Question: The disease of Huang Han (Yellow Sweat) presents with body swelling and heaviness, sweating accompanied by fever and thirst, resembling Feng Shui (Wind-Water Edema). The sweat stains clothes yellow like cypress juice, and the pulse is naturally deep. How is this disease acquired? The Master said: It is acquired when one enters water for bathing while sweating, allowing water qi to enter through the sweat pores. It should be treated with Huangqi Shaoyao Guizhi Tang (Astragalus, Peony, and Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Huangqi Shaoyao Guizhi Tang (Astragalus, Peony, and Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 5 liang, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 liang, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 3 liang.
The above three herbs are combined with 1 sheng of Ku Jiu (bitter wine/vinegar) and 7 sheng of water, boiled to obtain 3 sheng of liquid. Strain and take 1 sheng warm. One should experience mental restlessness after taking it, which resolves after 6-7 days. If mental restlessness persists, it is due to the obstruction by Ku Jiu; replace it with Mei Jiu Zao (wine lees from fine wine).
In the disease of Huang Han (Yellow Sweat), the calves feel cold. If they feel hot instead, it belongs to Li Jie (Joint Bi Syndrome). Sweating after eating and night sweats in the evening indicate heat in Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi). If fever persists after sweating, the body will eventually develop Jia Cuo (rough, scaly skin). If fever continues indefinitely, malignant sores will eventually develop. If the body feels heavy and lightens after sweating, but eventually leads to eyelid edema (Yun Yan) associated with chest pain, or if there is sweating above the waist and no sweating below, with flaccid pain in the loins and hips as if something is trapped in the skin, severe cases may involve inability to eat, body pain and heaviness, irritability, and difficulty in urination. This is Huang Han (Yellow Sweat), treated with Guizhi Jia Huangqi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Plus Astragalus Decoction).

The above six herbs are decocted in 8 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of liquid. Strain and take 1 sheng warm, three times daily.
The Cun Kou (Radial) pulse is deep and weak. Deep indicates bone pathology, weak indicates tendon pathology. Deep corresponds to the Kidney, and weak corresponds to the Liver. Entering water while sweating allows water pathogen to damage the Heart, leading to Li Jie (Joint Bi Syndrome) pain and Huang Han (Yellow Sweat), hence named Li Jie.
Sour taste damages tendons; tendon damage leads to laxity, named Xie (Leakage). Salty taste damages bones; bone damage leads to atrophy, named Ku (Withered). The combination of Ku and Xie is named Duan Xie (Severed Leakage). When Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) circulation is blocked and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) cannot move independently, both Ying and Wei become deficient, the San Jiao (Triple Burner) loses its defense, and the four extremities are cut off from nourishment. The body becomes emaciated, while only the feet swell. With Huang Han (Yellow Sweat) and heat in the calves, it becomes Li Jie (Joint Bi Syndrome).
In Shao Yin (Lesser Yin) disease, the pulse is floating and weak. Weakness indicates blood deficiency, and floating indicates wind. Wind and blood fighting each other causes pulling pain.
In obese individuals, the pulse is choppy and small, accompanied by shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating, Li Jie (Joint Bi Syndrome) pain, and inability to flex or extend the joints. These are all caused by sweating after drinking alcohol and exposing oneself to wind.
For various joint pains, emaciation, swollen feet as if detached, dizziness, shortness of breath, and a feeling of warmth with nausea, Gui Zhi Shao Yao Zhi Mu Gan Cao Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Peony, Anemarrhena, and Licorice Decoction) is indicated.

For a deep, thin, and rapid pulse, Yuespi Jia Zhu Tang (Yuebi Plus Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) is indicated. (Both formulas are seen previously).
The Master said: The Cun Kou (Radial) pulse is slow and choppy. Slow indicates cold, choppy indicates blood deficiency. The Zu Yang (Dorsalis Pedis) pulse is faint and slow. Faint indicates Qi deficiency, slow indicates cold. Insufficient Stomach Qi leads to cold hands and feet. Disharmony of Ying and Wei leads to abdominal fullness and borborygmus, with Qi moving to the Bladder, causing exhaustion of Ying and Wei. Obstruction of Yang Qi causes body coldness; obstruction of Yin Qi causes bone pain. Anterior unblocking of Yang causes aversion to cold; anterior unblocking of Yin causes numbness and insensitivity. When Yin and Yang harmonize, Qi flows. When the Great Qi rotates, cold dissipates. Excess manifests as flatulence; deficiency manifests as urinary incontinence. This is named Qi Fen (Qi Division/Disease).
Qi Fen (Qi Disease) presents with hardness under the heart, large as a plate, with edges like a rotating cup. It is treated with Guizhi Gancao Mahuang Shengjiang Dazao Xixin Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Ephedra, Ginger, Jujube, Asarum, and Prepared Aconite Decoction).

The above two herbs are pounded into powder. Take 1 cun chi spoonful mixed with Jiangshui (fermented grain wash), three times daily.
The Master said: Patients with pale complexion, no chills or fever, and a deep, string-taut pulse will likely suffer epistaxis. Those with a floating, weak pulse that disappears upon pressure will likely suffer lower bleeding. Those with irritability and cough will likely suffer hematemesis.
Epistaxis from spring to summer belongs to Tai Yang (Greater Yang). Epistaxis from autumn to winter belongs to Yang Ming (Bright Yang).
Floating Chi (Cubit) pulse and blurred vision with yellow tint indicate ongoing epistaxis. When the yellow tint disappears and vision clears, epistaxis has stopped.
Question: Cun Kou (Radial) pulse is slightly floating and choppy, indicating blood loss or sweating. If sweating does not occur, what is the cause? The Master said: If there is a wound from knives or axes, it is due to blood loss, named Jin Chuang (Metal Wound). Without pus, Wangbuliuxing San (Lycium Barbarum Seed Powder) is indicated.
