The manifestation of nodules forming on the lips is generally similar to lip sores (lip ulcers) and tight lips. However, when the swelling progresses to form hard nodules, it is because the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian are exterior-interiorly related, and heat pathogens accumulate in both the Zang and Fu organs, thus leading to the formation of nodules.
Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction)
Indicated for heat accumulation in the Spleen and Stomach, where wind-cold pathogens contend with each other, causing nodules to form on the lip margins, presenting as hard, painful swellings.
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, half tael), Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi, one tael), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, remove rhizome head), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, baked), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, remove black heart), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted and crushed), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, remove heart).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct the ingredients in water until three-sevenths of the volume remains, strain, and take after meals.
Shengma San (Cimicifuga Powder)
Indicated for wind-heat pathogens in the Spleen and Stomach, causing lip swelling, nodule formation, and aggregation.
Ingredients: Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, one tael), Bailian (Bulbus Iridis Tectorii, three qian), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae, three qian), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae, three qian, crushed), Lingyangjiaoxie (Cornu Saigae Tataricae powder, three qian), Loulu (Radix Radicis Cynanchi Stauntoniae, three qian), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, three qian), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, half tael, bran-fried until slightly yellow).
Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with wine.
Songzhi Gao (Pine Rosin Ointment)
Indicated for heat-toxins in the Spleen and Stomach, causing tubercles on the lips accompanied by swelling and pain.
Ingredients: Songzhi (Pini Resina, one tael), Baijiaoxiang (Resina Liquidambaris, one tael), Xunluxiang (Resina Olibani, one tael), La (Cera Flava, one tael), Danggui mo (Powder of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, one tael), Gancao mo (Powder of Radix Glycyrrhizae, one tael), Zhu Zhi (Searcum Porcinum, appropriate amount).
Preparation and Administration: Melt the pig fat first, then sequentially add Songzhi, Baijiaoxiang, and Xunluxiang, stirring evenly. Store in a porcelain box. Apply a small amount externally to the affected area of the lips.
Dihuang Jian (Rehmannia Electuary)
Indicated for wind-heat in the Spleen, causing lip sores.
Ingredients: Sheng Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, juice one sheng), Sheng Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, remove heart), Weirui (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, four liang each), Xixin (Herba Asari, remove seedlings and leaves), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, roasted), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae).
Preparation and Administration: Soak the herbs overnight, then decoct and concentrate. Store in a container. Take a small amount to hold in the mouth or apply topically.
Shengma Yin (Cimicifugia Drink)
Indicated for heat in the Spleen and Stomach, where wind-cold pathogens invade, causing lip swelling, nodule formation, and pain.
Ingredients: Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved, half tael each), Longdan (Radix Gentianae), Qing Zhupi (Cortex Phyllostachys Viridis), Gegen (Radix Puerariae, crushed, one fen each), Yiyiren (Semen Coicis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae).
Administration: Decoct in water and drink.
Duhuo San (Angelica Pubescens Powder)
Indicated for malignant nodules and swelling on the lips, caused by stagnation due to heat pathogens in the Spleen and Stomach.
Ingredients: Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, three qian), Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, three qian), Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, three qian), Sangjisheng (Ramulus Taxilli, three qian), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae, three qian), Xijiaoxie (Cornu Rhinocerotis powder, three qian), Hanfangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae, three qian).
