Whenever the head is struck by an object, causing rupture with brain marrow and bone protruding, medication should be applied rapidly. The head is the convergence point of all Yang meridians, and the brain is the seat of life commands. If the head is broken and marrow flows out, delaying rescue will lead to immediate death. One should quickly seal and wrap the wound with medicine to prevent pathogenic factors from invading, nourish Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi), and stabilize the spirit; only then might survival be possible. If symptoms such as upward deviation of the eyes (Dai Yan) and fixed staring occur, it is incurable.
Formulas:
Pig Blood Irrigation Formula (from *Zhou Hou Fang*) treats head trauma with brain rupture and marrow protrusion, unconsciousness but with heart function remaining. Use one he of piglet blood; if unavailable, ordinary pig blood may be used. Apply a small amount directly into the brain cavity for immediate awakening.
Mercury Formula (from *Zhou Hou Fang*) treats severe brain rupture with marrow protrusion approaching death. Take two qian of mercury, administering approximately one qian per dose to restore vitality. If no effect is felt after a short while, administer again.
Soybean Wine (from *Sheng Hui Fang*) treats head trauma with brain marrow protrusion and wind-stroke with jaw stiffness. Crush one dou of soybeans, steam them hot in a steamer, and pour one dou of wine over them. Drink one zhan per dose, continuing for three to five doses until sweating occurs, which indicates efficacy.
Falls and blows cause internal disturbance of Heart Qi, leading to stagnation of Ying and Wei and blood-qiyuaning numerous disorders. Sudden injury to the chest and hypochondrium causes Qi to lodge in the shoulder membranes; damaged blood enters the stomach and accumulates. Severe cases result in hemoptysis or hematemesis. Treatment should harmonize Ying and Wei, relieve internal tension, and expel damaged blood.
Formulas:
Ejiao Pill (from *Sheng Hui Fang*) treats injuries from falling from heights, including fractures and internal damage to the five Zang organs. Mild cases present with hemoptysis; severe cases with hematemesis.
Ingredients: Ejiao (San liang, crushed and fried until yellow), Rousongrong (soaked in wine overnight, scraped clean, dried), Chuanjiao (remove pits and closed ones, lightly fried), Baishaoyao, Danggui (chopped and lightly fried), Xiong, Yanshusu, Shudihuang, Guixin, Chuan Dahuang (chopped and lightly fried), Huangqi (chopped), each 1 liang; Aye (1.5 liang, lightly fried); Mudanpi, Fuzi (processed, skin and navel removed, 1 liang each); Niuxi (removing sprouts, 1 liang). Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Boil one sheng of wine for three to five boils. Add half of the powder to the wine, mix with wheat paste, and simmer slowly until thick. Add the remaining powder, knead 200-300 times, and form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills with Doulin wine, three to four times daily.
Jisu Decoction (from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats injuries from falling off horses, internal trauma with hematemesis, sudden thirst, irritability and heat in the back, nausea, and a metallic taste in the throat.
Ingredients: Jisu (2.5 liang), Dihuangzhi (5 he), Sangbaipipi (chopped, 1 liang), Shengjiang (5 he), Gegen (chopped), Xiaoji Gen (cut), Danzhuru (each 2 liang). Coarsely grind and sieve all ingredients except Shengjiang and Dihuangzhi. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with 1.5 zhan of water until reduced to 1 zhan. Strain, add 0.5 he of Dihuangzhi and Shengjiangzhi, boil for three to five boils, strain, and take warm after meals.
Xiaoxue Powder (from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats internal injury from falls, hemoptysis, hematemesis, and abdominal blood stasis.
Ingredients: Puhuang, Danggui (cut and roasted), Ganjiang (processed), Guizhi (bark removed, 1 liang each), Mengchong (legs and wings removed, fried, 1 fen), Dahuang (steamed and chopped, 1.5 liang). Grind into powder. Take 3 qian with warm wine at any time.
Ejiao Decoction (from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats blood stasis from fractures and continuous hemoptysis.
Ingredients: Ejiao (fried dry), Shugan Dihuang (roasted), Chishaoyao, Danggui (cut and roasted), Xiong (each 1 liang), Ganjiang (processed, 0.5 liang). Coarsely grind and sieve. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with 1 zhan of water until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm at any time.
Aye Decoction (also known as Aye San, from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats injuries from falls and bumps, internal organ damage, hemoptysis, severe hematemesis, and unceasing bleeding from metal wounds.
Ingredients: Aye (fried, 0.5 liang), Baishaoyao (3 fen), Shugan Dihuang (roasted, 1 liang), Ganjiang (processed, 0.5 liang), Ejiao (fried dry, 1 liang), Gancao (honey-fried, 1 fen). An alternative formula includes Zhuru (1 fen). Coarsely sieve. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with 1 zhan of water until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm at any time.
Puhuang Decoction (from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats all types of traumatic blood stasis and frequent hemoptysis.
Ingredients: Puhuang (2 liang), Danggui (cut and roasted), Guizhi (bark removed), Renshen, Binglang (each 1 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian mixed with warm wine at any time.
Modified Xionglaotang (from *Yifang Dacheng*) treats trauma where败血 (damaged blood) flows into the stomach, causing vomiting of black blood or bean-jelly-like substance. Due to falls or sprains damaging the five Zang organs, bleeding occurs and stagnates in the stomach. Heat in the Zang leads to fresh blood vomiting; cold in the Zang leads to clotted blood vomiting. These are all internal injuries.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong, Danggui, Baishaoyao, Baihe (soaked in water for half a day), Jingjiesui (equal parts). Chop into coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with 0.5 zhan of water and 0.5 zhan of wine until reduced to 70%. Strain and take at any time.
Gancao Decoction (from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats lung Qi deficiency coughing up blood due to falls.
Ingredients: Gancao (honey-fried, 1 liang), Baifuling (black skin removed, 1 liang), Renshen (1 liang), Xingren (soaked in water, peeled, twin kernels, fried and ground, 3 fen). Coarsely grind and sieve all except Xingren, mix well. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with 1 zhan of water until reduced to 70%. Strain and take warm at any time.
Guixin Decoction (from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats internal injury from falls, hemoptysis, and abdominal blood stasis.
Ingredients: Guizhi (bark removed), Danggui (cut and roasted), Puhuang (each 1 liang), Dahuang (cut and roasted, 0.5 liang). Coarsely grind and sieve. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with 1 zhan of water until reduced to 70%. Just before finishing, add a little Dihuangzhi, mix well, strain, and take warm at any time. An alternative uses cut Danshuye instead of Zhuru.
Heishen San (from *Zhushi Jiyan Fang*) treats severe hematemesis from trauma, or excessive vomiting of blood due to bending forward after heavy drinking/wine-induced chest injury, with blood flowing from nose and mouth. Effective as long as voice remains intact.
Ingredients: Baicaoshuang, Bangfen (equal parts). Grind into powder. Take 1-2 qian mixed with rice gruel. Juice from Cebai branches is even more effective. For epistaxis, insufflate one zi; for open sores, apply dry powder.
Treatment for internal injury from falls, occasional hemoptysis, irritability, and pain (from *Sheng Hui Fang*).
Ingredients: Puhuang (1 liang), Shengdihuang (4 liang). Mash Shengdihuang in 3 he of urine from an uncircumcised boy, squeeze out juice. Mix with Puhuang in a silver vessel, simmer slowly for one boil. Divide into three doses, taken before meals.

Apply hot Shengdihuang compress, wrapping for three days and nights, changing frequently. If blood pools, puncture with a needle to drain.
Xingzhi Jiu (from *Sheng Hui Fang*) treats fall injuries and horse falls, pain, and internal blood stasis causing irritability.
Boil one handful of Xingzhi in one da sheng of water until reduced to half sheng. Add 3 he of wine. Divide into two doses. Highly effective.
