[General Discussion] Heart pain is equivalent to epigastric pain. It may be caused by cold, heat, rebellious Qi, phlegm-fluid retention, parasites, or fixed blood stasis, all of which can induce pain. For instance, in true heart pain (Zhen Xin Tong), severe cold directly strikes the central palace (Middle Jiao/Spleen-Stomach). The hands and feet turn blue and cold beyond the elbows and knees; death follows immediately upon onset. This condition cannot be treated with medicine. (Decocting white poplar flowers [Bai Yang Hua] for oral administration might offer a chance of rescue.)
[Epigastric Distension and Pain due to Food Stagnation and Rebellious Qi] When old food stagnates in the upper Jiao, both the heart region and abdomen are connected and painful. There is a persistent urge to vomit. To achieve rapid effect, employ the vomiting method from the Treatise on Cold Damage [Shang Han Lun], which will stop it. Use Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) and Huo Xiang (Patchouli Herb), each 1.5 qian; Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome), Wu Yao (Lindera Root), and Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), each 2 qian; Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), 0.7 fen; Nong Po (Magnolia Bark) and Zhi Qiao (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit), each 1 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. If the food burden is heavy, add Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit) and Mai Ya (Germinated Hordeum Fructus), each 2 qian. If there is cold stagnation, add Jiao Gan Jiang (Charred Dried Ginger), 1-2 qian. If rebellious Qi is severe, add Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood) and Qing Pi (Green Tangerine Peel), etc. If vomiting accompanies pain, add Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) and Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), etc. If hernia is also present, add Li Zhi He (Lychee Seed), roasted until cooked, 2-3 qian.
[Pain due to Cold Stagnation and Phlegm-Fluid Retention] Chest and abdominal fullness and distension, retching. During pain, the hands and feet are cold, and the whole body sweats cold sweat. Bowel movements are clear, and there is no thirst. Use Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Bai Dou Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) in equal parts, grind into powder, and take with ginger decoction, 0.5-0.7 qian per dose. Take two to three times daily for recovery. Use Liang Jiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma) and Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome), stir-fried in equal parts, grind into powder, and take with plain hot water, 2 qian per dose for efficacy. (If caused by cold, double the amount of Liang Jiang; if caused by Qi stagnation, double the amount of Xiang Fu.)
[Universal Treatment for Heart Pain] For early-stage epigastric pain, use Dan Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean), 5 qian, decoct in water to make half a zhong of liquid, take orally to stop pain. For chronic, recurrent pain, use Li Zhi He (Lychee Seed), roasted until charred and crushed, 1 qian, and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), 0.7 fen, grind into powder, and take with plain hot water or wine for miraculous effect. Use Er Can Sha (Mulberry Mouldy Sand), any amount, grind into powder, soak in boiling water, filter cleanly, dry in the sun, take 1-2 qian per dose with plain hot water. Apply Wan Ling Gao (Ten Thousand Spirits Ointment) to the painful area; after 30-50 days, the root cause is eliminated. Mud from within sandalwood holes, mixed with wine, taken orally is effective. Wa Leng Zi (Arcae Shell, i.e., Ark Shell), soaked in vinegar seven times, ground into powder, take 3 qian per dose with plain hot water. If all other medicines fail, use Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizoma), 3 qian, decoct in wine and take to stop pain. Ya Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), any amount, burn slightly until smoke just ceases, collect the residue, grind into powder, mix with distilled liquor, take 0.5-0.7 qian for efficacy. For long-standing, unbearable heart pain, boil small garlic heads in vinegar, eat until full without adding salt. Whether the condition has lasted ten or five years, relief comes immediately.
[Abdominal Pain] It differs in causes such as cold, heat, food, phlegm, fixed blood stasis, intestinal abscess, parasites, and hernia. Generally, sweet and warm methods are primary. However, in summer and autumn, sudden unbearable pain should be treated according to summerheat patterns. If heat, there is dry fecal impaction. If yin pattern pain, there is cold limbs or cold sweat. (If heat, cool and disperse, assisted by sweet and warm; if yin pattern, treat with Lizhong Tang [Regulate the Middle Decoction], formula see Jaundice section.) Alternatively, Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus), three grains, and Hong Zao (Jujubae Fructus), one piece, pound together into a paste, wrap and bind on the navel to stop pain immediately.
[Unbearable Heart and Abdominal Pain in All Men and Women] Remove roots from two jin of scallion bulbs, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cloth to make two packs. Iron them on the navel. Replace with the next pack when cold. If no scallions, leeks (or table salt) can be used. Sudden severe pain below the navel with black coloration in the philtrum indicates an untreatable condition.
[Heart and Abdominal Parasite Pain] Nausea, vomiting water, extreme biting pain, pale face lacking luster, pain that comes and goes, slight coldness in limbs. Ability to eat and drink once pain subsides indicates parasites. Use Gan Qi (Dry Resin of Toxicodendron Vernicifluum), four liang, slow fire until smoke ceases, make pills with vinegar paste, size of mung beans. Take fifteen pills after meals with wine or vinegar, twice daily. Crush grass, extract juice, mix with vinegar and take for efficacy. Use Duan Shi (Calcined Pyrite), 2-3 qian, mix with egg to make pancakes, take before meals. Soon after, parasites exit via stool. Parasite bites feel like刺 (stinging). Use Sheng Ai Zhi (Fresh Mugwort Juice) (if none available, use Shu Ai Ye [Dried Mugwort Leaf], two liang, three bowls of water, decoct to one bowl). Fast overnight. In the morning, on an empty stomach, first chew a small amount of fragrant food without swallowing, letting the smell attract parasites, then drink mugwort juice. Parasites will naturally exit. (Also treats sudden death from ghost strike and acute evil abdominal pain.) If pain moves from top to bottom, accompanied by gurgling sounds, scratching in desperation, restlessness in sleep and sitting, scraping sensation below the heart extending to the chest, this is accumulated blood stasis not resolved, stirred by fire. Do not mistake it for parasites and administer anthelmintics.
[Heart and Abdominal Phlegm-Fluid Pain] During pain, there is a sense of discomfort and restlessness, feeling both hungry and full, lingering desire to vomit. Vomiting brings slight relief. Use Jiang Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) and Zhu Ling (Poria), each two liang; Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), stir-fried yellow, each one liang; Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), four liang, chopped, soaked in salt water, mixed, dried, and sun-dried; Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), five qian. Grind all into powder, make pills using water method. Take 1 qian per dose with light ginger decoction.
[Ascariasis Colic Heart and Abdominal Pain] Use two Wumei (Mume Fructus) and fourteen Chuan Jiao (Sichuan Pepper), decoct in water and take to stop pain.
[Blood Stasis Heart and Abdominal Pain] Habitual preference for hot foods leads to fixed blood stasis remaining in the stomach. Use Shan Yang Xue (Capra Hircus Blood), one fen, dissolve in distilled liquor and take to dissipate stasis. Chest...
[Stagnant Fire Heart and Abdominal Pain] In cases of long-standing illness, stagnant heat generates fire. If warm dispersal fails, use Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus), one liang stir-fried with ginger juice until black, and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), three fen, decoct in water and take. If heat is felt at onset, use Guo Qi Mei (Pot Bottom Coal), three qian, mix with warm child's urine and take for cure.
[Qi Stagnation Abdominal Pain] Wu Yao (Lindera Root), water-ground to make strong juice, half a zhong, add Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel) and Su Ye (Perillae Folium), each 1.5 qian, decoct together and take.
[Nine Types of Heart Pain] Grind thousand-year-old Duan Shi (Calcined Pyrite). At noon on Dragon Boat Festival, pound single garlic cloves into pills, size of paulownia seeds. Take thirteen pills with distilled liquor.
[Hypochondriac Pain] Grind Jie Cai Zi (Mustard Seed) into powder, mix with water and apply externally. Stir-fry leeks until hot and iron the area to stop pain. For hypochondriac pain due to liver fire, or a hard mass like food accumulation under the ribs, use Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), six liang stir-fried, and Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), one liang, soaked in hot water four to five times then stir-fried. Grind all into powder, make pills with steamed bread dough, size of mung beans. Take thirty pills with light vinegar decoction. When liver Qi becomes peaceful, pain stops.
[Heart Qi Pain] Use half a sheng of Sheng Zhi Ma (Raw Sesame Seed). When pain occurs, do not look, just grab as needed, any amount. Stir-fry until black in a copper pot, grind into powder. Good...
[Seven Emotions Mutual Influence Pill] Treats all frustrations in public and private life, loss of ambition regarding fame and profit, depression, worry, damage from seven emotions, lack of appetite, sallow complexion, emaciation, chest and diaphragm stuffiness and pain. Use Xiang Fu Mi (Cyperus Rhizome Kernel), one jin, soaked in running water for three days, stir-fried dry in clay pot until powder. Bai Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), four liang. Grind both finely. Refine...
[Sprain Pain] For sprains, contusions causing waist and hypochondriac pain, whether bleeding or not, with bluish-purple skin and flesh. First, stir-fry Cong Bai (Scallion White) until hot, pound into paste, apply to injury site and rub thoroughly. Then, use Sheng Da Huang (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma), ground into powder, mix with fresh ginger juice and apply. Internally, drink aged wine until drunk. Even if not healed for half a year, immediate verification is seen.
