At the initial onset of this eye condition, it is caused by the wet nurse consuming excessive amounts of damp noodles, alcohol, vinegar, and other foods that cause toxin accumulation after the infant's birth. This results in both eyes of the child becoming completely red, with discharge obscuring the canthi, accompanied by redness and ulceration. This condition is termed "Fetal Wind" (Tai Feng). When the child grows to about fifteen years of age, it is essential to scrape and wash the area until bleeding occurs, administer Huangqin Yinzi (Coptis Decoction), and apply Ruiren Gao (Buckthorn Ointment) for recovery.
The poem states:
In swaddling clothes, both eyes are entirely red; if physicians wish to identify it, they call it Fetal Wind.
The infant's wet nurse swallows various heat-inducing substances, which secretly infiltrate and lodge within the five zang organs initially.
When itching arises, rubbing with hands cannot be restrained; external wind then easily invades and rushes in.
A skilled physician first uses Tongwan San (Unblocking Pill and Powder), then applies Ruiren ointment to attack from within the orbital region.
Medicinal intake should be adjusted according to cold or heat conditions at the time; using a Pi Lian (scalpel/scraping tool) to sever stasis cuts off the root of the disease.
Otherwise, what will the condition look like later? Inverted eyelashes and curled hairs will persist for a lifetime.
Huangqin Yinzi (Coptis Decoction)
Huangqin (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 liang), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 liang), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Huangqin (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1.5 liang).
Crush the above into powder. Take one qian of powder with one zhan of water, decoct until half remains (five fen), remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
Ruiren Gao (Buckthorn Ointment)
Ruiren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed, 5 qian), Shidan (Melanterium, a small amount), Huangla (Beeswax, a small amount), Xiaamayou (Sesame Oil, a small amount), Nifen (Calomel, a small amount).
Crush and grind the above until fine as powder. Then place oil and wax in a porcelain bowl, slowly heat to form an ointment, and apply to the eyes.
At the initial onset of this eye condition, there may be immediate itching and pain, with irregular intervals of onset and remission, or excessive tearing. Subsequently, sores may appear on the eyelid flesh, with the four corners resembling the color of cinnabar. Gradually, membranous nebulae form, obstructing the pupil. This is due to toxic wind and heat accumulating in the spleen and lodging in the diaphragm, causing the eye disease. It is inadvisable to apply eye drops or moxibustion to the head and face, as this may damage the eyes. It is appropriate to administer Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction) and Zhuige Wan (Diaphragm-Descending Pills) for immediate effect.
The poem states:
Wind-redness originates from the spleen house; sores arise on the face and eyelids resembling cinnabar.
If the black pearl (cornea/pupil) remains clean, it is not yet a major issue, but after two years, nebulae will still come to obscure vision.
Light nebulae can be temporarily cleared by dropping medicine; those who know praise the use of the hook-sickle (metaphor for radical treatment).
If one relies on cauterization to retreat the pathogen, removing the root cause becomes a distant journey.
Xiegan Tang (Liver-Draining Decoction)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Huangqin (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fuling (Poria, 1 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 liang), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus, 2 liang), Heishen (Black Ginseng, 1.5 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Take one qian of powder with one zhan of water, decoct until half remains (five fen), remove dregs, and take warm after meals.
Zhuige Wan (Diaphragm-Descending Pills)
Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 liang), Gan Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 1 liang), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 liang), Shijueming (Argonautae Ossa, 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1.5 liang).
Grind the above into powder, refine honey, and make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take ten pills with tea on an empty stomach.
