[General Discussion] Malaria (Nüe) differs in having internal causes versus external infections. The intervals of attack vary by one, two, or three days. The treatment principle is: for pathogens entering from the exterior, dispersing methods should be used; meanwhile, supporting Stomach Qi (Wei Qi) is fundamental. One must also differentiate between Yin and Yang divisions to administer medication. For pathogenic malaria and newly onset chills and fever, after taking dispersing medicines for three to five doses, if the condition lessens, antimalarial (jie yao) drugs may be used. For deficiency malaria and long-standing cases, tonifying Qi and Blood should be the main approach. If antimalarial drugs are used hastily, it will damage the Spleen and Stomach, leading to a lingering and unceasing condition.
[Three Miraculous Formulas for Treating Malaria] (Regardless of age, duration, whether attacks occur daily, every second day, or every third day, without modification, taken in sequence, all recover promptly.)
First Formula: Guang Pi (Chenpi, aged tangerine peel), Jiang Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome processed with ginger), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Wei Ling Xian (Clematis Root) (each 1 qian). Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (soaked in rice water for one day, sliced, stir-fried until clean, 8 fen). Nong Po (Magnolia Bark) (stir-fried with ginger juice, 8 fen). Chai Hu Shao (Bupleuri Radix tip) (8 fen). Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (6 fen). Bing Lang (Areca Seed) (6 fen). Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma prepared with honey) (3 fen). Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) (3 slices). Well water and river water, each one zhong, decocted to seven-tenths volume. Taken on an empty stomach. The dregs are decocted again and taken. If headache occurs, add Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) 1 qian. This formula pacifies the Stomach, eliminates phlegm, regulates Qi, and removes dampness, possessing the function of guiding and opening pathways first. For mild illness, recovery occurs after two doses. If after three doses the condition lessens but does not resolve, immediately use the Second Formula for three to five doses.
Second Formula: He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) (prepared, 3 qian; if ineffective after three doses, use raw He Shou Wu 3 qian). Guang Pi, Chai Hu, Bai Fu Ling, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 8 fen). Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-stir-fried). Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Wei Ling Xian (each 1 qian). Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (2 qian). Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (vinegar-processed, 2 qian). Zhi Gan Cao (3 fen). Take again. This formula...
Third Formula: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 qian). Zhi Huang Qi (Astragali Radix prepared with honey) (1.2 qian). Dang Gui (1.2 qian). Bai Zhu (soil-stir-fried, 1 qian). Guang Pi, Chai Hu (each 8 fen). Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (4 fen). Zhi Gan Cao (3 fen). Wei Jiang (Roasted Ginger) (1 slice). Hei Zao (Black Date) (one fruit). Decoct in water. Taken when half-hungry. After three to five doses, Yuan Qi (Original Qi) becomes sufficient, and the disease will not recur.
[Treating Early Malaria Without Sweating] Su Ye (Perillae Folium) (2-3 qian). Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (3-5 pieces). Bian Dou Ye (Lablab Leaf) (5-7 leaves). Decoct strongly. Add 4-5 spoons of Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice). Drink hot while thirsty during the malaria attack to induce sweating. If no sweat, take again. Avoid wind exposure during sweating. If heat signs appear and there is no sweat, administer cooling medicines to moisten, which will also induce sweat.
[Summerheat Malaria] Characterized by fever only with little chills, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, and red, scanty, difficult urination. Qing Hao Zi (Artemisiae Annuae Fructus) (steeped in child's urine, baked dry, ground fine). On the evening of the first day, mix 3 qian with plain boiled water. On the morning of the attack, mix 3 qian with light wine. For severe summerheat, mix with well water.
[Spleen Cold Malaria] Shi Hu Sui (One handful, i.e., Euphorbiae Helioscopiae Herba). Crush to obtain juice, half a zhong. Mix evenly with hot wine. Effective upon ingestion. Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome) (stir-fried with sesame oil), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (pounded until scorched, each 1 liang). Grind into powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Mix with Pig Gallbladder Juice (Zhu Dan) to form a paste. At the time of attack, take mixed with hot wine. (Alternatively, make pills with gallbladder juice, taken with wine is also good. Generally, cold originates from the Gallbladder channel; Pig Gallbladder serves as a guiding herb. Ginger enters the Gallbladder, dispels cold, and dries Spleen/Stomach dampness. Cold and heat counterbalance each other, regulating Yin and Yang; very effective.) For those with more chills than fever and loss of appetite, this stops the condition immediately. Ju Hong (Exocarpium Citri Grandis) (soaked in ginger juice overnight, boiled in stone vessel over double boiler, dried and ground. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down with Black Date decoction).
[Malaria Chills and Fever] Luo Bo Zi (Brassicae Semina) (cleaned, stir-fried until smoke ceases, preserved nature, ground extremely fine). For new malaria, mix 3 qian with plain boiled water. Drink only the liquid, discard dregs. Severe cases resolve in three doses. For long-standing illness with body deficiency, add 3 fen of Ren Shen, decoct together and take. Du Tou Suan (Single-clove Garlic). Roast熟 on fire, take 2 qian with wine. Several...
[Pathogenic Malaria] Hei Niu Wei (Black Cow Tail) (burned to preserve nature, ground to powder). Take 2 qian per dose, washed down with wine. Three doses yield effect.
[Effective Formula for Long-standing Malaria and Yin Malaria] Qiao Mai Mian (Buckwheat Flour) as needed. Mix with Bie Xue (Turtle Blood) to form pills. Dry in shade. On the morning of the attack facing east, take 3 qian with plain boiled water. Small...
[Elderly Malaria, Labor Malaria, Long-standing Non-resolution] Bie Jia (vinegar-processed until yellow, ground extremely fine). Take 1 qian per dose. Add Xiong Huang (Realgar) 1-2 fen. Mix with wine and take. Interval...
[Antimalarial Formula] Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix head), Zhi Shou Wu, Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus stir-fried) (each 3 qian). Wine and water, one bowl each. Slow fire decoction to one bowl. Expose to dew overnight. Warm take next morning. Applicable regardless of daily, second-day, or third-day attacks, and for long-standing illness with body deficiency. Children take half dose. Zhi Mu, Sheng Bing Lang, Xiang Bei (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus) (each 2 qian). Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix) (1 qian). Water and wine, one bowl each. Decoct to one bowl. Expose to dew overnight. Warm take next morning separated by soup. For body deficiency, add 3 fen Ren Shen, take together. When taking Chang Shan, avoid chicken meat for three months. Da Zao Rou (Date Flesh) two pieces, remove skin and pit. Ban Mao (Mylabris) two pieces, bake and grind. Mix into date flesh, grind evenly. Add a little cooked lard. Pound into cakes, finger-sized. Apply to Yintang acupoint between eyebrows. Stops within one week. She Tui (Ophichthidae Skin) one strip, complete. Wrap firmly in paper. Men left arm, women right arm. Tie to arm so patient does not know. Avoid four eyes seeing it. Upon cure, send to wilderness, do not open to look. Effective for daily or second-day attacks. Duanwu Wushi (Noon on Dragon Boat Festival). Take Xia Ma (Toad) (large is best). Hang upside down to dry in shade. Tie to arm so patient does not know. Stops immediately.
[San Yin Malaria] For long-standing malaria where diet remains normal, use He Shou Wu (2 qian), Ren Shen (1 qian), Gui Yuan Rou (Longan Aril) (ten pieces), Gan Cao (Zhi, 3 fen). Decoct in water and take. Cures immediately. Da Dan Cai (Mussel) (boiled soft with broth). Washed down with aged wine. Long-term use stops the disease. Nan Tian Zhu Zi (Terminalia Chebula Fruit? Note: Context implies specific local herb, likely Terminalia or similar astringent, kept as Nan Tian Zhu Zi) aged one year. Steam熟. One grain per year of age. Take with plain boiled water every morning. Chen Xiang Yuan (Aged Citrus Fruit) one piece. Cut open. Add 3 qian Xiong Huang powder. Seal original shape. Wrap in paper. Roast over fire until smoke ceases. Take out, grind to powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, washed down with rice drink. Suitable for early stage.
[San Yin Malaria Long-standing Non-resolution] Ye Qia Gen (Solanum Wild Root) (1 liang). Do not touch water or iron tools. Use non-grain alcohol (Wu Hui Jiu) one jin. Wash mud off root using original wine. Clarify and filter original wine. Add root, decoct to one bowl. Take on the day of attack. Stops immediately.
[Nüe Pi] (Also known as Nu Mu: mass forming under hypochondrium due to long-standing malaria causing pain). He Tao Qiao (Walnut Shell) ash ground fine 3 qian. Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) ground fine 8 fen. Mix with good wine and take. Dissipates after three to five times. External use: Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) 5 qian, Du Tou Suan Rou (Single-clove Garlic Flesh) 1 liang. Pound together until rotten. Apply to affected area. Cover with cloth. Also treats various Pi masses.
