[Song] True Yuan (Vital Energy) is gradually depleted, forming consumptive disease; bone-steaming fever and vexation evaporate Qi and Blood. Qing Gu San (Bone-Clearing Powder) and Bao Zhen Tang (True-Protecting Decoction) clear internal heat; Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) and Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) treat afternoon tidal fever. Bu Xu Ba Wu Tang (Eight-Ingredient Decoction for Tonifying Deficiency) nourishes Ying (Nutritive) Blood; when deficiency is extreme, Shen Bai Feng Gao (Ginseng and White Phoenix Paste) is used. Hua Rui Shi San (Flower-Rock Powder) stops bleeding; to treat Jie Lao (Robbing Consumption), refined Qing Hao Gao (Artemisiae Annuae Paste) must be used. Tai Ping Wan (Peaceful Pill) treats Wei Zheng (Flaccidity Syndrome) by clearing the Lung; Xiao Hua Wan (Digestion Pill) causes Phlegm to dissipate naturally. Men must first tonify the Kidney; women only need to regulate menstruation. For Chuan Shi (Transmitting Corpse/Infectious TB), urgently use Tian Ling San (Heavenly Skull Powder); do not let it linger and spread, becoming a source of disaster.
[Dissertation] The consumptive disease in men arises from injury to Essence; in women, from amenorrhea; in children, from the maternal womb. Generally, men reach seminal emission at sixteen, and women experience Tian Gui (Menstruation) at fourteen, yet their Qi and Blood are not yet full. Later generations indulge in sexual activity too early, depleting True Yuan. True Yin is deficient internally, causing deficient Fire to blaze. Metal of the Lung is injured, unable to generate Water of the Kidney. When Kidney Water is exhausted, it cannot control Heart Fire. Once Heart Fire flares up, Kidney Fire follows, leading to nocturnal emissions and "ghost intercourse." When Lung Qi is deficient, the Cou Li (pores) become loose, leading to night sweats and spontaneous sweating. Fire agitates Blood, which rises with the Fire, causing coughing and hemoptysis. Examining the *Nei Jing* and ancient masters' theories, terms include Lao Zhai (Consumptive Disease), Lao Ji (Extreme Exhaustion), Yin Xu (Yin Deficiency), Bu Zu (Insufficiency), and Xu Sun (Deficiency Injury). However, seeking reality through names, these are merely differences among Qi Deficiency, Blood Deficiency, and Yin Deficiency. Insufficiency of Spleen and Lung constitutes Qi Deficiency. Insufficiency of Heart and Liver constitutes Blood Deficiency. Deficiency of Kidney Water constitutes Yin Deficiency. Qi belongs to Yang, Blood belongs to Yin; Blood Deficiency also falls under Yin Deficiency. Those suffering from this should urgently abstain from sexual desire to nourish Essence, practice inner visualization to nourish Spirit, and avoid anger and overwork to prevent Qi depletion. Then True Yin Water will naturally fill, and Fire within the Five Viscera will subside. How could such a disease not be curable? It is only because they have no restraint in desires, irregular daily routines, and excessive food and drink, causing Spirit to scatter and Essence to exhaust, Blood to dry up and Qi to perish, until unremitting fever leads to death with a skeletal frame, truly lamentable! Moreover, one person's pity is insufficient; intimate caregivers, siblings, or children may contract the "evil Qi," named Chuan Shi (Transmitting Corpse), even leading to family extinction. This disease is most malignant; prolonged accumulation of Heat-Toxin generates strange insects that devour the essence of viscera, creating bizarre forms, truly shocking. Thus, consumption injuring the Liver produces hair-like insects (like hedgehogs or tile worms) eating sinews; injuring the Heart produces feathered insects (like moths, mosquitoes, birds) eating blood vessels; injuring the Spleen produces naked insects (like earthworms) eating muscles; injuring the Lung produces shelled insects (like turtles, crabs) eating skin fat; injuring the Kidney produces scaled insects (like fish, dragons) eating bone marrow. Sometimes accompanied by Ministerial Fire, resembling fierce feathered insects like owls, forms are countless. Any such syndrome should be treated early: first to kill insects and cut off the root, second to tonify deficiency and restore Yuan Qi; delay renders treatment futile. Bone-steaming with red malar flushes is untreatable (because bone-steaming heat originates from Kidney Deficiency; Kidney belongs to Water, Water is cold, Kidney Excess is cold, Kidney Deficiency is hot. Kidney heat steams bones and marrow. Kidney governs bone marrow, and malar areas are the root of bone). Consumptive disease with hoarseness indicates Lung Extinction, untreatable (Lung governs Qi and voice; Lung scorched by Fire, Metal cannot resonate). Consumptive disease with sudden lower body carbuncles is fatal. Hemorrhoids/fistula preceding consumptive disease is fatal; consumptive disease preceding hemorrhoids/fistula is also fatal (Hemorrhoids connect to Large Intestine, the Fu organ of Lung; Lung scorched by Fire, residual heat remains in Large Intestine). Consumptive disease sleeping on one side is untreatable (lack of Blood to nourish sinews prevents movement). Consumptive disease with diarrhea and anorexia is fatal (Stomach is the sea of Five Viscera and Six Fu organs, source of transformation; if source cuts off, Essence and Blood cannot be generated).
[Pulse Diagnosis] Qi Deficiency presents with fine pulse, or slow and forceless, with the Right Pulse often weak. Blood Deficiency presents with large pulse, or rapid and forceless, with the Left Pulse often weak. Yang Deficiency presents with slow pulse. Yin Deficiency presents with wiry pulse. True Qi Deficiency presents with tight pulse. In men with chronic illness, a weak Qi Kou (Radial artery distal crease) pulse indicates death, strong indicates survival; in women, a strong Ren Ying (Carotid artery) pulse indicates survival, weak indicates death. The Classics state: Fine and minute pulse indicates both Qi and Blood deficiency; small pulse indicates both Qi and Blood scarcity. It is also said: The pulse of Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) is either floating-large or wiry-rapid. Large indicates consumption; wiry also indicates consumption. Large is easier to treat as Qi and Blood are not yet depleted and can be gathered and corrected. Wiry is difficult to treat as Qi and Blood are already consumed and hard to tonify. If double-wiry, it indicates pathogenic invasion of the Spleen; adding rapidity indicates danger.
Ge Kejiu's Ten Divine Formulas for Treating Consumptive Disease
Master Ge stated: Among all diseases, none is harder to treat than consumptive disease. Quack doctors do not investigate its source or root, sometimes administering great-cold formulas or treating with great-hot medicines, practicing blindly without effect. They do not know that great-cold further empties the Middle Jiao, and great-hot further exhausts the interior. Therefore, among those treating zhai disease, not one in ten thousand succeeds. Now, the order of medication is listed below:
For vomiting and coughing blood, first use Shi Hui San (Ten Ashes Powder) to stop it. If extremely severe, use Hua Rui Shi San (Flower-Rock Powder). Generally, heat in Blood causes flow, cold in Blood causes coagulation, and black color stops bleeding; this is the principle. After stopping bleeding, the patient's body will slightly relax; use Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) to tonify, allowing them to sleep soundly without waking. Upon waking, the disease severity reduces by five or six parts. Then differentiate the condition using the following formulas: Bao He Tang (Harmony-Protecting Decoction) stops cough and calms the Lung. Bao Zhen Tang (True-Protecting Decoction) tonifies deficiency and clears heat. Tai Ping Wan (Peaceful Pill) moistens the Lung and supports flaccidity. Xiao Hua Wan (Digestion Pill) resolves Phlegm and moves Qi, modified according to symptoms. Administration method: Before three meals daily, take Bao Zhen Tang; after three meals, take Bao He Tang, alternating the two. Also, brew strong Hou Po (Mint) decoction to gargle and swallow. Chew one Tai Ping Wan slowly, swallow, then hold another in the mouth to dissolve slowly. Do this before bed. At night, Lung orifices open, and medicine slips into them; this secret is crucial! If Phlegm is obstructing heavily, first swallow one hundred Xiao Hua Wan pills mixed with maltose syrup, then chew and hold Tai Ping Wan as before, lying supine to sleep. After taking the previous seven medicines, if Lung dryness persists with residual cough, boil Run Fei Gao (Moisten-Lung Paste) and take regularly. Then cook Bai Feng Gao (White Phoenix Paste) to restore True Yuan and complete the foundation. After recovery, combine and take Shi Zhen Wan (Ten Precious Pills), which is the formula for concluding treatment and restoring strength.
