(Same for diarrhea and dysentery)
*Chushi Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases in Children), Prognosis of Prolonged Diarrhea in Children: Wind pathogen injuring the body in spring leads to "Dongxie" (profuse, watery diarrhea with urgent flow) in summer. When children dress lightly in spring, they are injured by wind; the pathogen hides in the muscles. By summer, it triggers diarrhea involving undigested food and water. If this persists for a long time without healing, it becomes chronic. Generally, prolonged diarrhea involving undigested food weakens the intestines and stomach, making them susceptible to cold and heat pathogens. Exposure to cold transforms stool into white pus; exposure to heat transforms it into red blood. If cold and heat combine, red and white mix. Prolonged diarrhea can lead to swelling and distension, may transform into "Gan" syndrome (malnutrition/parasitic disease), and causes vomiting and hiccups, all due to spleen and stomach deficiency caused by prolonged diarrhea.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang*: The so-called chronic red-white dysentery in children is caused by imbalance of cold and heat. Heat attacks the blood, causing blood to seep into the intestines, mixing with cold qi and fluids to be discharged. In severe cases, the intestine becomes empty and fails to recover, resulting in continuous red-white discharge that does not heal for a long time.
*Fengsui Jing*, Song on Slippery Intestine Diarrhea: (Suitable to be combined with Xianglian Wan and Zishuang Wan formulas, which are also identical to those in *Jishi Jiazhuang*. See "Cold-Heat Dysentery" section for Xianglian Wan formula, and "Abdominal Pain and Dysentery" section for Zishuang Wan formula.)
Accumulated heat in the spleen lingers, causing year-round unceasing diarrhea. The neck becomes soft, gasping occurs when seeing many people, and clear fluid flows from the nose. Occasionally, stool resembles gold color. If rectal prolapse occurs and cannot be retracted, observe the chest and diaphragm area. Deep redness on the chest and sweating like oil indicate difficult treatment. Red veins on the eyes are hard to manage. Red lips with ulcers signal impending death. Generally, regulating the spleen stabilizes diarrhea; ancient physicians used medication following natural principles.
