After childbirth, the yin blood is deficient. If proper care is neglected, yang qi becomes excessive, causing an imbalance between yin and yang. Symptoms include bodily restlessness and oppression, dryness of the lips and mouth, and fatigue and pain in the limbs and joints. This condition is referred to as postpartum deficiency-heat (Chanhou Xu Re).
Formulas:
Baizi Ren Wan (Platycladi Seed Pill): Treats postpartum deficiency-heat, emaciation, and exhaustion; it tonifies and nourishes.
Ingredients: Baizi Ren (Seed of Platycladi Orientalis, stir-fried), Zelan Ye (Leaf of Lychnis Chinesis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparatae, roasted and crushed), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and dried), Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) [each 1 liang]; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, bark removed, heart taken and dried) [each 1 liang].
Dosage: Take 30 qianbi (a small measure) per dose. Boil with one sheng (unit of volume) of water... (text missing here, typically implies decocting to a specific volume), remove dregs, and take warm.
Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction): Treats postpartum deficiency-heat that persists for a long time, gradually developing into consumption-labor qi (Lao Qi).
Ingredients: Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, stems removed), Shenggan Dihuang (Dried Radix Rehmanniae, baked), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and dried), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens).
Shaoyao Tang (Paeonia Decoction): Treats postpartum deficiency-heat, irritability and fatigue in the bone joints, and emaciation.
Ingredients: Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae, crushed), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) [each 1 liang]; Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1.5 liang); Jiangjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, processed, 0.5 liang); BaiFuling (Poria with Wood Removed, black skin removed, 1 liang).
Preparation: Crush the herbs. Take 3 qianbi per dose. Boil with one sheng of water... (text missing), remove dregs, and take warm.
Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats unresolved postpartum deficiency-heat, irritability, fatigue, weakness, and physical exhaustion.
Ingredients: Shugan Dihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, baked), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, cracked, skin and umbilicus removed), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and dried) [each 1 liang]; Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, stems removed, 3 fen; another prescription uses 1 liang); Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang); Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae, 3 liang? Text ambiguous).
Preparation: Crush the herbs and decoct in water.
Guixin Tang (Cinnamon Heart Decoction): Treats postpartum deficiency-heat resembling consumption-labor qi, with emaciation and weakness.
Ingredients: Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, bark removed, 1 liang), Huangqi (Radix Astragali, crushed, 1 liang); Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 1 liang); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and dried, 0.5 liang); Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, crushed, 1.5 liang); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparatae, roasted); Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 3 slices).
Preparation: Crush the herbs and decoct in water.
Danggui Tang (Angelica Decoction): Treats postpartum blood deficiency with intense heat in the limbs, restlessness, oppression, physical exhaustion, and loss of appetite.
Ingredients: Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and dried), Huangqi (Radix Astragali, crushed), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae) [each 1.5 liang]; Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, bark removed); Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparatae, roasted); Renshen (Radix Ginseng); Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, stems removed).
Preparation: Crush the herbs and decoct in water.
Xiangchi Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction): Treats postpartum debility and emaciation, with withered muscles and weak limbs.
Ingredients: Chi (Folium Sojae Preparatum, 0.5 liang); Zhu Shen (Porcinus Ren, one kidney, fat membrane removed, cut into four pieces); Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, sliced and dried, 0.5 liang); Congbai (Scallion White, three stalks, chopped); Renshen (Radix Ginseng); Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, bark removed).
Preparation: Crush the herbs, add the pig kidney, and decoct in water.
Shaoyao Tang (Paeonia Decoction): Treats postpartum deficiency-heat, restlessness, and emaciation.
Ingredients: Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae, 1 liang); Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 0.5 liang); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparatae, roasted); Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, bark removed) [each 1 liang]; Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, black skin removed, 1 liang).
Preparation: Crush the herbs, decoct in water, remove dregs, and take warm.
Shuqi Tang (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats alternating postpartum deficiency-heat, chest and heart restlessness, pain in all bone joints, headache, and high fever, which worsens in the late afternoon (Bu Shi).
Ingredients: Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, noted as "Mu" in text), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae) [each 2 liang]; Shuqi Ye (Leaf of Paederia Scandens); Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparatae, roasted); Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cordata); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) [each 1 liang]; Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, 1 jin).
This decoction treats the above symptoms.
Shaoyao Tang (from *Qianjin Fang*, also known as Guixin Muli San): Treats postpartum deficiency-heat, headache, body fever, and abdominal cramping pain.
Ingredients: Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cordata, 3 liang); Muli (Concha Ostreae); Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba); Shenggan Dihuang (Dried Radix Rehmanniae) [each 5 liang]; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 2 liang. *Qianjin Yi Fang* states: if there is fever throughout the body, add Huangqin).
Preparation: Crush the herbs and decoct in water to relieve abdominal pain.
Baxian Tang (Eight Immortals Decoction): Treats restlessness. Restlessness is caused by deficiency-heat. Blood and qi have yin and yang aspects; zang-fu organs have deficiency and excess conditions. Excess generates heat, while deficiency generates cold. Frequent bloating and warmth indicate deficiency-heat. This is due to qi deficiency causing restlessness.
