Pungent, warm, and toxic. *Bencao Gangmu* records it as sweet and cool, which is incorrect. Horses' hooves do not have "night eyes" (eyes that glow at night); horses with white coats and black heads, or white coats with greenish hooves, should not be eaten.
Meat from under the saddle is lethal if consumed, and horse liver is also inedible because injuries inflicted by whips tend to accumulate in the liver. If one suffers from severe poisoning after eating horse meat, take two liang of fermented soybeans (Xiangchi) and two liang of apricot seeds (Xingren), steam them until cooked, pound them into powder, and ingest. Alternatively, decoct rhizoma phragmitis (Lugen) juice and drink it.
[Invention] According to: *Lingshu Jing* states that sudden facial paralysis with stiffness causes the eyes to remain open; heat causes flaccidity of the sinews. If the eyes cannot open, it is because cold in the cheek sinews causes stiffness, pulling the mouth corner. Heat causes relaxation and inability to control the muscles, resulting in deviation. Treatment involves using horse fat (Magao) applied to the stiff side of the cheek to soothe it, and a mixture of white wine and cinnamon twig (Guizhi) applied to the relaxed side. Use a mulberry wood hook for traction. Place hot ashes from raw mulberry wood in a pit, adjusted to the height of a sitting person. Apply horse fat compresses to the stiff cheek while drinking fine wine and eating roasted meat. Those who do not drink alcohol should force themselves to do so. Perform three manipulations (fupai). The world largely ignores the efficacy of this prescription. I believe facial deviation is caused by wind pathogen invading the vessels. The Yangming meridians of the hand and foot traverse the mouth, and the Taiyang meridian converges at the eyes. Cold causes sinew stiffness and deviation; heat causes sinew flaccidity. Thus, cold on the left forces heat to the right, and cold on the right forces heat to the left. Cold causes stiffness, heat causes flaccidity. On the stiff side, the skin is numb and obdurate, with stagnant Ying and Wei qi. The treatment principle is: soothe the stiff, and tighten the flaccid. Therefore, use the sweet, neutral, soft, and soothing properties of horse fat to massage the stiff area, moisten the obstruction, and unblock the blood vessels. Use the pungent, hot, and binding nature of cinnamon wine to apply to the flaccid area, to restrain flaccidity, harmonize Ying and Wei, and unblock the meridians. Mulberry treats wind-bi and unblocks joint orifices. For diseases in the upper body, wine promotes circulation, and sweetness assists. Hence, the instruction to drink fine wine and eat roasted meat. Horse sclera (white part of the eye) treats epilepsy attacks; it is used in *Qianjin Fang*. Eating horse heart leads to forgetfulness. Eating horse lung causes alternating chills and fever, and impotence. Meat from under the saddle damages the five zang organs. Horse milk dispels wind and relieves thirst. White horse hooves: *Shennong Bencao Jing* indicates they treat fright evil, convulsions (Chouyu), difficult lactation, and ward off ghostly qi, poison, gu-zhu, and misfortune. *Bielu* indicates they stop epistaxis, internal collapse, and tooth decay. White horses treat leukorrhea (white beng) in women; red horses treat metrorrhagia (red beng) in women. Horse hair treats pediatric convulsions and menorrhagia (red and white discharge), used according to color. Ashed horse hair stops bleeding and applies to malignant sores. Horse tail treats menorrhagia and infantile fright illness (Kewu). White horse penis: *Shennong Bencao Jing* indicates it treats injury to the middle jiao and severed pulses, impotence, strengthens will, benefits qi, promotes muscle growth, and aids fertility. Wild horse penis causes impotence when consumed. Wild horse meat causes "horse epilepsy," where sinews and vessels lose self-control. Horse urine is slightly cold and mildly toxic; it effectively treats zheng-jia masses. It can also treat regurgitation with worm accumulation. Ulcers penetrating flesh and bone are toxic and harmful. Baked horse manure is used in wind-bi medicinal wines for its penetrating ability to reach the disease site directly. Horse dung (Matong) stops bleeding and detoxifies. *Qianjin Fang* and Mei Shi's formulas use it for hematemesis and epistaxis. *Zhouhou Fang* uses it for stroke with persistent vomiting and diarrhea. *Jingyan Fang* uses it for intestinal colic with severe abdominal pain; all involve administering fresh juice. Additionally, *Zhouhou Fang* uses ashed dung for chronic dysentery with red and white discharge. *Shenghui Fang* uses it for post-febrile recurrence due to overexertion after typhoid; both involve ingesting ash. *Qianjin Fang* uses hot horse manure poultices for bone and tendon trauma. It is also used for traumatic swelling and pain via smoke fumigation. *Shenghui Fang* uses heated stir-fried horse manure compresses for carbuncles, wind-cold, and painful swelling. *Lingshu* mentions placing pepper, ginger, cinnamon, and wine in horse manure to enhance the efficacy of all medicines. Currently, people use smoked horse manure to kill bedbugs and lice effectively. Heart palpitations caused by eating horse meat are resolved by drinking fine wine but exacerbated by turbid wine.
