Formulas also have their ancestral origins. Since Yi Yin created decoctions, the lineage has been passed down continuously,无异 (no different from) the transmission of the Dharma lamp in Buddhism. If one can trace back to this source, naturally the mind and hand will coordinate perfectly, adhering to the correct principles. This is indeed beyond the comprehension of contemporary mediocre physicians.
Treating wind pathogen injuring the Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), presenting with floating and slow pulse, fever, and spontaneous sweating, indicating disharmony between Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive).
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, 3 qian), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 3 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 2 qian), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 5 slices), Dazao (Fructus Jujubae, 4 pieces, split).
Take the above five herbs, decoct in water, and take warm. After ingestion, drink a bowl of hot thin porridge to assist the medicinal power. Cover with blankets to induce slight sweating for efficacy. If no sweat occurs, administer again after a short while.
Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth, presenting with alternating chills and fever, abdominal pain.
Based on Guizhi Tang, double the dosage of Shaoyao, add Yitang (Malt Sugar, 3 qian).
Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Construct the Middle Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating deficiency consumption complicated by cold invasion, presenting with fever and spontaneous sweating.
Based on Guizhi Tang, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 1.5 qian), Yitang (Malt Sugar, 1 he). *Qianjin Fang* often adds Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 2 qian). Guizhi Tang harmonizes Ying and Wei. Doubling Shaoyao and adding Yitang establishes Middle Qi. The sourness of Shaoyao astringes and protects Ying Blood; the sweetness of Yitang nourishes Middle Earth. Adding Huangqi solidifies Wei Qi, harmonizing Ying, Wei, and Zang-Fu, thereby yielding great benefit. *Qianjin Fang* adds Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) to Xiao Jianzhong Tang, naming it Neibu Jianzhong Tang, demonstrating its power to harmonize interior and exterior.
Yangdan Tang (Sunrise Dawn Decoction, from *Qianjin Fang*): Treating Winter-Warmth disease, presenting with floating pulse, fever, stiff neck, and headache.
Based on Guizhi Tang, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1.5 qian).
Yindan Tang (Yin Sunrise Dawn Decoction, from *Qianjin Fang*): Treating Winter-Warmth with internal cold and external heat, joint pain, complicated by cold-food stagnation.
Based on Guizhi Tang, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1.5 qian), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, 0.5 fen). When yin pathogens block all directions, only the qi of dawn can open up yang harmony. Guizhi Tang was originally named Yangdan Tang, a formula to open up yang pathogens. *Qianjin Fang* adds Huangqin, whose bitter-cold nature is mild, to treat exterior heat pathogens of Winter-Warmth, retaining the name Yangdan. If complicated by cold-food stagnation, add Ganjiang, pungent-warm to scatter nodules, treating middle-earth stagnation, thus named Yindan. This has nothing to do with the yin-yang of meridians.
Qianjin Duhuo Tang: Treating sudden stroke with loss of consciousness, throat obstruction preventing speech, flaccid limbs, and dragging extremities.
Replace Guizhi in Guizhi Tang with Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), remove Dazao, add Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis), and Shengge (Radix Puerariae Lobatae) to induce sweating. If no sweat, remove Duhuo, Gualougen, Shengjiang, and add Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae). Treats aphasia as well.
Danggui Sini Tang (Angelica Four Reversals Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating yang pathogen invading Jueyin, presenting with cold reversals of the four limbs.
Remove Shengjiang from Guizhi Tang, add Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian), Xixin (Herba Asari, 1 qian), Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis, 1 qian). Pathogens invading Jueyin enter but do not exit. Even with heat pathogens, they must transform through yin before causing reversals. Thus, the Jueyin chapter cites "deep reversal implies deep heat" to warn of transmission changes. At this stage, pathogens are most urgent. A physician without mature insight would be at a loss. Master Zhang Zhongjing did not fear reversals, retaining Guizhi Tang from Taiyang protocols. He added Danggui to assist Shaoyao in protecting Jueyin Ying; Xinyin guides Guizhi as a guide for Jueyin; Tongchai unblocks Bladder to provide an outlet for Jueyin, sharing strength with Guizhi to rapidly resolve pathogens. Although Jueyin and Taiyang border each other, once pathogens enter yin, they do not return to yang. The notion of six-meridian transmission continuing indefinitely is laughable. Ginger is removed because its pungent-hot nature is violent; it might disperse via Taiyang before reaching yin, weakening Wei Qi, leaving no force to drive out pathogens. Extending this logic to Qinglong and Chaihu formulas, ginger and jujube are fixed methods for harmonizing Ying/Wei and resolving half-exterior/half-interior pathogens. Mahuang Tang treats cold injuring Ying and does not use ginger. In treating Three Yin diseases, ginger is rarely used. If ginger is used so cautiously, how much more caution is needed regarding "deep reversal implies deep heat"? Blindly using Jiang (Ginger), Fu (Aconite), and Sini Tang for cold limbs causes great sorrow.
Neibu Danggui Jianzhong Tang (Interior-Nourishing Angelica Construct the Middle Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating postpartum blood deficiency, emaciation, abdominal stabbing pain, lower abdominal urgency, or cold-induced fever.
Replace Guizhi with Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), add Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 2 qian), Yitang (Malt Sugar, 6 qian). For metrorrhagia or epistaxis that won't stop, add Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 6 qian), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 2 qian). Take 4-5 doses postpartum to strengthen the body.
Guizhi Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig with Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating deficiency consumption with nocturnal emission, aversion to cold, and fever.
Add Longgu (Os Draconis et Mammutis, crushed, 1.5 qian), Muli (Concha Ostreae, calcined, 1.5 qian) to Guizhi Tang.
Guizhi Dahuang Tang (Cinnamon Twig with Rhubarb Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Taiyang wind strike mismanaged with purgatives, leading pathogens inward, causing abdominal fullness and pain.
Add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 qian) to Guizhi Tang. Guizhi Tang is an exterior-resolving formula. Misuse of purgatives drew pathogens inward, causing fullness/pain due to unresolved exterior pathogens. Thus, retain Guizhi Tang, slightly adding Dahuang to guide pathogens out according to their trend. As the disease changes, the formula must change accordingly.
Guizhi Gegen Tang (Cinnamon Twig with Kudzu Root Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Taiyang soft spasm, presenting with spontaneous sweating and floating pulse.
Add Gegen (Radix Puerariae Lobatae, 2 qian) to Guizhi Tang.
Gualou Guizhi Tang (Trichosanthes Cinnamon Twig Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating spasm with complete Taiyang symptoms, rigid body, and deep-slow pulse.
Add Gualougen (Radix Trichosanthis, 2 qian) to Guizhi Tang.
Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig with Aconite Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Yang collapse with wind leakage, limb stiffness and difficulty in flexion/extension.
Add Shufuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 qian) to Guizhi Tang.
Guizhi Huangqi Tang (Cinnamon Twig with Astragalus Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating Yellow Sweat with fever, cold calves, sweating above waist, no sweat below.
Add Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 2 qian) to Guizhi Tang.
Shaogui Jiu Tang (Paeonia and Cinnamon Wine Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating sweat like cypress juice, limb swelling, fever, sweating, and thirst.
Remove Gancao, Shengjiang, Dazao from Guizhi Tang, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 5 qian), decoct with Kujiu (Vinegar) and water.
Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang (Astragalus Cinnamon Twig Five Substance Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating Blood Bi, numbness of the body resembling wind strike.
Remove Gancao from Guizhi Tang, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali) in equal parts. *Qianjin Fang* replaces Guizhi with Guixin and adds Renshen, naming it Huangqi Tang.
Fuling Gancao Tang (Poria Cinnamon Twig Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating wind pathogen invading Bladder Qi division, causing difficult urination.
Remove Shaoyao, Dazao from Guizhi Tang, add Fuling (Poria, 2 qian).
Linggui Zhugan Tang (Poria Cinnamon Twig Atractylodes Licorice Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating fluid retention under the heart, chest/abdominal distension, dizziness.
Remove Shaoyao, Shengjiang, Dazao from Guizhi Tang, add Fuling (Poria, 2 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 1 qian). This uses half of Guizhi Tang to move fluid retention in interior/exterior, and half of Sizijunzi Tang to circulate phlegm-qi inside.
Qianjin Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Zaojiao Tang (Cinnamon Twig Without Paeonia Plus Soap Pod Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating Lung Abscess with salivation, early stage with exterior pathogens.
Remove Shaoyao from Guizhi Tang, add Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, 1 piece, skin/kernel removed, roasted with butter).
Guizhi Qu Shaoyao Jia Mahuang Fuxi Xin Tang (Cinnamon Twig Without Paeonia Plus Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating Qi division disease, sensation of a plate under the heart.
Remove Shaoyao from Guizhi Tang, add Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 qian), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 qian), Xixin (Herba Asari, 0.5 qian). Disease in Qi division requires Mahuang/Guizhi to resolve; knotted qi requires Xixin/Fuzi to break nodules. Shaoyao is removed due to its astringent nature.
Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Overflowing Drink with wheezing/cough, diarrhea, fever, requiring sweating.
Remove Shengjiang, Dazao from Guizhi Tang, add Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 3 qian), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, 2 qian), Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, 0.5 qian), Xixin (Herba Asari, 0.5 qian), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, 0.5 qian).
Xiao Qinglong Jia Shigao Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Plus Gypsum Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating wheezing/cough with upward qi, irritability, fluid retention under the heart.
Add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, size of a chicken egg, crushed) to Xiao Qinglong Tang.
Guizhi Mahuang Ge Ban Tang (Half-Half Cinnamon Twig and Ephedra Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Taiyang syndrome with faint pulse and aversion to cold.
Add Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Xingren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae) to Guizhi Tang.
Guizhi Er Yuebi Yi Tang (Two Parts Cinnamon Twig One Part Yuebi Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating injury to both Ying and Wei, more wind than cold, with irritability and fullness.
Take Guizhi Tang base ingredients (2 qian each), add Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 2 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian).
Guizhi Shaoyao Zhimu Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Paeonia, and Anemarrhena Decoction, from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*): Treating joint pain, swollen feet as if detached.
Remove Dazao from Guizhi Tang, add Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 2 qian), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 0.5 liang), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 4 qian), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 4 qian), Shufuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 2 qian).
Zhigancao Tang (Honey-Fried Licorice Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Taiyang disease with knotted/intermittent pulse and palpitations, Lung萎 (Flaccidity) with excessive saliva, inner warmth/liquid sensation, deficiency consumption, sweating with stuffiness.
Remove Shaoyao from Guizhi Tang, double Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), add Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 2 qian), Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae, 3 qian), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 2 qian), Maziren (Semen Cannabis, 1 qian), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, 2 qian). These are moistening and tonifying herbs. Only Guizhi moves meridian stasis; Maziren moistens intestinal dryness. With deficient/knotted pulse and palpitations from deficiency consumption, nourishment restores pulse calmness and stops palpitations.
Shaoyao Gancao Tang (Paeonia and Licorice Decoction, from *Yufang Jing*): Treating Ying blood injury with persistent heat.
Remove Guizhi, Shengjiang, Dazao from Guizhi Tang.
Shaoyao Gancao Fuzi Tang (Paeonia, Licorice, and Aconite Decoction): Treating unresolved disease after sweating, worsening aversion to cold, or spasm induced by sweating in wound patients.
Remove Guizhi, Shengjiang, Dazao from Guizhi Tang, add Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, 1 qian, processed).
Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction, *Yufang Jing* also known as Huangqin Shaoyao Tang): Treating latent qi inducing Warmth, Taiyang-Shaoyang combined disease with diarrhea.
Remove Guizhi, Shengjiang from Guizhi Tang, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 qian).
Huangqin Jia Banxia Tang (Scutellaria Plus Pinellia Decoction, *Yufang Jing/Jin Gui* also known as Huangqin Jia Banxia Shengjiang Tang): Treating latent qi inducing Warmth, complicated by phlegm-fluid, fullness, cough, and counterflow qi.
Remove Guizhi from Guizhi Tang, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 3 qian), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata, 2 qian). Huangqin Tang treats Spring-Summer Warmth with internal heat generation. Removing pungent-warm Guizhi/Shengjiang and replacing with bitter-dry Huangqin transforms warming-dispersion into cooling-resolution, a masterful application. Later generations use it for diarrhea with fever, staying within these principles. Huangqin Jia Banxia Tang treats diarrhea with vomiting, matching summer-autumn dysentery with white mucus. Different diseases, same treatment, always adhering to Zhang Zhongjing's standards.
