Commentary states: Due to exposure to wind pathogens, chills and fever arise. Initially, the pathogen invades the Couli (interstitial spaces of skin and muscles). When the Couli are open, there is a sensation of chilliness; when closed, there is fever accompanied by chest stuffiness. Wind pathogens enter the Stomach Meridian. Cold causes food to fail to transform, leading to loss of appetite; heat consumes internal Qi, leading to muscle wasting. When cold and heat combine and contend within, it results in shivering, tremors, and inability to eat. Thus, the *Neijing* states: "When a disease forms, it undergoes transformation; wind becomes chills and fever."
