Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried with wine), Lizhihe (Litchi Semen, roasted until charred), each in equal parts.
Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina).
These herbs belong to the warm category. (Li Dongyuan) Treats epigastric deficiency-type fullness (Xia Xin Xu Pi), aversion to food, lethargy, and a wiry pulse at the right Guan position. (Spleen deficiency fails to transport, hence fullness and aversion to food; the Spleen governs the four limbs, so Spleen deficiency leads to lethargy. The right Guan position corresponds to the Spleen; a wiry pulse indicates Spleen deficiency with Liver Wood overacting on it. The Classics state: "What arrives from Taiyin manifests as accumulation of fluids and obstruction/fullness," all belonging to Yang syndromes. The affected organs are the Heart and the Spleen. Thus, depression and blockage leading to Pi syndrome are due to Fire and Dampness. The Heart is Yang Fire, governing Blood; the Spleen is Yin Earth, governing Dampness. If its Yang is injured, Fire becomes constrained and Blood coagulates; if its Yin is injured, Earth becomes obstructed and Dampness gathers. Although the division of Yin and Yang differs, the principles of treatment remain the same.)
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, bran-fried), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizome, stir-fried with ginger juice, 5 qian), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, stir-fried with ginger, 4 qian), Banxiaqu (Pinelliae Fermentum), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soil-fried).
Zhishi is bitter and sour, promoting Qi movement and breaking blood stasis. Huanglian is bitter and cold, clearing heat and relieving depression, serving as the Sovereign herb for eliminating Pi (fullness/obstruction). Houpo is bitter and descending, dispersing Dampness-induced fullness and transforming food stagnation.
Furthermore, these are used to consolidate the root, ensuring the True Qi is not damaged. (Yuji Wei Yi states: This is an alteration of Banxia Xiexin Tang. It contains the effects of Zhiju Wan, Sijunzi Tang, Pingwei San, etc., and is a formula that promotes diuresis, eliminates Pi, and tonifies deficiency.)
Treats Sanjiao (Triple Burner) congestion and stagnation, chest and diaphragm distension, unclear air pathways, and difficult urination. In individuals whose age and vitality have not yet declined, presenting with generalized edema or isolated abdominal distension, excess patterns rather than Water retention, etc.
Zhiqiao (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, 2 qian), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 1.5 qian), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium, 1-2 qian), Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen, 7 fen or 1-2 qian), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 qian), Fuling (Poria, 3 qian), Yichen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 2 qian). Decoct in water and take after meals.
If there is lower abdominal distension and pain, add Wuyao (Linderae Radix) and Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma).
