The eyes are the external mansion of the Liver. If the Qi of the Zang-Fu organs is deficient and cannot ascend to nourish the eyes, the essence and brilliance will weaken. Furthermore, if attacked by pathogenic Wind, Phlegm, or Fluid retention, visual impairment will occur.
Prescriptions:
Lanshi Wan (Indigo Fruit Pill) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*]
Treats Liver Wind-Heat manifesting as blurred vision in both eyes.
Ingredients: Indigo Naturalis (*Isidis Folium*), Cassiae Semen (*Cassiae Semen*), Celosiae Semen (*Celosiae Semen*), Aurantii Fructus (*Aurantii Fructus*), Rheum Radix et Rhizoma (*Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*) [prepared], Coptidis Rhizoma (*Coptidis Rhizoma*) [cleaned], Kochiae Scopariae Herba (*Kochiae Scopariae Herba*), Chrysanthemi Flos (*Chrysanthemi Flos*), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) [roasted], Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (*Rehmanniae Radix Preparata*), Asari Radix (*Asari Radix*).
Preparation: Pound and grind the ingredients three hundred times, form pills the size of Sophora seeds (*Sophorae Fructus*) using honey.
Qingxiangzi Wan (Celosia Seed Pill) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*]
Treats obstruction by Wind-Heat causing blindness, lacrimation, and inability to see objects.
Ingredients: Celosiae Semen (*Celosiae Semen*), Cassiae Semen (*Cassiae Semen*), Plantaginis Semen (*Plantaginis Semen*), Lepidii Fructus (*Lepidii Fructus*) [stir-fried over paper until purple], Asari Radix (*Asari Radix*), Schisandrae Fructus (*Schisandrae Fructus*) [each 0.5 liang], Ophiopogonis Tuber (*Ophiopogonis Tuber*) [core removed], Cuscutae Semen (*Cuscutae Semen*) [soaked in wine].
Preparation: Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds.
Tu Gan Wan (Rabbit Liver Pill) [Source: *Qianjin Fang*]
Treats blurred vision and tearing upon exposure to cold due to damage to the Liver and Spleen.
Ingredients: Rabbit Liver (*Leporis Hepat*), Biota Seed (*Biota Semen*), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (*Rehmanniae Radix Preparata*), Poria (*Poria*), Asari Radix (*Asari Radix*) [each 1 liang], Prunus Armeniaca Kernel (*Pruni Armeniaci Semen*), Lycii Fructus (*Lycii Fructus*) [1 liang 6 zhu], Cuscutae Semen (*Cuscutae Semen*) [1 liang].
Preparation: Grind into powder, form honey pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills with warm wine twice daily; dosage may increase to 40 pills.
Shuyu San (Dioscorea Powder) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*]
Treats Liver Wind-Deficiency causing blurry vision and visual impairment.
Ingredients: Dioscoreae Rhizoma (*Dioscoreae Rhizoma*), Poria (*Poria*), Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix (*Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix*), Saposhnikoviae Radix (*Saposhnikoviae Radix*) [rhizome removed], Corni Fructus (*Corni Fructus*), Ginseng Radix (*Ginseng Radix*) [rhizome removed], Aurantii Fructus (*Aurantii Fructus*), Lycii Fructus (*Lycii Fructus*), Rubi Fructus (*Rubi Fructus*).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder; take on an empty stomach.
Chuan Shengma San (Bupleuri Radix Powder) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*]
Treats Phlegm-Excess in the Zang-Fu with Heat-Toxin rushing upward to the eyes, causing distant vision blurriness.
Ingredients: Bupleuri Radix (*Bupleuri Radix*), Aurantii Fructus (*Aurantii Fructus*) [bran-roasted], Scutellariae Radix (*Scutellariae Radix*), Rehmanniae Radix (*Rehmanniae Radix*) [each 1 liang], Pinelliae Tuber (*Pinelliae Tuber*) [washed seven times in hot water], Apricot Seed (*Armeniacae Semen Amarum*) [skin and tip removed].
Preparation: Grind into fine powder; take mixed with warm water.
Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) [Source: *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats Liver Deficiency-Cold causing blurred vision.
Ingredients: Saposhnikoviae Radix (*Saposhnikoviae Radix*) [rhizome removed], Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix (*Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix*), Dictamni Cortex (*Dictamni Cortex*) [each 1 liang], Asari Radix (*Asari Radix*) [roots and skin removed], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) [roasted], Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (*Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix*) [rhizome removed], Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (*Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*).
Preparation: Decoct with water and drink the liquid.
Huanglian Gao (Coptis Ointment) [Source: *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats blurred vision.
Ingredients: Coptidis Rhizoma (*Coptidis Rhizoma*) [cleaned, 1 liang], Prunus Armeniaca Kernel (*Pruni Armeniaci Semen*), Cassiae Semen (*Cassiae Semen*), Fraxini Cortex (*Fraxini Cortex*) [each 0.5 liang].
Preparation: Grind into powder. Decoct with 8 he of water until reduced to 3 he. Filter through silk cloth to clarify. Instill into the eyes three times daily.
Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) [Source: *Qianjin Fang*]
Treats Liver Qi Deficiency-Cold causing blindness.
Ingredients: Pearl (*Margarita*) [1 liang, ground], White Honey (*Mel Album*) [2 he], Carp Gallbladder (*Cyprini Carpio Vesica Fellea*), Yellow Croaker Gallbladder (*Larimichthys Crocea Vesica Fellea*) [each one].
Preparation: Mix well, simmer gently for two boils. Wrap in silk cloth and insert into the eye.
Cheqian Dong Wan (Plantago Winter Pill) [Source: *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats Wind-Heat above the diaphragm rushing to the eyes, causing blurred vision.
Ingredients: Plantaginis Semen (*Plantaginis Semen*), Ophiopogonis Tuber (*Ophiopogonis Tuber*) [core removed, roasted], Saposhnikoviae Radix (*Saposhnikoviae Radix*), Aurantii Fructus (*Aurantii Fructus*) [each 1 liang], Rehmanniae Radix (*Rehmanniae Radix*), Poria (*Poria*) [black skin removed, each 1 liang].
Preparation: Grind into powder, form honey pills. Take with warm water.
Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) [Source: *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats Liver Deficiency-Cold causing dim vision, blurriness, and seeing black spots.
Ingredients: Saposhnikoviae Radix (*Saposhnikoviae Radix*) [1 qian 1 fen], Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix (*Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix*), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) [roasted and cut], Poria (*Poria*) [black heart removed], Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (*Angelicae Pubescentis Radix*) [rhizome removed], Peucedani Radix (*Peucedani Radix*) [rhizome removed], Jujubae Fructus (*Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus*) [two fruits, split].
Preparation: Decoct with water and drink.
Longnao Jian (Borneol Decoction) [Source: *Shenghui Fang*]
Treats dim vision, redness and dryness, photophobia, and tearing preventing eye opening.
Ingredients: Borneolum Syntheticum (*Borneolum Syntheticum*), Realgar (*Realgar*), Prunus Armeniaca Kernel (*Pruni Armeniaci Semen*), Cupri Acetas (*Cupri Acetas*), Halitum (*Halitum*), Calomelas (*Calomelias*) [each 1 liang], Minium (*Minium*) [0.5 liang].
Preparation: Grind together for three days before use.
Zhujing Wan (Stabilizing Vision Pill) [Source: *Shengji Zonglu*]
Treats blurred vision.
Ingredients: Plantaginis Semen (*Plantaginis Semen*), Cuscutae Semen (*Cuscutae Semen*), Cassiae Semen (*Cassiae Semen*), Saiga Antler (*Saigae Tataricae Cornu*), Saposhnikoviae Radix (*Saposhnikoviae Radix*) [equal parts].
Preparation: Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take appropriate amount with warm water.
Xixin San (Asari Powder)
Treats Liver Qi Deficiency causing blurred vision, progressing to Qing Mang (Green Blindness), bluish complexion, and excessive tearing.
Ingredients: Asari Radix (*Asari Radix*), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (*Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) [each 1 liang], Prunus Armeniaca Kernel (*Pruni Armeniaci Semen*), Biota Seed (*Biota Semen*) [each 2 liang], Sheep Liver (*Ovis Aries Hepatitis*) [one].
Preparation: Grind into fine powder; take on an empty stomach with warm water.
Dansha Wan (Cinnabar Pill)
Treats blurred vision and inability to see far.
Ingredients: Cinnabar (*Cinnabaris*) [0.5 liang, finely ground], Blue Goat Gallbladder (*Capra Hircus Vesica Fellea*) [one].
Preparation: Place cinnabar powder inside the goat gallbladder. Hang in the northwest corner of a house to dry in the shade for 100 days, then process into pills.
Smoking Eye Prescription
Treats complete blindness.
Preparation: Take one fresh sheep liver, slice finely. Boil in water in a copper vessel. Place a dough cake on top, drill two holes resembling human eyes, and steam the eyes towards the holes. Do not exceed a certain duration.
Kongqing Formula
Treats blurred vision.
Preparation: Take a small amount of Azurite (*Azurite*), soak overnight in dew, and instill with water.
Another Prescription
Grind fresh rabbit liver finely and squeeze out the juice. Mix with human breast milk and instill into the eyes.
