The so-called postpartum Ru Lao (Postpartum Exhaustion Syndrome) arises because the time since childbirth is short, blood and Qi are weak, and dietary intake has not yet returned to balance, lasting less than a month. The blood and Qi are deficient and emaciated; improper nursing care allows Wind-Cold pathogenic factors to invade. Wind-Cold clashes with blood and Qi, failing to warm the skin and muscles, causing the person to feel exhausted and fatigued, alternating between lying down and rising, with a haggard appearance and indigestion. Wind-Cold pathogenic factors invade the Lung; the Lung suffers from slight Cold, resulting in coughing, asthma with fatigue, headache, cramping and stabbing pain in the abdomen, dry mouth, and pain in all joints. Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are affected by Wind pathogens, flowing into the Zang-Fu organs, occurring frequently within moments, often accompanied by night sweats, alternating chills and fever resembling malaria, irritability in the back and ribs, inability to lift the limbs, and heaviness making it difficult to leave the bed. This is Ru Lao. If chills occur at this time, both blood and Qi are deficient, leading to alternating chills and fever, with gradual emaciation and weakness, hence named Ru Lao. Even after lochia (postpartum discharge) fails to cease, this condition can also result, manifesting as intermittent chills and fever, stabbing pain in the waist and abdomen, severe cases unable to eat, and failure of skin and muscles to regenerate.
