Treats cold pathogen damaging Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi). Pulse is floating, fever, no sweating with wheezing, pain in bone joints.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (remove nodes, 3 qian), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, 桂枝) (3 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (roasted, 1 qian), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) (20 seeds, soaked, remove skin and tips, crushed).
The above four ingredients, decoct in water, take warm. Cover with warm blankets to induce slight sweating. No need to drink hot porridge. Because the cold pathogen enters and damages Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), which originates from the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner); there is fear that the Qi of grains might instead assist the pathogenic heat.
Mahuang Jia Zhu Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats patients with dampness experiencing bodily restlessness and pain, with fever in the afternoon (Shi hour).
It is Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) plus Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 4 qian. The bodily pain and restless heat in dampness patients are entirely due to injury of the body shell (exterior). At this time, use Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to open the muscle layer and exterior. If Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) is not used to strengthen and transport Spleen Qi, although damp-heat will be excreted via sweat, the Qi of water and grain will still transform into phlegm-dampness, flowing between the interior and exterior. However, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) must be used raw; if roasted or baked, it only has the function of strengthening the Spleen but lacks the power to dispel dampness.
Gujin Lu Yan Jupi Tang (Orange Peel Decoction Verified Through Ages) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats cold pathogen injuring the Lung, causing cough and hemoptysis (spitting blood).
Replace Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) in Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) with Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), and add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ziwan (Asternis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
Mahuang Xinggan Shigao Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Licorice, and Gypsum Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats cases after sweating where there is sweating with wheezing and no significant heat.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) half liang. This is Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) without Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), incorporating the intent of Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction), specifically to dispel damp-heat and phlegm-Qi in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner). It corresponds with Linggui Zhugan Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Atractylodes, and Licorice Decoction); the latter relies on Fuling (Poria) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to specifically dispel fluid retention under the heart; this formula relies on Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to specifically dispel damp-heat above the diaphragm.
Mahuang Xingyi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Coix Seed, and Licorice Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats wind-dampness causing whole-body pain and fever, worsening in the afternoon (Shi hour).
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), add Yiyi Ren (Coicis Semen) half liang.
Xingzi Tang (Apricot Kernel Decoction) Treats Fengshui (Wind-Water edema) causing empty distension with a floating pulse; inducing sweat cures it.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). (Another simple Xingzi Tang uses Xiao Qinglong Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) plus Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Xingziren (Apricot Kernel)).
Gancao Mahuang Tang (Licorice and Ephedra Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Also treats Li Shui (Interior Water).
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). The formula uses Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 qian and Mahuang (Ephedra) 4 qian.
Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats Taiyang-Yangming combined disease presenting with spontaneous diarrhea, or fever without sweat, wheezing, chest fullness, and anorexia.
Remove Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), increase Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) by 1 qian, add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 4 qian, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 2 qian, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 3 pieces. This is the combination of Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), removing only Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) and adding Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), serving as a specific medicine for Yangming Meridian syndromes. Because it assists Mahuang (Ephedra) to vigorously open the muscles and flesh. Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) is removed because, having opened the muscles externally, one should not again drain Lung Qi internally. The Sages' legislation, every formula and ingredient, is carefully considered. Without deliberate study, how can one discern its subtleties to serve as the life-giver for the people?
San'ao Tang (Three Un-twisted Decoction) (from *Ju Fang* / *Bureau Formulary*) Treats cough caused by Wind-Cold injuring the Lung; mistaken use of astringent Lung herbs leads to Qi stagnation, cough, and urgent wheezing.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). Use Mahuang (Ephedra) (do not remove nodes), Gancao (Licorice Root) (raw), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (with skin and tips) in equal parts. Add more Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), named Jiawei San'ao Tang (Modified Three Un-twisted Decoction).
Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats Shaoyin disease with deep pulse and fever, as well as edema, wheezing, and cough.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Gancao (Licorice Root) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 1 qian, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) half qian.
Qianjin Fuzi San (Thousand Gold Aconite Powder) Treats stroke causing arm numbness and anesthesia, and facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eye).
Add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) to Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction). Grind into powder, decoct in water, add Zhuli (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia). Take one dose daily for efficacy.
Canggong Danggui Tang (Master Cang's Angelica Decoction) Treats Zefeng (Robber Wind) causing lockjaw, opisthotonos, and spasm.
Add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) to Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction). Decoct with water and wine. For those whose mouths cannot open, instill the decoction through the teeth. One dose should restore consciousness; two doses cause slight sweating; three doses cause profuse sweating.
Mahuang Fuzi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*, named Mahuang Fuzi Tang in *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats Shaoyin disease with deep pulse and fever, occurring after two or three days without Interior syndrome, as well as edema with deep pulse.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 1 qian.
Qianjin Dazao Tang (Thousand Gold Jujube Decoction) Treats Lijie (Joint-striding) pain.
Use Mahuang Fuzi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction), add Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Jiang (Ginger), and Zao (Jujube). Take three times daily to induce sweating. Among heavy exterior-releasing agents, none surpass Mahuang (Ephedra); among harsh meridian-warming drugs, Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) ranks first. The functions of exterior/interior tonification and purgation differ vastly like heaven and earth. Zhang Zhongjing, when treating Shaoyin disease with deep pulse and fever, combines these two herbs to pierce strong fortresses directly, achieving the merit of mending heaven and bathing the sun. If within one or two days, the situation is unpredictable, use Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) to aid its sharpness; if after two or three days there is no Interior syndrome, use Gancao (Licorice Root) to moderate its treatment. Each has its measure. *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet* also uses these two formulas in treating edema. With wheezing and cough, combine Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) to open Lung Qi obstruction; with deep pulse, combine Gancao (Licorice Root) to moderate rebellious Kidney Qi. This corresponds with preventing transformation at onset and the "no Interior syndrome after two or three days" principle. Meanwhile, Master Cang added Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) to Mahuang Fuzi Xixin Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Asarum Decoction) to treat Zefeng (Robber Wind) lockjaw and spasms; Qianjin Formula further added Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Jiang (Ginger), and Zao (Jujube) to Mahuang Fuzi Gancao Tang (Ephedra, Aconite, and Licorice Decoction) to treat Lijie (Joint-striding) pain. All rely on Mahuang (Ephedra) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) to penetrate both exterior and interior, swiftly sweeping away pathogens. Like the bright sun shining high, how could there be yin mist disasters?
Mahuang Shengma Tang (Ephedra and Cyathula Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats Dongwen (Winter Warmth) mistakenly treated with sweating and purging, resulting in absent lower pulse, throat discomfort, and expectoration of pus and blood.
Remove Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). Use Mahuang (Ephedra) 2 qian, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Gancao (Licorice Root) each 8 fen, add Shengma (Cyathulae Radix) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) each 1 qian, Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) each 2 qian, Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria), and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) each 8 fen. This formula specifically addresses Yang-Heat sinking into Jueyin, with meridians obstructed by pathogens, hence the absent lower pulse and symptoms of throat discomfort and expectoration of pus and blood. Pathogens obstructing meridians require the restraint of Mahuang (Ephedra) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) to open the muscle layer and vent external heat; it requires the methods of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) and Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction) to clear and moisten Lung and Stomach to resolve internal heat. Furthermore, Shaoyao Gancao Renshen Huangqin Tang (Peony, Licorice, Ginseng, and Scutellaria Decoction) uses "treating cold with cold" (Han Yin Han Yong), called responding to the enemy; Gancao Ganjiang He Shen Zhuo Tang (Licorice, Ginger, and Shen Zhuo Decoction) uses "treating heat with heat" (Re Yin Re Yong), called guiding the way. Because the pathogenic qi is complex, reverse and direct treatments must be combined.
Huagai San (Canopy Powder) (from *Ju Fang* / *Bureau Formulary*) Treats Lung affected by Wind-Cold, causing cough with heavy voice, restlessness, fullness, dizziness, and floating-rapid pulse.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). Use Mahuang (Ephedra) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) each 1 qian, Gancao (Licorice Root) 5 fen, add Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Chi Fuling (Red Poria), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Sanggenpi (Mori Cortex) each 1 qian, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 2 slices, Hongzao (Red Jujube) 1 piece.
Jiubao Tang (Nine Treasures Decoction) Treats chronic cough persisting for years, with floating pulse indicating external contraction.
Add Zisu (Perillae Folium), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium) in equal parts to Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction). Add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh) half piece.
Mahuang Lianyao Chixiaodou Tang (Ephedra, Forsythia, and Adzuki Bean Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats yellowing caused by damp-heat.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), reduce Mahuang (Ephedra) by 1 qian, add Lianyao (Forsythiae Fructus, i.e., Lianqiao) 2 qian, Chixiaodou (Vigna Angularis Semen Rubrum) 1 he, Shengzipibai (Morus Alba White Bark) 1 liang, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 4 pieces. Decoct in water, divide into three warm doses, finish within half a day.
Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats Fengshui (Wind-Water) with aversion to cold, whole-body swelling, floating pulse without thirst, continuous spontaneous sweating, and no significant heat.
Remove Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) from Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction), double Mahuang (Ephedra), add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 8 qian, Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 3 slices, Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) 5 pieces. Decoct in water, divide into three warm doses. "Yuespi" means venting the pathogenic Qi of damp-earth. Water-damp Qi, disseminated internally and externally by wind, struggles mutually, making separation difficult; thus, one must rely on Mahuang (Ephedra) to vent it from the exterior, and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to clear it from the interior. This is the "Open Ghost Gate" method from the *Neijing*. Adding Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to this formula aids opening pores for profuse sweating. Adding Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) to the formula with Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) treats foot bi (painful obstruction) and aversion to wind. Opening contains closing; it fits the pattern effortlessly. Da Qinglong Tang (Major Green Dragon Decoction), Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction), and Mahxing Ganshi Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Licorice, and Gypsum Decoction) either add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) to harmonize Ying (Nutritive) Qi, or add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to boost Qi, or add Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) to drain fullness. All take this formula as the pivot. One may ask: If there is no significant heat on the exterior, why lightly use Mahuang (Ephedra)? If there is no internal restlessness and thirst, why lightly use Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum)? It is because aversion to cold, body swelling, and spontaneous sweating are all due to dampness stagnating and adhering; without wind to disperse it, it cannot be resolved. In formulas for cold damaging Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), Mahuang (Ephedra) is the direct treatment; in categories for opening bi (obstruction) and dampness, it is the guiding agent. In Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) is the direct treatment; in Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction), Qinglong Tang (Green Dragon Decoction), and Xuming Tang (Continuation of Life Decoction), it is the guiding agent. Do not let one hinder the other.
Yuespi Jia Zhu Tang (Goat Beard Decoction plus Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats extreme internal heat causing depletion of body fluids, opening of pores, profuse sweating, contracting severe wind pathogen, weakness in lower limbs.
Add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 4 qian to Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction).
Yuespi Jia Zhu Fu Tang (Goat Beard Decoction plus Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma and Aconite) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats foot bi (painful obstruction) and aversion to wind.
Add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 4 qian and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 1 qian to Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction).
Yuespi Jia Banxia Tang (Goat Beard Decoction plus Pinellia) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats Lung distension with cough and rebellious Qi.
Add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) half liang to Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction).
Da Qinglong Tang (Major Green Dragon Decoction) (from *Yu Han Jing* / *Jade Chamber Classic*) Treats simultaneous injury of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, floating-tight pulse, inability to sweat with irritability.
Add Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) 14 seeds (remove skin and tips) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 2 qian to Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction).
Wenge Tang (Clam Shell Decoction) (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* / *Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet*) Treats incessant thirst and drinking after vomiting, tight pulse, and headache.
Reduce Mahuang (Ephedra) in Yuespi Tang (Goat Beard Decoction) by half, add Wen Ge (Meretricis Concha) half liang, Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) 15 seeds.
