (Carp Bile) Ji Dan (Chicken Gallbladder, each one piece, dried in shade)
Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Antelope Horn, shaved, three liang)
Grind the above fifteen ingredients into fine powder using a mortar and sieve. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take twenty-five pills per dose, administered after meals with warm water, three times daily. It also treats all types of internal and external eye obstructions.
For treating internal opacities caused by wind pathogen leading to Ding Yi, use the Qingxiangzi Tang (Celosiae Seed Decoction) formula:
Qing Xiang Zi (Celosiae Semen) Rui Ren (Pruni Semen) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove black skin) Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) Wei Ru (Polygonati Rhizoma) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens, each one and a half liang) Qin Pi (Fraxini Cortex, two fen)
Shan Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus) Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, remove seedlings and soil) Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, selected) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each one liang)
Coarsely crush and sieve the above twelve ingredients. Take three qian bi (measurements) per dose, add two zhan (measurements) of water, decoct until eight parts remain, remove dregs, and take after meals.
For treating white membrane with晕赤 (halo redness), eroding the cornea to form opacity, horizontally obstructing the pupil, eventually becoming Ding Yi, use the Huang Qin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) formula:
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove stamens) Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, cut) Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove seedlings) Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, each two liang) Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) Shan Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, each one and a half liang) Wei Ru (Polygonati Rhizoma) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed three times and baked, each two and a half liang) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed, six and a half liang) Pu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, ground, five liang)
Coarsely crush and sieve the above twelve ingredients. Take five qian bi per dose, add two zhan of water, decoct until one zhan remains, remove dregs, and take after meals.
For treating toxic heat of Ding Yi, use the Chu Re Yin (Clear Heat Drink) formula:
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, remove black heart) Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, remove rhizome head, stir-fried) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove forks) Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each one liang)
Coarsely crush and sieve the above eight ingredients. Take two qian bi per dose, add one zhan of water, decoct until seven parts remain, remove dregs, and take warm on an empty stomach and after meals.
For treating Heart heat and generation of Ding Yi, use the Zhen Xin Wan (Calming the Heart Pill) formula:
Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, remove heart) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Sandalwood, remove black skin) Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, remove seedlings and leaves) Chong Wei Zi (Leonuri Fructus) Shan Yu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, each one liang)
Grind the above eight ingredients into fine powder using a mortar and sieve. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take ten pills per dose, administered on an empty stomach with tea water.
For treating Bladder heat, wind-toxin in the Liver and Diaphragm, generating Ding Yi, use the Sheng Ma Tang (Cimicifugae Decoction) formula:
Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, cut) Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shaved - *Note: Modern substitute often used*) Wei Ru (Polygonati Rhizoma) Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, each one liang)
Cut the above five ingredients into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Take five qian bi per dose, add one and a half zhan of water, decoct until eight parts remain. Remove dregs, add half a qian bi of Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) and a small amount of Zhu Li (Bambusa Sap), and take warm on an empty stomach.
For treating Ding Yi with extremely purulent base, persisting for a long time without healing, use the Jue Ming San (Cassia Powder for Eye Dripping) formula:
Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha, crushed and processed by water levigation) Zhen Zhu Mo (Pearl Powder) Hu Po (Amber, each three fen) Wu Zei Gu (Sepiae Endoconcha, half liang) Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum, ground, one qian)
Grind the above five ingredients together to an extremely fine powder. Using copper tweezers, take an amount the size of a soybean and apply to the affected area, three times daily.
For treating stubborn opacities and Ding Yi in the eyes, use the Wei Ru Wan (Polygonatum Pill) formula:
