The manifestations of Luoli (scrofula, lymphatic tuberculosis) generally fall into three categories. The first is Wind Toxin, caused by wind pathogenic factors; the second is Qi Toxin, caused by qi stagnation; and the third is Heat Toxin, caused by heat pathogenic factors. Generally speaking, when wind, qi, and heat accumulate and stagnate, causing obstruction and stasis in the meridians, they can all knot together in the head, neck, chest, and axilla to form Luoli. The nodules are hard and resemble a string of pearls. They swell, ulcerate, and generate sores. If left untreated, it will transform into severe Luoli syndrome, causing chills and fever, emaciation, and wasting.
