Pulmonary asthma and rapid breathing are caused by deficiency of Qi in the Lung and Kidney, and invasion by cold-dampness, which is Yin pathogenic factor. The Lung is located above the five Zang organs, acting as a canopy; the meridian of the Kidney ascends into the Lung. Therefore, when the lower Jiao is deficient and the upper Jiao is full of excess pathogens, the airway becomes rushed and forced, Lung Qi rebels upward, leading to obstruction of the Upper Jiao, resulting in asthma and rapid breathing, and inability to lie down comfortably. Additionally, the *Neijing* states that water disease manifests as abdominal swelling below, and asthma above.
Madouling San (Caulis Aristolochiae Mollissimae Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treats pulmonary asthma and rapid breathing, where patients often cannot sit or lie down comfortably, with wheezing sounds in the throat and fullness/stuffiness in the chest and heart.
Herbs: Caulis Aristolochiae Mollissimae (Aristolochiae Mollissimae Caulis, Madouling) (3 fen), Cortex Mori Radicis (Morus Albae Cortex, Sanggenbaipi) (3 fen, sliced), Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, Hanfangji) (0.5 liang), Herba Ephedrae (Ephedrae Herba, Mahuang) (3 fen, roots and joints removed), Poria (Poria, Baifuling) (1 liang), Radix Bupleuri (Bupleuri Radix, Chaihu) (3 fen, radix removed), Radix Petasitis (Petasitae Radix, Baiqian) (0.5 liang), Pericarpium Arecae Catechui (Arecae Catechui Pericarpium, Dafupi) (3 fen, sliced), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Chenjupi) (1 liang, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried), Radix Platycodonis (Platycodonis Radix, Jiegeng) (3 fen, radix removed), Fructus Schisandrae (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, Wuweizi) (0.5 liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Gancao) (1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced), Flos Astrotanthi (Astrotanthi Flos, Ziwan) (0.5 liang, washed with decoction to remove soil and stems), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Armeniacae Semen, Xingren) (50 seeds, soaked in decoction, skin and tips removed, double kernels removed, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water, add 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, decoct until 0.6 zhong zhan remains, filter dregs. Take warm at any time. Avoid roasted/fried foods and hot noodles.
Dafupi San (Pericarpium Arecae Catechui Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treats pulmonary asthma and rapid breathing, with loss of appetite.
Herbs: Pericarpium Arecae Catechui (Dafupi, sliced), Poria cum Risso (Poria cum Ligno Quercus Rubra, Chifuling), Fructus Aurantii (Aurantii Fructus, Zhike) (stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, pith removed), Radix Platycodonis (Jiegeng, radix removed), Radix Ginseng (Ginseng Radix, Ren Shen) (radix removed), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenjupi, soaked in decoction, pith removed, dried), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Pinelliae Rhizoma, Banxia) (soaked in decoction seven times to remove slipperiness), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Chuan Dahuang) (sliced, dried, stir-fried until slightly yellow), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, soaked in decoction, skin and tips removed, double kernels removed, stir-fried), Pericarpium Terminaliae (Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium, Helilepi), Cortex Cinnamomi (Cinnamomi Cortex, Guixin) (above each 0.5 liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) (1 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and sliced).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water, decoct until 0.6 zhong zhan remains, filter dregs. Take warm at any time.
Zeqi Tang (Decoction), treats pulmonary asthma and rapid breathing, inability to sit or lie down comfortably.
Herbs: Herba Siegesbeckiae (Siegesbeckiae Herba, Zeqi) (1 liang), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sanggenbaipi, sliced), Poria cum Risso (Chifuling, black skin removed, each 1.5 liang), Flos Astrotanthi (Ziwan, soil removed, 1.5 liang), Caulis Akebiae (Akebiae Caulis, Mutong, sliced), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried, each 3 fen), Folium Perillae (Perillae Folium, Zisuye) (1 liang 1 fen), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao, honey-fried, 0.5 liang), Pericarpium Arecae Catechui cum Semine (Da Fu, including seeds, total 3 pieces).
Preparation and Administration: Slice the herbs into particles the size of hemp seeds. Divide into six doses. Add 3 zhong zhan of water and 1 fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until 2 zhong zhan remains, filter dregs. Take in three doses within one day.
Ziwan Tang (Decoction), treats pulmonary asthma, rapid breathing, cough, and chest stuffiness.
Herbs: Flos Astrotanthi (Ziwan, seedlings and soil removed), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sanggenbaipi, sliced, each 1.5 liang), Flos Farfarae (Farfarae Flos, Kuandonghua) (1 liang), Rhizoma Polygonati (Polygonati Rhizoma, Weirui) (1 liang 1 fen), Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu, seedlings removed, 1.5 liang), Radix Platycodonis (Jiegeng, stir-fried, 1 liang 1 fen), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao, honey-fried, 0.5 liang), Radix Cimicifugae (Cimicifugae Radix, Shengma) (1 liang 1 fen), Radix Belamcandae (Belamcandae Radix, Shegan) (1 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Slice the herbs into particles the size of hemp seeds. Divide into six doses. Add 3 zhong zhan of water and 1 fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until 2 zhong zhan remains, filter dregs. Take in three doses within one day.
Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) (from Yang Zijian's *Huming Fang*), treats long-standing pulmonary asthma and rapid breathing, wheezing sounds in the throat, heat accumulation in the Upper Jiao, heaviness of the body making movement difficult.
First, take medicine to resolve Upper Jiao heat:
Herbs: Radix Scutellariae (Scutellariae Radix, Huangqin, black center removed), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, skin and tips removed, double kernels removed, stir-fried), Herba Ephedrae (Mahuang, roots and joints removed, boiled in decoction, foam skimmed off, dried), Radix Notopterygii (Notopterygii Radix et Rhizoma, Qianghuo, radix removed), Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen), Radix Cimicifugae (Shengma), Radix Platycodonis (Jiegeng, stir-fried, each 3 fen), Radix Coptidis (Coptidis Rhizoma, Huanglian,须 removed, 0.5 fen), Gecko (Gecko, Haie, fried with butter, 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Crush and sieve the herbs. Take 3 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water. Boil for five boils, filter dregs. Take after meals and before bed. If not cured, continue taking the following Tingli Wan.
Tingli Wan (Descurainia Pill) (from Yang Zijian's *Huming Fang*)
Herbs: Semen Descurainiae (Descurainiae Semen, Tinglizi) (stir-fried between paper, 0.5 liang), Minium (Minium, Qiandan, finely ground), Realgar (Realgar, Pisuang) (exposed to night dew for seven nights, finely ground, stored during day), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Banxia, soaked in decoction to remove slipperiness, dried), Radix Notopterygii (Qianghuo, seedlings removed), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren, skin and tips removed, double kernels removed, stir-fried), Caulis Aristolochiae Mollissimae (Madouling) (each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Except for Realgar and Minium, grind the remaining herbs together into powder. Grind Realgar and Minium until fine as dust. Mix them into the herb powder in a mortar, pounding thousands of times until fine as dust. Form pills with date flesh, size of mung beans, coat with Cinnabar. Take 30 pills after meals with scallion tea. For those with strong constitution, increase to 50-70 pills.
Zisu San (Perilla Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treats Lung Qi stagnation with cough, attacking with asthma and irritability.
Herbs: Caulis et Folium Perillae (Zisujingye), Polyporus (Polyporus, Zhuling, black skin removed), Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenjupi, each 1 liang, soaked in decoction, white pith removed, dried), Caulis Aristolochiae Mollissimae (Madouling) (7 pieces, finely sliced like peel), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sanggenbaipi, sliced and scraped coarse skin off), Radix Ophiopogonis (Ophiopogonis Radix, Maidong), Pericarpium Arecae Catechui (Dafupi, sliced), Poria cum Risso (Chifuling, skin removed), Fructus Aurantii (Zhike, each 1 liang, stir-fried with bran until yellow, pith removed).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above herbs into powder. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1 zhong zhan of water, add 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, decoct until 0.6 zhong zhan remains, filter dregs. Take warm at any time.
Puxiao Wan (Mirabilite Pill) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treats pulmonary asthma and rapid breathing, inability to lie down, regardless of day or night, only able to sit leaning on objects, eating only thin porridge.
Taking this medicine, shortness of breath will reduce on the same day. After 3-5 days, one can lie steadily with head on pillow, urination will become smooth, Qi in heart and intestines will dissipate. After 20 days, recovery as before. Also treats various...
Herbs: Mirabilite (Puxiao), Thenardite (Mangxiao) (heated, each 2 liang), Niter (Xiaoshi) (1 liang, ground with the above two), Rhinoceros Horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu, Xijiao, shaved), Seed Capsici (Capsici Fructus Seed, Jiaomu) (slightly stir-fried, ground together into powder, each 1 liang), Semen Hyoscyami (Hyoscyami Semen, Langdangzi) (washed to remove floating ones, boiled dry, stir-fried black), Semen Descurainiae Sweet (Tian Tingli) (stir-fried between paper until purple, each 0.5 liang), Semen Pruni Armeniacae (Xingren) (soaked in decoction, skin and tips removed, double kernels removed, stir-fried with bran, 2 liang, pounded into paste with the above two).
Preparation and Administration: Grind each uniformly. Mix with date flesh, pound 300-500 times. Form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 15 pills with date decoction at any time.
Shuijiao San (Water Gum Powder), treats chronic Lung labor injury, suffering from asthma and rapid breathing, inability to sit or lie down, thick and sticky saliva.
