Treats stroke with excessive phlegm, in patients who are obese and have no thirst.
Danxing (Arisaema cum Bile, 8 qian) Muxiang (Costi Rhizome, 2 qian) Ground into powder for oral administration, or add Quanxie (Whole Scorpion).
Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Glareola) is a drying agent for resolving phlegm; processed with ox bile to reduce its toxicity. Moreover, Dan (Ox Gallbladder) has the function of benefiting the Liver and Gallbladder. (The meridians of the Liver and Gallbladder belong to Wind-Wood.) Assisted by Muxiang (Costi Rhizome),
to treat Liver Wind [internal stirring of wind].

Treats wind-epilepsy with confusion and obstruction, with tidal phlegm and convulsions. (Caused by contracting Wind, Summerheat, or Dampness, or contracting Wind-Cold, or irregular diet leading to rebellion of Zang-Qi, stagnation generating phlegm, blocking the meridians, resulting in Jue [reversal] syndrome. It may occur once every few days, or several times a day. Upon onset, there is dizziness and falling, unconsciousness, convulsions, strabismus, or sounds resembling six domestic animals depending on the affected Zang-Qi.)
Danxing (Arisaema cum Bile) Quanxie (Whole Scorpion, feet removed and roasted) Chantui (Cicada Slough, 2.5 qian) Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, washed and roasted) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, 1.5 qian)
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) clears Heat from the Heart, opens the orifices, and benefits phlegm resolution. Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Nanxing (Arisaema Cum Glareola), and Quanxie (Whole Scorpion) are pungent and dispersing agents. Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) and Chantui (Cicada Slough) are clearing and transforming agents. Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma)
targets the head and face.
Expels Wind.
Shexiang (Moschus) and Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis)
eliminate Phlegm-Heat, moisten the Lung, and stop coughing; it is also effective for Fei Yong (Lung Abscess) and Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy), serving as an excellent symptomatic treatment.
Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 liang) Ground into powder, mixed with rock sugar or honey to form pills the size of a longan seed. Can be held in the mouth to dissolve or chewed and swallowed. If one wishes to forcefully arrest chronic cough,
use Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus)
or millet.

Treats cough caused by Phlegm-Dampness and rebellious Qi. (When the Lung is injured by Fire, Qi rebels causing cough. When the Spleen retains Dampness, Phlegm is generated causing cough. Although diseases differ among the Six Fu organs, the key lies in the Lung. The Lung is the canopy of the Five Zang organs, connects downward to the Bladder, extends outward to the skin and hair, governs Qi, and controls respiration.
For new-onset cough with a floating pulse, indicating exterior pathogenic factors, dispersing methods are appropriate. For a solid pulse, indicating internal Heat, clearing and draining methods are appropriate. For a soggy and scattered pulse, indicating Lung deficiency, warming and tonifying methods are appropriate. Chronic cough leading to deficiency of both Lung and Stomach, with loss of appetite, requires warming the middle and assisting the Stomach, combined with anti-cough herbs. The *Suwen* states: Why does the Lung cause cough?
All Five Zang and Six Fu organs can cause cough, not just the Lung. The skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the Lung. Pathogenic factors first invade the skin and hair, then enter via this correspondence.
Each Zang organ contracts disease during its associated season; if not its season, disease transmits from other organs. External contraction involves the Lung governing the skin and hair. Wind, Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness pathogens, from
internal transmission to the Zang-Fu organs, result in cough. Internal origin involves Seven Emotions and dietary irregularities causing internal injury and rebellious Qi. The Lung is the gate for Qi entry and exit;
thus, pathogenic factors from the Five Zang organs steam upward to the Lung, resulting in cough. However, not all Wind, Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness invasions cause cough, because severe pathogens directly injure the Zang-Fu organs, leading to Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Wenre (Warm Disease) syndromes. Not all Seven Emotions cause cough, because the pathology is shallow, remaining in the primary Zang organ without transmitting.
In Shanghan, cough is considered a mild symptom, whereas cough from Seven Emotions or dietary irregularities develops only after a long time.)
Xingren (Apricot Seed, peeled and tips removed) Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) Fuling (Poria, 1 qian) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, 0.5 qian) Decoct with fresh ginger.
For Fire-cough, add Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis);
Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix). At noon,
Dong Dong (Asparagi Radix and Ophiopogonis Radix), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia).
If blood is present, use more Shashen (Glehniae Radix).
This is a general formula for treating cough. Xingren (Apricot Seed) releases the muscle layer and dispels Cold, descends Qi, and moistens dryness. Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) clears Fire, dissipates nodules, moistens the Lung, and transforms Phlegm. Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) astringes Lung Qi and calms
cough,
