[Zhimi Formula] Treats phlegm-dampness stagnating in the epigastrium, causing pain in both arms. (The Spleen governs the four limbs; when Spleen Qi is stagnant and fails to descend, it attacks the arms upward. The pulse being deep and fine indicates this condition.)
Banxia Qu (Prepared Pinellia Rhizome Paste) (2 liang) Fuling (Poria) (1 liang, mixed with milk) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) (5 qian, stir-fried with bran) Fenghua Xiao (Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus) (2.5 qian. If pills cannot be made immediately, they may be taken directly with Ginger Decoction.)
Banxia dries dampness, Fuling leaches out water, Zhike moves Qi, collectively resolving phlegm and softening hardness. (Used to remove stubborn phlegm.) Fresh Ginger counteracts the toxicity of Banxia and eliminates phlegm, allowing phlegm to dissipate as Qi moves.
[Sanziyangqin Tang] Also known as Miaoying Wan. Treats sudden onset of pulling or hook-like pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, waist, neck, joints, and bones, with the pain migrating unpredictably. Or cold numbness in the hands and feet, with unsmooth Qi and blood vessels. This is due to phlegm-saliva lingering above and below the diaphragm; it is often mistaken for paralysis, which is incorrect.
Gansui (Core removed) Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix) (Skin removed) Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen) Equal parts ground into powder, formed into pills with paste. Take 5-7 pills before bed with Ginger Decoction, increasing up to 10 pills. For severe phlegm, add Pengzhu (Curcumae Rhizoma).
Li Shizhen stated: Phlegm-saliva, as a pathological product, rises and falls with Qi, reaching everywhere. Entering the Heart causes confusion, forming Epilepsy (Dianxian). Entering the Lungs blocks the orifices, causing wheezing, coughing, coldness of the back, and carbuncles. Its efficacy relies on the free flow of Qi.
[Lingyuan Formula] Treats various epilepsy caused by wind-phlegm, as well as manic-depressive disorders and heart diseases. (The cause of various epilepsies lies in fright, fear, worry, and anger, leading to excessive Fire harassing the Heart and phlegm blocking the Heart orifices. Upon onset, there is sudden collapse, convulsions, shouting, and salivation, followed by awakening after a while. Those with body heat and superficial floating pulses are Yang Epilepsy, belonging to the Six Fu Organs, and are easy to treat. Those with cold body and deep internal pulses are Yin Epilepsy, belonging to the Five Zang Organs, and are difficult to treat. Essentially, it is merely phlegm, fire, and fright. Manic-depression also stems from this.)
Chensha (Cinnabar) (1 liang, select bright pieces) Ruxiang (Olibanum) (select lustrous pieces) Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen) (5 qian, stir-fried) Mix with warm wine and take. Drink freely until intoxicated, allow the patient to sleep undisturbed for one or two days. Add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang if necessary.
[Han's Formula] Treats elderly patients with excess Qi and abundant phlegm, presenting with asthma, fullness, and poor appetite. (Phlegm does not arise spontaneously but moves due to Fire; excess Qi transforms into Fire. Upward congestion causes asthma; phlegm-fire blocking the chest causes loss of appetite.)
Zisuzi (Perillae Fructus) (prefer sinking ones) Baijiezi (Sinapis Semen) Laifuzi (Raphani Semen) Each lightly stir-fried and ground. Decoct and take. Alternatively, use equal parts, or designate the chief herb based on the primary symptoms.
Baijiezi removes phlegm, Zisuzi directs Qi downward, Laifu reduces food stagnation. All are herbs that move Qi and resolve phlegm; when Qi moves, Fire descends and phlegm dissipates. (Wu Hegao argued for attacking the pathogen first, then tonifying deficiency.)
