Zhang Huan discusses: Among the five zang organs, the lung is the most tender and weak; if it suffers from disease, it is difficult to treat. This is because children's qi and blood are not yet solid. If they dress thinly and do not fear cold, wind-cold pathogens invade the skin and hair, and follow the qi into the lung meridian, causing cough. Generally, children should keep their backs warm; even in summer when wearing vests or similar garments, caution must be exercised. The Lung Shu (BL13) acupoint is located on the back. If cough persists for a long time, it damages true qi and may generate convulsions. For instance, if an infant under one hundred days old develops cough, only one or two out of ten recover, indicating it is no minor illness. If there is phlegm-fluid above the diaphragm, treatment should be administered according to the syndrome.
*Ying Tong Bao Jian* records: Children's cough is caused by exogenous wind invading the lungs, generating phlegm-cough.
The Song of Cough due to Wind Pathogen from *Yu Jue* states:
Cough arises from wind pathogen causing cold in the lungs, while latent heat in the San Jiao transforms into phlegm-fluid. Cold stomach leads to frequent vomiting of deficiency-phlegm through cough; frequent fever accompanies continuous wheezing.
For children with phlegm-cough generating saliva, first administer drugs to descend phlegm, then harmonize stomach qi, and finally treat the cough disease.
