The discussion states: The *Qianjin Fang* mentions that Gu poison (Gu Poison, a category of diseases caused by toxic substances or parasites) has thousands of varieties, each different. Some patients die after three years, while others die after one month or one hundred days. The diseases they induce also vary; some present with fresh blood in the stool, some prefer to lie in dark rooms, and some exhibit abnormal mental states, alternating between anger and joy. Some suffer from heavy, sore, and painful limbs, with differences whether the condition is relaxed or tense. By inferring from the five types of Gu, there are Snake Gu, Lizard Gu, Dung Beetle Gu, Toad Gu, and Grass Gu. If it is Snake Gu, the complexion is greenish-yellow, the pulse is surging and strong. At onset, there is internal heat and stifling sensation in the abdomen, distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, swelling and stiffness of the tongue root, reluctance to speak, frequent body pain, a sensation of insects crawling in the heart and abdomen, a reddish complexion, and dry lips and mouth. If untreated for years, the liver and diaphragm will rot, leading to death. If it is Lizard Gu, the complexion is red and yellow, the pulse is floating, slippery, and short. At onset, there is slight fullness in the lower back and back, numbness in the hands, feet, lips, and mouth, tension in the throat vessels, and sores on the tongue. If untreated for two hundred days, it consumes the heart and liver until they rot completely, leading to purulent bloody stools, emaciation, a withered black complexion, and death. If it is Toad Gu, the complexion is blue-white, the pulse is deep and soft. At onset, there is throat obstruction, aversion to hearing human speech, abdominal borborygmus with qi moving up and down, worsening like prolonged rainy weather, a sensation of Gu worms moving under the skin and flesh, vexatious heat in the hands and feet, craving for vinegar, coughing up purulent blood, a complexion alternating between white and blue, abdominal distension, and a shape resembling a toad. If the Gu can be vomited out in the shape of a tadpole, it is Toad Gu. If untreated for years, it consumes the spleen and stomach until they rot completely, leading to cracked lips and mouth and death. If it is Dung Beetle Gu, the pulse is slow and scattered. At onset, the body alternates between cold and hot, hands and feet are vexatiously painful, vomiting occurs intermittently, urine is yellow and red, abdominal stifling and chest pain occur, the complexion is mostly blue, or dung beetles with legs and wings are vomited out. This is Dung Beetle Gu. If untreated for years, it consumes the blood vessels until they are exhausted, leading to death. To determine if it is Gu or not, ask the patient to spit into water; if it sinks, it is Gu poison; if it floats, it is not. It is also said that in the morning, take the first bucket of well water before eating, and have the patient spit into it. If the saliva sinks straight down like a pillar, it is Gu poison; if it sinks and scatters without reaching the bottom, it is Grass Gu poison. It is also said to chew soybeans; if they swell and peel, it is Gu; if they do not rot or peel, it is not Gu. It is also said to place swan skin under the patient's bed without their knowledge; if the condition worsens, it is Gu. It is also said to take a fresh egg, boil it, peel it, keeping the yolk and white intact, gently bite it with teeth at night without breaking it, wait for the time it takes to cook rice, spit it onto a tile overnight with dew, and check the next day; if it turns dark green, it is Gu poison. In the past, someone ate a newly transformed carp and was poisoned, suffering from heart and abdominal pain, hardness below the heart, fever, vexation, desire to wash with water, and body shaking as if a fish in water. A physician diagnosed it as Gu, but the family said there was no such poison in the wild and did not treat it as Gu, resulting in death.
