[Text] Discussion: The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states that the Kidney governs water and receives and stores the essence of the five zang organs and six fu organs. It also says that the Kidney corresponds to the bones, and the bones are the residence of the marrow. Therefore, if excessive desires and injuries lead to the depletion of essence and marrow, one must necessarily use kidney-tonifying preparations to nourish it. Whenever there is deficiency, tonification should be applied; it is not necessary to exclusively use hot-natured medicines. In cases of Kidney deficiency, priority should be given to replenishing essence and marrow. Regarding the excessive rigidity of yang-acting agents, the *Shengji Jing* (Holy濟 Classic) states, "The Tian Gui (substances promoting reproductive development) dries up and the Ying blood becomes depleted," which refers to this situation.

[Treatment] For treating visceral weakness and exhaustion, flaccidity and weakness of the waist and legs, reconnecting sinews and bones, securing essence and marrow, calming the Hun and Po souls, warding off epidemic qi, rejuvenating the skin, strengthening yang, and prolonging life. Yushuang Wan (Jade Frost Pill) Formula: Longgu (Dragon Bone, 1 jin; select high-quality pieces that stick to the tongue, grind into powder, wash with water three times, dry in the sun; or steam with 1 dou of black beans for one shi period, wrap in cooked silk bag, steam again, then dry); Tianxiong (Aconitum Lateralis Radix Preparata, 10 liang; select large pieces, soak in wine for seven days; dig a pit, burn charcoal until the pit is red, remove charcoal quickly, sweep clean, pour 2 sheng of vinegar into the pit, wait until dry, then throw in Tianxiong while hot, cover with a basin, seal with soil overnight, remove peel and core); Lurong (Deer Antler Glue/Horn, 0.5 jin; select horn with brain matter attached to the top bone, roast to remove hair, cut into 3-cun pieces, soak in wine for one shi period, roast slowly); Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, 5 liang; soak in wine for one shi period, steam, dry, crush separately); Zixiaohua (Calycospermum Flower, substitute with Mu Zei if unavailable); Muli (Oyster Shell, thick pieces, calcine to powder, 3 liang each); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, stir-fry heartless pieces); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine for one shi period, slice, wash with wine, roast); Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, wash clean, soak in wine overnight, roast); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, roast); Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, remove roots, roast); Cishi (Magnetitum, quench in vinegar seven times); Dansha (Cinnabaris, grind separately, 2 liang each); Jiu Zi (Allii Tuberosi Semen, lightly stir-fry, 5 liang); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark); Xiang Zi (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fry, 1 liang each). The above sixteen ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with half refined honey and half wine, pounded thousands of times, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills with warm wine on an empty stomach before dinner, and thirty pills with cold wine before sleep, followed by a cup of cold wine.

[Treatment] Tonifies deficiency, reconnects severed meridians, benefits essence and marrow, treats hundred diseases. Dihuang Jian Wan (Rehmannia Decoction Pill) Formula: Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, 7 jin, wash five times, extract juice, add remaining residue to 2 sheng wine, grind together, squeeze out juice, slow-fire boil in silver/copper vessel into paste); Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, dried); Sheng Gan Dihuang (Dried Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, dried, 5 liang each); Shanyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 2 liang); Huangqi (Astragali Radix, sliced); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, remove heart); Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, dry); Baiziren (Platycladi Semen); Gan Zaorou (Dried Jujube Flesh, dried); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart, 1 liang each); Ganqi (Lac Chinensis, 3 qian, stir-fry in wine until smoke ceases); Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, remove stems); Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, nine-joint type, 2 liang each); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark, 0.5 liang). The above fifteen ingredients, excluding the previous paste, are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with the paste, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt water, increasing to fifty pills.

[Treatment] Benefits essence and marrow, warms the middle, directs rebellious qi downward, calms the five zang organs, facilitates the waist and legs, eliminates bladder hernia, and removes cold qi stabbing pain in the umbilicus and hypochondrium. Buguzhi Wan (Psoraleae Fructus Pill) Formula: Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried); Xiang Zi (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried); Binglang (Arecae Semen, chicken-heart type, sliced); Huluba (Trigonellae Semen); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart); Jingsanleng (Bletillae Rhizoma, wrap in wet paper, bake until ripe, crush); Lianshi (Meliae Fructus, remove pits, stir-fry with bran); Qing Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soak in water, remove white pith, 1 liang each); Zhike (Aurantii Fructus, remove pulp, stir-fry with bran); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core); Bidengqie (Schizonepetae Fructus? Dihuang Shihu Wan (Rehmannia and Dendrobium Pill) Formula: Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, 5 jin, grind to extract juice, boil in silver/copper vessel until half remains, add 4 liang white honey, slow-fire boil into paste); Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, remove roots); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, remove sprouts, slice, soak in wine, dry); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, remove wrinkled skin, slice, dry); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark); Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried); Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue, stir-fry until dry); Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, soak in wine, crush into powder separately); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core); Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, dried); Lurong (Deer Antler Horn, remove hair, roast with butter, 1 liang each). Fupenzi Wan (Rubus Fruit Pill) Formula: Fupenzi (Rubi Fructus, remove stems); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart); Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark); Shanyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma); Lurong (Deer Antler Horn, remove hair, roast with butter, 0.5 liang each); Huangqi (Astragali Radix, sliced); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, slice, dry); Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, dried, 1 liang each); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, remove heart, 1 fen); Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, remove roots); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, remove wrinkled skin, slice, dry, 3 fen each). Tianxiong Shihu Wan (Tianxiong and Dendrobium Pill) Formula: Tianxiong (Aconitum Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core); Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis, remove roots); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, remove wrinkled skin, slice, dry); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, slice, dry); Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, remove rhizome); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart, 1 liang each); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark); Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried, 2.5 liang each); Sheng Gan Dihuang (Dried Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, dried, 3.5 liang). The above nine ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Take 3 liang of Naoqi (Sea Otter Penis), finely slice, soak in 2 sheng wine for two nights. Remove fascia, grind meat, filter through cloth to remove dregs. Boil into paste using alternating civil and martial fire, mix with the drug powder, pound thousands of times, and form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take twenty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt water; if too thick, add more cooked honey.

[Treatment] Supplements insufficiency, fills essence and marrow, removes wind to reverse whitening. Jiuxian Wan (Nine Immortals Pill) Formula: Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, 20 jin, grind to extract juice); Sheng Niuxi (Fresh Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 10 jin, grind to extract juice); Shengjiang (Fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma, 3 jin, extract juice); Jushengzi (Sesami Fructus/Nigra, steam in steamer, dry in sun nine times, soak in water, remove skin, stir-fry, grind); Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, soak in wine for three days, wash water to remove floating ones, dry, take powder separately); Xingren (Pruni Semen, soak in water, remove tips, double-kernel stir-fry, fine grind); Taoren (Persicae Semen, boil in water, remove skin and tips, double-kernel stir-fry, fine grind); Jili Zi (Tribuli Fructus, stir-fry, remove spines, grind, 1 sheng each); Bai Mi (White Honey, 1 jin). The above nine ingredients: first measure 3 sheng of Dihuang juice, put into silver/copper vessel. Mark the level. Add remaining Dihuang juice, slow-fire boil to mark. Add Niuxi juice, boil to mark. Add Shengjiang juice, boil to mark. Keep fire at "fish-eye" boiling state. Add Xingren and Taoren powder, then Jusheng powder, then Jili powder, then Tusizi powder, then Bai Mi. Stir constantly. When ready to pill, pound 3,000 times, form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine, increase to forty. Take again in the evening. After 100 days, white hair turns yellow. After 200 days, turns black. All winds are eliminated, especially benefiting waist/kidneys, boosting qi and brightening eyes.

[Treatment] Tonifies lower yuan, benefits essence and marrow, removes all wind-cold. Baoshou Taiyang Dan (Longevity Sun Pill) Formula: Liuhuang (Sulfur, bright quality, grind for two shi periods to get 11 liang powder); Qingyan (Blue Salt, 4.5 liang, grind); Yangqishi (Actinolite, grind to powder separately); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core); Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soak in wine, slice, dry); Chushi (Broussonetiae Fructus); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark, 3 liang each). The above four herbal ingredients (Note: Text says "four herbs" but lists eight items total including minerals/salts) are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with the first three ground drugs. Grind uniformly. Take 6 liang of Ganjiang (Dried Zingiberis Rhizoma) fine powder, make pill with ginger-flour paste, form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take twenty to thirty pills on an empty stomach with wine.

[Treatment] Warms lower yuan, benefits essence and marrow, strengthens yang and boosts qi. Bajitian Wan (Morinda Pill) Formula: Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart, light stir-fry); Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus); Longgu (Dragon Bone, grind to powder); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, grind to paste); Jiu Zi (Allii Tuberosi Semen, light stir-fry); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core, 1 liang each); Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried); Xiang Zi (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried, 2 liang each). The above eight ingredients, excluding the paste, are crushed, sifted into powder, gradually mixed into the Rongzhrongu paste, ground uniformly, mixed with steamed jujube flesh, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take fifteen to twenty pills on an empty stomach with salt water or warm wine.

[Treatment] Strengthens primordial qi, benefits essence and marrow, tonifies deficiency. Jin suo Wan (Golden Lock Pill) Formula: Longgu (Dragon Bone, 1 liang, bathe in Maoxiang soup three times, grind like flour); Jitou Fen (Euryales Semen Powder, 3 liang); Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, sliced); Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus, soak in wine, take flesh, dry); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, remove wrinkled skin, slice, dry); Lianhua Rui (Lotus Stamen, harvested July-August, dried, 2 liang each). The above eight ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder. Make pills with Jinying (Chrysobalanus fruit) paste; if unavailable, use refined honey. Form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take twenty to thirty pills on an empty stomach with wine.

[Treatment] Treats kidney cold and emaciation, generates yang qi, supplements essence and marrow. Lujiao Shuang Wan (Deer Antler Frost Pill) Formula: Lujiao Shuang (Deer Antler Frost); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, remove wrinkled skin, slice, dry); Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, roasted until cracked, remove peel and core); Bajitian (Morinda Officinalis Radix, remove heart); Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Fructus, remove eyes and closed mouths, stir-fry until sweat appears, 1 liang each). The above five ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with wine-boiled flour paste, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take twenty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine.

[Treatment] Treats essence consumption and blood deficiency, weak yang, regulates Ying and Wei, facilitates waist and legs. Xiangrong Wan (Fragrant Antler Pill) Formula: Lurong (Deer Antler Horn, remove hair, soak in wine, boil, dry, 1 liang); Shexiang (Moschus, fine grind, 1 fen); Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus, remove pits, dry, 2 liang); Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, sliced, 1 qian). The above three ingredients (Note: Text lists four items but says "three"), crush and sift into powder, mix in Shexiang, grind uniformly, mix with refined honey, form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt water.

[Treatment] Supplements essence and blood. Chushi Wan (Broussonetia Pill) Formula: Chushi (Broussonetiae Fructus, 0.5 jin, wash and stir-fry); Shanyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 4 liang); Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Ootheca, slice and stir-fry); Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, 2 liang each). The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with refined honey, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach and at noon with salt water.

[Treatment] Treats extreme essence depletion, fills marrow. Dihuang Jian (Rehmannia Decoction) Formula: Sheng Dihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, 1 jin, squeeze juice); Niusu (Cow Butter/Ghee, 1 jin); Bai Mi (White Honey, 1 jin). The above three ingredients: slow-fire boil Dihuang juice until half remains, add Niusu and boil again. After a while, add honey and stir uniformly. When consistency is right, store in porcelain. Take half a spoonful mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach and before dinner.

[Treatment] Nourishes essence and qi, benefits primordial yang. Longgu Wan (Dragon Bone Pill) Formula: Longgu (Dragon Bone); Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, remove heart, equal parts). The above two ingredients are crushed, sifted into powder, mixed with refined honey, and formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills on an empty stomach and before bed with cold water.

[Treatment] Strengthens primordial qi, benefits essence and marrow, moistens beard and temples, long-term use prevents irritability. Bizhen Wan (True Supplement Pill) Formula: Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, 0.5 jin, soak in wine overnight, remove wrinkled skin, slice, dry, grind to powder); Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, soak in wine overnight, wash clean, dry, grind to powder). The above two ingredients are pounded uniformly. Take 2 sheng of Sheng Dihuang juice. Slow-fire boil in silver/copper vessel into paste. Take 1 zhǎn of Qingzhuli (Green Bamboo Sap), sprinkle into paste occasionally. When thick and sticky, cool. Mix with previous drug powder, form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty to fifty pills on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt water, take again at noon.

[Treatment] Treats long-term kidney deficiency, essence and qi depletion, sore and heavy waist/legs, dull complexion, tinnitus, dryness/withering, weak sexual function. This is due to low essence and excessive desire, aiming to benefit essence. Lurong San (Deer Antler Powder) Formula: Lurong (Deer Antler Horn, remove hair, roast with butter). The above single ingredient is crushed, sifted into powder. Take 1 qian bi, gradually increase to 2 qian bi. On an empty stomach, brew strong Rongzhrongu wine (7 fen per zhǎn). Let cool slightly, add little salt, mix and take. If making pills: Lurong (Deer Antler Horn, remove hair, roast with butter, 1 liang), Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine overnight, dry), Chuangzi (Cnidii Fructus, wash, dry, 1 fen each). The above three ingredients are ground to powder, mixed with refined honey and pounded, formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take twenty to thirty pills with warm wine or salt water.

[Treatment] Treats extreme essence depletion, marrow deficiency/exhaustion, tonifies. Mirong Jian (Elk Antler Decoction) Formula: Mirong (Elk Antler Horn, 5 liang, remove hair, roast with butter until yellow). The above single ingredient is crushed, sifted into powder. Boil in 2 sheng clear wine in silver/copper vessel on slow fire into paste. Store in porcelain. Take half a spoonful mixed with warm water, on an empty stomach before eating.

[Treatment] Treats Spleen/Kidney qi deficiency, supplements marrow, unifies ears and eyes. Lingzhi Wan (Ganoderma Pill) Formula: Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1 jin, soak in rice water, change water periodically). The above single ingredient: scrape off peel and dirt with bamboo knife. Soak 3 days in summer, 7 days in winter. Dry in sun, crush in wooden mortar into powder. Mix with jujube flesh, form into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty to fifty pills on an empty stomach with jujube soup.

[Qiushi Formula] Generally, those refining Qiushi (Stone Urine) in the world only know the fire-refining method. This medicine requires both Yin and Stone methods to be perfect. Here are two methods. Fire-refined Qiushi is Yin within Yang, so it coagulates with fire. Dissolves in water, returning to formlessness, as substance is gone leaving only taste. This is the emptiness in Li (Fire trigram). Water-refined Qiushi is Yang within Yin, so it coagulates with water. Unchanged for a thousand years even in rain, taste is gone leaving substance. This is the solidity in Kan (Water trigram). Both originate from Heart and Kidney, flow to Small Intestine, containing Zheng Qi of Water/Fire, Snake/Tortoise. Borrowing Heaven/Earth water/fire to coagulate into body. Taking it replenishes Taiyang and Xianghuo viscera, serving as root of life. Specific formulas follow.

Yang Refining Method: Urine amount unlimited, approx. two buckets as one dan. First mix clear water with good Zaojia (Gleditsia Sinensis) thick juice, filter dregs with cloth. For every dan of urine, add 1 zhǎn of Zaojia juice. Stir rapidly with bamboo whisk for hundreds/thousands of turns. Wait for urine to clarify; white turbidity settles. Slowly discard clear part, keep only turbid sediment, combine into full bucket. Stir again with bamboo whisk for 100+ turns, wait for clarification, discard clear part. From dozens of dans, obtain 1-2 dou of thick sediment. Urine must be filtered through cloth first to avoid dregs, obtaining thick juice. Boil in clean pot, scrape down, crush, boil again in clear water to dissolve. Pour through double-layered筋纸 (fiber paper) in a sieve. Collect filtrate, boil dry again, dissolve in water, filter again. Stop when color is like frost/snow. Put into sealed sand box, seal mouth. Fire refine, pour out liquid. If not done, repeat 1-2 times. Stop when bright white jade color. Fine grind, put in sand box, seal. Nourish with fire on top and sides for 7 days/nights (longer is better), grind again. Take 2 qian on empty stomach with warm wine, or make pills with jujube flesh, size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills. Take Yang-refined on empty stomach, Yin-refined at noon. Each once, also called Huanyuan Dan. Previously someone had wasting disease with cough, all methods failed, took this and healed. Another with vertigo, abdominal distension, worsening to panting/danger, took this and recovered. This method is very labor-saving, small pot suffices. Body like metal/stone, never suddenly moist. Power far exceeds common methods. Chronic patients see effect after few doses.

Yin Refining Method: Urine 3-5 shi. Even if spoiled in summer, usable. Place in large basins, mix with >50% new water, rotate/stir hundreds of turns. Let settle, discard clear, keep turbid sediment. Add new water, stir again. More water is better. Clarify, discard clear. Stop when no foul odor, sediment like powder. Dry in sun, scrape. Like lead powder, bright white, lovely, no odor. Grind again. Mix with breast milk from nursing boy into paste. Dry in fierce sun. Repeat nine times. Must choose good sunny day to mix, borrowing solar true qi. On ninth time, make pills with jujube flesh, size of Sophora seeds. Dry. Take thirty pills with warm wine.

[Treatment] Treats five labors/seven injuries, essence/marrow deficiency. Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill) Formula: Lurong (Deer Antler Horn, remove hair, roast with butter); Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus); Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, slice, stir-fry until fibers break); Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus, remove rough bark); Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, stir-fried, 3 fen each); Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, soak in wine, steam, crush to powder, 1.5 liang); Rongzhrongu (Cistanche Deserticola, soak in wine, roast); Shanyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma); Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried, 1 liang each); Naqi (Sea Otter Penis, fine slice/grind 1 fen, soak in 2 sheng wine, filter fine, slow-fire boil into paste). The above ten ingredients: crush nine ingredients into powder. Use Naqi paste to pound and mix, form into pills size of Sophora seeds. Take thirty pills on empty stomach with warm wine.

[Treatment] Treats male deficiency/emaciation, essence/marrow decline, inability to eat.
