Liushui Tang (Flowing Water Decoction) is indicated for deficiency-related vexation and insomnia.
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏), two liang, washed ten times; Oryza Sativa Germen (Jingmi, 粳米), one sheng; Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), four liang.
The above three herbs are cut. Using two dou of flowing water from the east, agitate it three thousand times to make it turbulent, then decoct the herbs. Obtain five sheng of liquid. Divide into doses of one sheng each, taken three times during the day and twice at night.
Avoid mutton, malt sugar, and vinegar-preserved foods. When using Pinelliae Rhizoma, Gingeris Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), four liang, must be added; otherwise, it will irritate the throat. Not knowing why the ancients prescribed it this way, I have corrected it now.
Da Wumei Tang (Large Mume Decoction) is indicated for deficiency-related vexation and restlessness leading to insomnia after erroneous purgative treatment, with severe cases presenting as mental confusion and intra-cardiac discomfort (Xin Zhong Ao Nao, 心中懊憹).
Large Fructus Mume (Wumei, 乌梅), fourteen pieces, broken open; Good quality Semen Sojae Praeparatum (Douchi, 豆豉), seven he.
The above two substances are decocted in four sheng of water. Boil the Mume until the volume reduces to two and a half sheng. Add the Douchi and boil for four or five boils. Obtain one and a half sheng of liquid. Divide into two doses.
The following are treated in Volume Four of Yao Fang:
Formulas for treating Huoluan (Vomiting and Diarrhea Syndrome);
Formulas for treating Zhong'e (Sudden Evil Invasion);
Formulas for treating Food Poisoning;
Formulas for treating Gu Poison (Gu Toxin);
Formulas for treating Hematemesis, Hematochezia, Epistaxis, and Hematuria;
Formulas for treating Jaundice complicated by Lin Syndrome (Strangury);
These six categories.
Huoluan with vomiting, diarrhea, and mental vexation is treated with Luangfa Tang (Hair Burning Decoction).
Luangfa (Burnt Human Hair), one piece, duck-egg sized, burnt until charred; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), one liang; Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), one sheng; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), one liang, roasted.
The above four herbs are cut. Decoct in three sheng of water and two sheng of wine. Obtain two sheng of liquid. Strain and discard the dregs. Take five he warm. Avoid Seaweed (Haizao, 海藻), Chinese Cabbage (Songcai, 菘菜).
For Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea, if Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) and Sishun Tang (Four Smooths Decoction) fail to resolve the condition, use Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
Zhuye (Bamboo Leaves), one handful, cut into inch-lengths; Tritici Fructus (Xiaomai, 小麦), one sheng; Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), ten liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), one liang, roasted; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), one liang; Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), one liang, processed; Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui, 肉桂), two liang; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归), two liang; Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, 芍药), one liang; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), three liang; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 橘皮), two liang.
The above eleven herbs are decocted in one and a half dou of water. First decoct the Xiaomai and Zhuye to obtain eight sheng of juice. Strain and discard dregs. Add the remaining herbs and decoct to obtain two and a half sheng. Divide into three doses. If abdominal fullness occurs after vomiting and diarrhea, add Zhi Houpo (Processed Magnolia Bark, 厚朴), two liang. If rebellious Qi rises, add Wuzhuyu, half a sheng. The condition resolves. Lizhong Tang and Sishun Tang are excessively hot; for Huoluan with heat toxin, Zhuye Tang is suitable. Avoid raw scallions, Haizao, Songcai, pork, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, etc.
Huoluan with vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, and paradoxical free urination, or passing undigested food, with no internal or external heat, faint pulse nearly imperceptible, aversion to cold, limb contracture and urgency, and cold extremities (Jue Ni, 厥逆) are treated with Sini Jia Zhu Dan Tang (Cooling Extremities Decoction plus Pig Bile).
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), two liang, roasted; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), half a liang, processed; Aconiti Radix (Fuzi, 附子), one piece, raw, skin removed, broken into eight pieces; Porcis Bile (Zhudanshui, 猪胆汁), half a he.
The above four herbs are cut. Decoct in two sheng of water to obtain one and four-tenths sheng. Take warm, divided into two doses. If pig bile is unavailable, sheep bile may substitute. For robust individuals, use one large Fuzi and increase Ganjiang to three liang. If shortness of breath follows vomiting, or abdominal fullness follows purging, add Ren Shen, one liang, and reduce all other herbs to one liang. For such syndromes, Li Jue Renshen Tang (Regulate Cold Ginseng Decoction) is also appropriate. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, pork.
Sishun Tang (Four Smooths Decoction) is used similarly to previous treatments and is commonly employed.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), three liang (another version: two liang); Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), three liang (another version: one liang); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), three liang (another version: one liang, roasted); Aconiti Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), two liang (Fan Wang Fang uses one liang).
The above four herbs are cut. Decoct in six sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Strain and discard dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. It is effective for muscle cramps, cold limbs, sweating, vomiting, and hiccups. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, pork. Fan Wang Fang states: for severe diarrhea, add Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 龙骨), two liang, roasted.
Bai Wan (White Pills) is an excellent formula for Huoluan with vomiting and acute diarrhea.
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏), three liang, washed; Aconiti Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), four liang, processed; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), four liang, processed; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), three liang; Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗), two liang.
The above five herbs are made into powder. Mix appropriately when treating the patient. If vomiting and diarrhea persist, mix with Cujiu (Vinegar, 苦酒) and take two pills the size of wutong seeds. If ineffective, take again. Adjust dosage according to tolerance. For predominant diarrhea, honey can be used to form pills. Avoid pork, mutton, malt sugar.
Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) treats Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea, abdominal fullness, indigestion, and heart/abdominal pain.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), three liang; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), three liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), three liang, roasted; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), three liang.
The above four herbs are decocted in six sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Strain and discard dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. If ineffective, administer frequently, two or three courses. For long-distance travel prevention of Huoluan, make pills the size of wutong seeds, taking twenty per dose. Powder dose is one fangcun bi (square-inch spoonful). Taking with wine is also acceptable. If muscle cramps occur, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏), three liang. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, etc.
To treat sudden heart/abdominal pain, retained food not digesting, or old cold causing vexation and fullness leading to Huoluan:
Prepare three sheng of extremely salty salt soup. Drink one or two sheng while hot to induce vomiting, ensuring retained food is expelled. If vomiting does not occur, drink again. After vomiting, drink again. Three inductions are ideal. Stop only when empty. This method surpasses various decoctions and pills.
Formula for Huoluan with abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea:
Take peach leaves; in winter, use the bark. Juice them. Take one cup per dose. Cure immediately. Alternatively, decoct strongly and drink three sheng.
For Huoluan with abdominal pain, fullness, shortness of breath, inability to vomit or purge, where moxibustion is ineffective, due to heat hiding in the heart causing vexation and depression:
Take rice flour, mix with water to form a thin gruel. Drink about one sheng at once. If vomiting occurs, cure. If not, induce vomiting via stimulation. If vomiting never occurs, the condition is critical. If flour is unavailable, break Sorghum (Shumi, 秫米) to extract juice.
Formula for Huoluan with profuse diarrhea and abdominal pain:
Take one handful of Artemisia Argyi (Aiye, 艾), decoct in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng. Drink at once for good effect.
When Huoluan presents with pulsation above the umbilicus, it indicates Kidney Qi movement. Treat the Qi first using Lizhong Tang removing Baizhu and adding Rougui (Cinnamon Twig/Bark, 桂). Adding Baizhu addresses internal deficiency; adding Rougui prevents Ben Tun (Running Piglet Syndrome, 奔豚). Lizhong Tang composition:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), three liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), three liang, roasted; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), three liang; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), three liang, processed.
The above four herbs are cut. Decoct in eight sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Strain and discard dregs. Take one sheng warm, three times daily and once at night. If pulsation above the umbilicus (Kidney Qi movement), remove Baizhu and add Rou Xin (Cinnamon Heart, 桂心), four liang. For excessive vomiting, remove Baizhu and add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 生姜), three liang. For excessive diarrhea, reuse Baizhu. For palpitations, add Fuling (Poria, 茯苓), two liang. If thirsty and desiring water prior to illness, add Baizhu to total four and a half liang. If abdominal pain, add Ren Shen to total four and a half liang. If aversion to cold, add Ganjiang to total four and a half liang. If abdominal fullness, remove Baizhu and add Fuzi (Aconite Root, 附子), one piece, processed, skin removed, broken into six pieces. One meal period after taking the decoction, drink about one sheng of hot porridge. Mild sweating indicates self-warming. Do not uncover clothes or blankets. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, etc.
Pulsation above the umbilicus in Huoluan is due to excessive vomiting. For excessive vomiting, Lizhong Tang is primary, with modifications as described. For Huoluan with Jue Ni (Cold Extremities), less vomiting but more hiccups, Fuzi Jingmi Tang (Aconite and Rice Decoction) is indicated.
Aconiti Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), one piece, processed, skin removed, broken into six pieces; Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏), half a sheng, washed, used whole; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), one liang, roasted; Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus (Dazao, 大枣), ten pieces, broken open; Oryza Sativa Germen (Jingmi, 粳米), half a sheng.
The above five herbs are cut. Decoct in eight sheng of water until rice is cooked. Strain and discard dregs. Take one sheng warm, three times daily. Avoid mutton, pork, Haizao, Songcai, malt sugar.
For sudden uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea in Huoluan with rapid pulse, Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) is indicated.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), two liang; Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), two liang; Puerariae Radix (Gegen, 葛根), two liang; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 橘皮), two liang; Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mendong, 麦门冬), two liang, heart removed; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), two liang, roasted.
The above six herbs are cut. Decoct in five sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Strain and discard dregs. Take warm, divided into three doses. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, vinegar products.
Fulao Lizhong San (Support-Elder Regulate-Middle Powder), which can also be made into pills for long-term use, treats emaciated elderly patients with cold qi, nausea, indigestion, abdominal deficiency-fullness, contracture, shortness of breath, Huoluan with vomiting/reversal, cold extremities, vexation, chest oppression, and sweating.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), five liang; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 干姜), six liang; Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术), five liang; Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mendong, 麦门冬), six liang, heart removed; Aconiti Radix Preparata (Fuzi, 附子), three liang, processed; Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), three liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草), five liang, roasted.
The above seven herbs are made into powder. When treating, decoct to obtain three he. Mix one fangcun bi with plain water and drink. If one dose is ineffective, take another. Usually prepared as honey pills taken with wine, twenty pills the size of wutong seeds. Avoid Haizao, Songcai, pork, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, strong vinegar.
For dry retching, reversal, hiccups, and cold extremities, Chenpi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction) is indicated.
Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 橘皮), four liang; Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 生姜), half a jin.
The above two herbs are decocted in seven sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Take one sheng per dose. Cure upon swallowing.

The above eight herbs are decocted together in four sheng of water and four sheng of clear wine to obtain three sheng. Divide into four doses.
For Huoluan with desire to drink but immediate dry retching upon drinking:

It also treats post-epidemic heat disease where toxins remain, Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea causes persistent fever/vexation, and chest/heart feels like bursting.
