(Acupuncture and Moxibustion Methods Attached)
The etiology of stroke (Zhong Feng) is the invasion of wind pathogen into the human body. Wind is the climate qi of the four seasons, distributed in the eight directions, governing the nourishment of all things. Wind coming from its own direction (the prevailing season) rarely causes fatal illness in humans; wind not coming from the prevailing direction (false pathogens) often causes fatal illness. The pathogen lodges between the skin and muscles, unable to penetrate inward or excrete outward. If it invades the meridians running through the five Zang organs, it produces diseases corresponding to each organ.
Wind striking the Heart: The patient can only lie on their back and cannot turn sideways. If the lips are red and sweating, it is treatable; if left for five or six days, death ensues.
Wind striking the Liver: The patient can only squat and cannot bow the head. If the color extends from both eyes to the forehead with a slight bluish tint, and the lips are blue and the face yellow, it is treatable. Urgently moxa the Ganshu (BL18) point 100 moxibustion cones. If the face is dark blue-black, or half yellow and half white, the liver is already damaged and untreatable; death occurs within a few days.
Wind striking the Spleen: Squatting with abdominal fullness, whole-body jaundice, and vomiting salty fluid is treatable. Urgently moxa the Pishu (BL20) point 100 moxibustion cones. If the hands and feet are blue, it is untreatable.
Wind striking the Kidney: Squatting with lower back pain. If observing the sides of the hypochondrium, there are no yellow patches as large as a cake, it is treatable. Urgently moxa the Shenshu (BL23) point 100 moxibustion cones. If the teeth are yellow-red, beard and hair stand erect, and the face has an earthy color, it is untreatable.
Wind striking the Lung: Lying on the back with chest fullness and shortness of breath, stomachal stuffiness and sweating. Observing the area below the eyes and on both sides of the nose extending down to the mouth, if the color is white, it is treatable. Urgently moxa the Feishu (BL13) point 100 moxibustion cones. If the color turns yellow, the lung is damaged and transformed into blood stasis, untreatable. The patient will speak deliriously, grasp at empty air or point to the ground, or pick at clothing seams. Death occurs after several days. Diagnosing weak, slow and large, floating and deficient, or slippery and scattered pulses also indicates wind strike. (From Volume I)
Shenshi Formula for Stroke with Sweating and Dry Retching: Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, 3 liang each), Dazao (Jujube, 12 pieces, broken).
Cut the three ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of water to obtain 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses. Another version uses 5 liang of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Avoid raw scallions, seaweed, and Songcai (Chinese Cabbage).
Another Guizhi Tang for Stroke causing bodily restlessness and pain, aversion to cold with spontaneous sweating, and stiffness/pain in the head and neck:
Guixin (5 liang), Shengjiang (8 liang), Gancao (roasted, 2 liang), Gegen (Kudzu Root, 8 liang), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 3 liang), Dazao (12 pieces, broken).
Cut the six ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water to obtain 2.5 sheng. Take 8 ge per dose, three times daily. Cover warmly to induce sweating. Lu Boyong found this effective. Avoid raw scallions, seaweed, and Songcai. (Ren Yu notes: This is Zhang Zhongjing's Guizhi Jia Gegen Tang. "Head stiff and painful" should be read as "Neck stiff and painful".)
Another Mahuang Tang for Stroke causing Qi rebellion, chest fullness, and shortness of breath:
Mahuang (Ephedra Herb, 3 liang, nodes removed), Gancao (roasted, 2 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 4 liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 50 pieces, skin and tips removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 3 liang), Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger, 5 liang), Fuling (Poria, 4 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 4 liang), Guixin (3 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 sheng, washed).
Boil the ten ingredients in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng before meals, three times daily. Very effective. Avoid seaweed, raw scallions, mutton, malt sugar, and Songcai.
Another Fuling Tang for Wind Pathogen entering the abdomen, stabbing pain under the heart, inability to lie down, or wandering pain in the hypochondrium, abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and extreme distress. This disease may result from deficiency-cold, retained food due to indigestion, or internal wind pathogen combined with other pathogens affecting the five Zang organs.
Fuling (2 liang), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Jiangjiang, Shaoyao, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Renshen (1 liang each), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, roasted, 3 fen), Gancao (roasted, 1 liang).
Finely cut the nine ingredients. Boil in 9 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng. Take three times daily. For severe cases, take one dose every interval equivalent to walking five li. If there is Qi stagnation in the chest, add 2 liang of Renshen. If one dose is ineffective, do not exceed two doses; it is miraculous. Avoid seaweed, Songcai, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, and strong vinegar. (From Volume IX)
Discussion on Stroke from Qianjin Yi Fang: The sages considered wind the chief of all diseases, deeply worrying. Therefore, one must avoid wind as one avoids arrows. To resist wind pathogens, decoctions and acupuncture/moxibustion are used. Why does old head wind recur? Because moxibustion was neglected, and the root was not removed. Thus, students should not rely solely on needles and decoctions. After recovery, without moxibustion, how can the root be pulled out? Although medicines are abundant, among all therapies, fire-moxa is best. At the onset of wind, urgent moxibustion should be applied. Once the fire is applied, the condition stabilizes. This is like boiling soup until cooked, instantly clearing vision—isn't this crucial? The sequence of moxibustion is: first Baihui (GV20), then Fengchi (GB20), then Dazhui (GV14), then Jianjing (GB21), then Quchi (LI11), then Jianshi (PC5), 3 cones each. Then Sanli (ST36), 5 cones. The cone size should be like a cocklebur seed, made firm. The mugwort must be well-aged. Thereafter, moxa these points daily until reaching the number of cones corresponding to the patient's age. Whenever one feels mental discomfort, moxa these points 3 cones each; do not underestimate this. Neglecting morning and evening leads to death. Beware! Beware!
Furthermore: When treating any disease, first moxa the aforementioned points, regardless of whether it is wind or not. This is a major medical technique. If illness persists beyond three months, or in cases of sudden death or stroke with aphasia, urgent moxibustion is required. Sudden death involves Qi entering the five Zang organs, akin to a latent wind attack. Enduring pain to avoid moxibustion leads to sudden death. Thus, moxibustion is essential.
Furthermore: Upon contracting wind, follow this sequence strictly. Deviation loses the key to treatment and endangers life.
Furthermore: Initial wind symptoms include flaccid limbs, confused spirit, blindness to recognition, and slurred speech. Stroke often originates from heat. Medications require avoiding alcohol, wheat products, mutton, raw vegetables, cold foods, pork, fish, chicken, beef, horse meat, garlic. Recovery is possible. Immediately administer Zhu Li Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction):
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 2 sheng), Sheng Ge Zhi (Fresh Kudju Juice, 1 sheng), Shengjiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 3 he).
Mix and warm. Divide into three doses: morning, afternoon, and night. If limbs feel better, proceed to the next formula. (Tu Ruowei mentions another version with Jing Li 1 sheng.)
Another Formula:
Mahuang (nodes removed), Fangfeng (1.5 liang each), Xiong, Fangji (Stephania Tetrandra Root), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), Renshen, Shaoyao, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Guixin, Gancao (roasted, 1 liang each), [Missing Ingredient] (1 sheng), Sheng Ge Zhi (0.5 sheng).
Cut the sixteen ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water to reduce by half, then add the sap/juice, boil to obtain 2.7 sheng. Divide into three warm doses. Take another dose after five days, up to three doses frequently. Avoid pork, cold water, seaweed, Songcai, raw scallions. As improvement occurs, proceed to the next formula.
Another Formula:
Zhu Li (2 sheng), Fangji (1 liang), Mahuang (3 liang, nodes removed), Fangfeng, Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Guixin, Xiong, Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Lingyangjiao (Saiga Antelope Horn, 2 liang each, powdered).
Cut the nine ingredients. Boil in 4 sheng of water with the sap to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses over two days, taking three doses total. If hands and feet are cold, add Shengjiang (5 liang) and Baizhu (2 liang). If unresolved, proceed to the next formula. Avoid raw scallions as before.
Another Formula:
Fangfeng, Mahuang (nodes removed), Shaoyao (1.5 liang each), Fangji, Guixin, Huangqin (1 liang each), Fuzi (prepared, 3 fen), Gancao (roasted), Baizhu (1 liang), Shigao (crushed, 2 liang).
Boil the seventeen ingredients in 8 sheng of water to reduce by half, add sap, boil to obtain 2.5 sheng. Divide into three doses, repeating after the time it takes to walk ten li. Add Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel) for Qi stagnation.
Another Powder Decoction:
Fangfeng, Duhuo, Shaoyao, Huangqin, Renshen, Xiong, Baizhu, Danshen (Salvia Root), Shuyu (Dioscorea Opposita), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Guixin, Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, core removed), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Shihu (Dendrobium Stem), Fangji, Ju Pi (3 liang), Shengjiang (2 liang, sliced), Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, 6 liang), Fuzi (prepared, 3 liang), Yuanzhi (Polygala Root, 3 liang, core removed).
Pound and sieve the thirty-three ingredients into powder. For each decoction, use 3 sheng of water and 3 liang of powder, boil to obtain 1 sheng. Filter through silk and take at once. One dose daily. If feeling heart-heat, use Zhu Li instead of water for boiling. (Qianjin Fang contains Huangqin, Binglang, Haoben, Duzhong, Xijiao; lacks Chuyuzhu, Shuyu, Gancao, Maidong, Fuzi.)
Furthermore: Wind patients often have heat; Jing Li Decoction is suitable:
Jing Li (Schizonepeta Sap), Zhu Li, Shengjiang Zhi (0.5 sheng each).
Mix and warm as one dose. Take the powder decoction in the morning, and this Jing Li in the afternoon. Maintain this regimen for care.
Fangfeng Tang for Hemiplegia (Pian Feng), prescription by Zhen Quan for Duke Anping:
Fangfeng, Baizhu, Xiong, Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Gouji (Cibotium Rhizome), Bibo (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome, 1 liang each), Yiyiren (Coix Seed), Xingren (removed tips/skins/double kernels), Renshen, Gegen, Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, 2 liang each), Mahuang (4 liang, nodes removed), Shigao (crushed, wrapped), Guixin (2 liang each), Shengjiang (5 liang, sliced).
Cut the sixteen ingredients. Boil in 12 dou of water to obtain 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. If feeling better after one dose, take another. Combine each dose with one moxibustion session. Nine doses of decoction correspond to nine moxibustion sessions. Moxa Fengchi (GB20), Jianyu (LI15), Quchi (LI11), Zhigou (TE6), Wushu (GB26), Yanglingquan (GB34), Jiuxia Lian (ST39). Seven acupoints total lead to cure. Ren Shou Gong Beishen had foot issues; moxa Huantiao (GB30), Yanglingquan (GB34), Jiuxia Lian (ST39), Yangfu (GB38) to walk. Two acupoints allowed kneeling/standing. Kudi Qin with hemiplegia could not draw a bow; moxa Jianyu (LI15) cured him. Avoid peaches, plums, raw scallions in previous formulas. (Qianjin Yi Fang notes acupuncture here, but moxibustion is used because the royal way avoids needles.)
Another Formula for All Wind Deficiency with Severe Headache:
Xingren (9 sheng, remove tips/skins/double kernels, dry).
Pound to powder. Grind in 9 sheng of water, filter like making porridge. Simmer slowly until sesame seeds float. Take one spoonful mixed with soup, porridge, or wine. Take with every meal, unlimited quantity. Profuse sweating after ten days, stops after twenty days. Avoid wind/cold, pork, fish, chicken, garlic, strong vinegar. All wind conditions reduce after one dose. In spring/summer, make less due to vinegar scarcity. Brew after September/Autumn. This method is miraculous; keep secret. (From Volume XVI, same as Qianjin Fang.)
Emergency Treatment for Impending Stroke: If suddenly feeling dizzy and tingling skin/muscles, stroke is imminent.
Urgently take Duhuo and Guixin (5 liang each). Cut and soak in 3 sheng of wine. Warm near fire. Take 0.5 sheng per dose, three times daily, increasing to 1 sheng. Avoid raw scallions. (Same as Qianjin Fang Vol II.)
Jin Xiao Yiyiren Tang for Various Winds:
Yiyiren (0.5 sheng), Weirui (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome), Shengjiang, Fushen (3 liang each), Sheng Xijiao Mo (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Powder, 2 liang), Wumei (Mume Fruit, 7 pieces), Maidong (core removed), Zhu Li (0.3 sheng each), Baimi (White Honey, 0.1 sheng).
Cut the nine ingredients. Slowly boil in 8 sheng of water to obtain 2.7 sheng of juice. Strain, mix in Zhu Li and honey. Drink slowly. No fixed limit; skipping doses is better to prevent wind attacks. Avoid rice vinegar, oils, stale/hard-to-digest foods. Use previous formula for storm-induced paralysis, slurred speech, confusion, wandering wind, limb bi-syndrome, instability, or green wind signs. Take one dose every ten days for best results. (
