In winter, severe cold invades the body. The pathogenic cold hides in the muscles and bones, manifesting only at the Summer Solstice. This condition of high fever is called "Shu Bing" (Summerheat Disease), which is synonymous with "Re Bing" (Heat Disease). This occurs because accumulated cold qi becomes toxic upon eruption. If a pregnant woman encounters this, it often leads to miscarriage. Abnormal climatic factors injuring a pregnant woman allow heat-toxic qi to invade and damage the fetus sac, resulting in miscarriage and bleeding, thereby endangering both mother and child.
[Formulas]
**Cuisheng Tang (Labor-Inducing Decoction)**
Indicated for pregnancy complicated by heat disease lasting six to seven days, where extreme heat cooks the fetus. It treats cases where the fetus has died, the mother's body is cold, and the fetus cannot be expelled spontaneously. Warm-the-fetus herbs should be used. Although Heishen San can be used, Cuisheng Tang is superior.
Ingredients: Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Fengan (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Zhipu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex Preparata), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). [Equal parts]
**Chaihu San (Bupleurum Powder)**
Indicated for pregnancy heat disease presenting with painful and vexed joints, headache, and high fever. If untreated, it damages the fetus.
Ingredients: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Jiagen (Puerariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhiziren (Gardeniae Semen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Daqing (Isatidis Folium), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (each 3 liang). The herbs are cut into small pieces.
**Renshen San (Ginseng Powder)**
Indicated for pregnancy heat qi invading the Heart and Spleen, causing dryness and scarcity of fluids, vexation, heat obstruction, dry mouth, and thirst.
Ingredients: Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria Cum Rosa), Digupi (Lygodii Radix), Jiagen (Puerariae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xijiaoxie (Rhinocerotis Cornu Trita) (each 3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang). The herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 6 fen remains, strain, and take warm.
**Renshen Huangqi San (Ginseng and Astragalus Powder)**
*Note: Original text says "Renshen Huang San", inferred as Huangqi based on formula context.*
Indicated for pregnancy with body heat, vexation, dry mouth, and poor appetite.
Ingredients: Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Jiagen (Puerariae Radix), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (each 2 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (2 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang), Chi Fuling (Poria Cum Rosa) (1 liang). The herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, 3 slices of fresh ginger, 14 leaves of Danzhuyez (Lophatheri Herba), decoct until 6 fen remains, strain, and take warm.
**Dahuang Yinzi (Rhubarb Drink)**
Indicated for pregnancy heat disease lasting six to seven days, where heat enters the abdomen, causing constipation and difficult urination, along with vexation and heat.
Ingredients: Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria Cum Rosa) (each 3 qian), Zhiziren (Gardeniae Semen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 7 liang). *Note: Dosage discrepancy in original text (liang vs qian) preserved as per source.* The herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 0.5 liang per dose, add 1 large zhan of water, 1 fen of Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), decoct until 6 fen remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
**Heishen San (Black Divine Powder)**
*(Also known as Wu Jin San or Rougui San)*
Indicated for fetal death in utero due to heat disease. When the mother suffers from heat disease for six to seven days, extreme internal heat cooks the fetus, causing death. The dead fetus becomes cold and cannot expel itself. Taking Heishen San warms the uterus, allowing the fetus to be expelled shortly thereafter. Diagnosis of fetal death is indicated by a cyan tongue in the mother. It also treats retained blood not dispersing, alternating chills and fever.
Ingredients: Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Sheng Ganhudiyang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 1 liang), Heidou (Soybean Seed) (stir-baked, skin removed, 2 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) (0.5 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mix with warm wine on an empty stomach. Another version excludes Fuzi and uses Puhuang (Typhae Pollen).
Commentary: Pregnancy is called "Zhong Shen" (Double Life), as two lives depend on it. Improper management can damage the fetus, not only due to heat cooking but also due to falls, fright, trauma, or existing masses (Zheng Jia). Observing a cyan tongue indicates fetal death. *Yang Tai Lun* states: Cyan face and red tongue mean mother dies while fetus lives; cyan lips and salivation mean both die. Twin pregnancies may have one dead and one alive, which is hard to diagnose without careful examination near term. However, Heishen San warms the fetus by restoring the mother's righteous Qi, preventing deficiency pathogens, allowing natural expulsion. Cuisheng Tang is far superior to Heishen San.
**Gegen San (Kudzu Root Powder)**
Indicated for pregnancy of several months with chest and diaphragm vexation, dry lips and mouth, high fever in limbs, and poor appetite.
Ingredients: Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts). The herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water and a piece of Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) the size of a coin, decoct until 7 fen remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
**Zhimu San (Anemarrhena Powder)**
Indicated for pregnancy with vexation, restlessness, dry mouth, and heat in the fetus organ.
Ingredients: Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chi Fuling (Poria Cum Rosa) (each 3 fen). The herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until 7 fen remains, strain, add 1 he of Zhuli (Bambusae Sap), boil twice more, and take warm. Another version uses Zhuru instead of Zhuli.
**Renshen Yinzi (Ginseng Drink)**

Ingredients: Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia), Jiagen (Puerariae Radix) (each 1 liang), Lugeng (Phragmitis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (1.5 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (3 fen). The herbs are cut into small pieces. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water and 3 cun of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) with roots, decoct until 7 fen remains, strain, and take warm.
