It is said that "zhang" refers to the poisonous qi of mountains and rivers. It is also said that the mist and fog in mountains and rivers often contain zhang, which is likely due to the stagnation and steaming of this qi. In various medical texts, regarding the treatment of zhang disease, the qi associated with yin, east, winter, and earth, along with the stagnant toxic qi, is particularly severe. Therefore, at this time, zhang diseases erupt vigorously. Regardless of age or constitution, whether due to excessive hunger or fullness causing injury, or wading through streams and ravines, merely breathing this air can lead to zhang disease. Its manifestations include headache and body pain, chest and diaphragm oppression and fullness, alternating chills and fever, loss of appetite, thirst and desire to drink upon onset, yellowing of the skin and swelling, and falling out of eyebrows and beard. All these are caused by the stagnation and steaming of toxic pathogens. Humans should ideally not be susceptible, yet daily consumption of betel nut is believed to help because betel nut has the property of breaking down hard accumulations and eliminating stored toxins. The treatment method involves using Cinnabar (Zhusha) first to rectify yang qi; once yin and yang qi are balanced, central fullness will naturally dissipate, followed by using Areca Seed (Binglang) to resolve remaining stagnation. The consequences of zhang disease vary: some present with chills preceding fever, others with fever preceding chills. In Lingnan, it is generally called zhang, while in Jiangbei, it is termed malaria. This arises from... [text missing] four main causes: one is mountain stream toxic vapors, two is wind... four is heat-toxin eruption, among which heat-toxin is heaviest. Therefore, the drugs used must carefully examine the source of the disease. Patients suffering from malaria-zhang may die rapidly. The reason is that zhang patients are initially deficient, and deficiency is not suitable for purgative therapy (dysentery); moreover, zhang improves with cold treatment, while dysentery worsens with warmth. Generally speaking, caution is essential. Not only medication is required, but also proper nursing and comfort are necessary. If one can... stop dysentery, warm the middle to stop diarrhea and cut off malaria, it is most excellent. If not, one must first stop dysentery, then treat zhang. When zhang is mild and dysentery is urgent, taking zhang medicine should be done before an attack, specifically on an empty stomach at dawn. After taking the medicine, do not wash hands, face, or rinse the mouth. Do not... If too much time has passed since the attack, consume a small amount of millet porridge. With such care and treatment, immediate cessation is usually achieved. During fever, if there is cold accumulation in the epigastrium, it is difficult to treat. After contracting malaria, phlegm-stasis masses may form, or qi may suddenly flare up... Vomiting is beneficial; decocted Soybean (Douchi) mixed with Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao) juice is administered, along with fresh Kudzu Root (Gegen) juice taken intermittently. Mixing and drinking Pig Manure (Zhufen) decoction as "Yellow Dragon Soup" is also effective; each can be taken 2-3 sheng. Also, crush a large... All these are effective. Crush rats, scalp, and internal organs completely; if insufficient juice, add a little water and squeeze...
