The pulse of malaria naturally presents as a *Xian* (Wiry) pulse. A wiry and rapid pulse indicates excess heat, while a wiry and slow pulse indicates excess cold. A wiry, floating, and large pulse suggests the use of emetic therapy; a short pulse indicates food stagnation; and a slippery pulse indicates excessive phlegm-dampness. A faint pulse signifies deficiency, whereas a choppy (*Dai*) or scattered pulse indicates a fatal prognosis. A slow and moderate pulse suggests recovery.
*Ru Men* states: When Wei-Qi (Defensive Qi) is deficient, chills appear first; when Ying-Qi (Nutritive Qi) is deficient, fever appears first. When pathogenic factors in the exterior are predominant, chills are more severe; when pathogenic factors in the interior are predominant, fever is more severe. When exterior and interior pathogens are equal, chills and fever are of equal intensity.
