The condition of Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea) arises from the dysfunction of ascending and descending mechanisms in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), causing turbid and clear qi to interfere with each other within the intestines and stomach. If heart pain occurs first, vomiting ensues; if abdominal pain occurs first, diarrhea follows.
Various symptoms of aversion to wind and cold, whether accompanied by sweating or not, along with severe summer-heat, vexation, and toxicity, belong to external causes. Generally speaking, injury by wind leads to aversion to wind with sweating, while injury by cold leads to aversion to cold without sweating. Dampness in the stomach causes heaviness, while summer-heat causes fever and vexation. Although this is a standard theory, during the sudden onset of Huoluan, it is difficult to distinguish quickly, leading to diagnostic errors that disrupt meridians and violate normal patterns, causing significant harm.
Excessive joy injures the Heart, causing Qi to scatter; excessive anger injures the Liver, causing Qi to rebel upwards; sorrow injures the Lungs, causing Qi to retreat; fright injures the Gallbladder, causing Qi to become chaotic. Phlegm-fluids stagnate and accumulate, causing blockage in the Zang-Fu organs, resulting in distension and oppression. Depending on the fluctuation of excess and deficiency, vomiting and diarrhea will inevitably occur. Treatment should focus on internal causes.
Overeating fried meats and rich foods, indulging in dairy products, delicacies from land and water, preserved meats and mixed dishes, drinking cold beverages excessively, forcing strong wines, and indulging in sexual desires without restraint [injure the Spleen and Stomach].
Huoluan with tendon spasms occurs because the Yangming Meridian nourishes the tendons and belongs to the Stomach and Large Intestine. Now, due to sudden violent vomiting, body fluids are instantly depleted, external invasion of the four climatic factors, and internal accumulation of seven emotions [lead to malnourishment of the tendons].
*Rumen Shiqin* states: What is the name for a disease involving both vomiting and diarrhea? *Neijing: Re Lun* states: This is the syndrome of tendon-spasm Huoluan. What qi causes this? How should the disease of tendon spasms be treated? The classics state: "For exhaustion, use warming." Here, "warming" implies a gentle, nurturing warmth. Another method: Ginger Decoction, Yi Yuan Powder, Baizhu Powder, Yugong Powder, added with ice crystals, taken slowly sip by sip. If thirst persists, drink frequently. If ice is unavailable, fresh well water can also be used. White rice porridge soup is strictly forbidden. Dry and hot medicines such as Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fuzi (Aconite Root) must not be taken; taking them will certainly lead to death. In places where medicine is unavailable, Earth Slurry (Dijiang) can be taken. Dig a pit, pour in fresh water, stir until muddy, and take immediately.
