This text primarily discusses two types of eye diseases resulting from sequelae of Tianxing Chiyan (epidemic conjunctivitis): one is "Chiyan Waizhang after Tianxing" (red eye external obstruction following epidemic conjunctivitis), and the other is "Baochiyan Hou Ji Sheng Yi Waizhang" (sudden onset of nebula external obstruction after acute red eye).
First condition: When this eye disease first occurs, there is sudden redness, swelling, and tearing. If a patient is affected, the severity may be mild or severe. It typically begins in one eye and subsequently spreads to involve both eyes. It is essential to use a lancet to release blood and wash away stasis. Afterwards, it is advisable to take Xiegan San (Drain Liver Powder), use Xiyan Tang (Eye Washing Decoction), and apply Longnao Jian (Borneol Ointment) for immediate effect.
The poem states:
Sudden redness, pain, and swelling occur together; this Tianxing Chiyan has its specific name. The pathogenic heat of Li Zhu (likely referring to a specific environmental factor or plant associated with the epidemic) transmits contagiously. Depending on the constitution, the severity varies.
One must drink Xiegan Tang Yin (Drain Liver Decoction). The released blood from the eyelids appears as tiny stars. Wash the eyes with Qinpi Tang (Qinpi Decoction) and swallow the pills. If not treated promptly, Yu Yi (jade-like nebula) will form over years.
One must avoid toxic foods and undergo proper dietary regulation and treatment. There is no need for hook cauterization, which might damage the eyeball. If analgesic drops are forcibly applied, it will damage Shen Guang (spiritual light/vision), which is truly alarming.
What is the most stable approach in medical treatment? Consuming more cooling medicines brings the body to a balanced state. As the nebula dissipates, the efficacy of good dispersing methods will naturally manifest.
Xiegan San (Drain Liver Powder)
Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 1.5 liang); Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Hei Shen (Adenophorae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Chong Wei Zi (Erythrostemonis Semen) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one sheng of water, decoct until five fen remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Xiyan Tang (Eye Washing Decoction)
Qin Pi (Fraxini Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 liang); Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (1.5 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the above ingredients. Take three qian of the powder with one sheng of water, decoct until one and a half sheng remains. Wash the eyes while hot, twice daily, for immediate effect.
Longnao Jian (Borneol Ointment)
Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (1 fen); Qin Pi (Fraxini Cortex), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xuan Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 1.5 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the above ingredients. Soak the powder in a large bowl of water for three days and nights. Decoct in a silver pot until seven parts remain. Filter through silk cotton to remove dregs. Add four liang of honey and boil for five to seven boils. Store in a porcelain bottle, ensuring it is airtight. Apply to the eyes each time for immediate effect.
Second condition: When this eye disease first occurs, there is sudden redness and swelling of the Bai Jing (white of the eye), along with tearing, itching, or pain. This is caused by stagnation and toxicity of the Liver and Heart accumulating between the chest and diaphragm, mutually agitating and triggering an upward rush of visceral qi, resulting in these symptoms. It is essential to use a lancet to release blood and wash it away. Afterwards, drinking Lugenyin Zi (Reed Root Drink) and Zhen Wan (Settle Liver Pill) yields immediate results.
The poem states:
Sudden onset of redness in the white of the eye; mild cases are harmless, severe cases cause pain. It is definitely heat in the Liver and Heart viscera. One must vent and drain, preventing the pathogens from attacking each other.
Lugenyin Zi must promote unblocking and draining, lest the condition recur later. Swallow half a dose of Zhen Gan pills and powders; such treatment possesses divine efficacy.
Lugenyin Zi (Reed Root Drink)
Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) (each 1 liang); Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Hei Shen (Adenophorae Radix) (each 1.5 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the above ingredients. Take one qian of the powder with one sheng of water, decoct until five fen remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
Zhen Gan Wan (Settle Liver Pill)
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha) (each 2 liang); Ben Cao (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix) (1.5 liang); Gan Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the above ingredients. Form pills using refined honey, sized like tung tree seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with tea.
