Lin: Due to unfulfilled deliberations, the Gallbladder Qi stagnated and generated fire. In spring, redness and swelling appeared around the eye sockets, accompanied by palpitations, thirst, yellow urine, and delirious perceptions (hallucinations or misperceptions of sights and sounds). The pulse was surging and rapid. Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction) was used, with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) removed, and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chifuling (Poria cum Ligno Rubrum), and Sheng Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen Crude) added. After two doses, the condition stabilized; subsequently, a harmonizing formula was administered, leading to recovery.
Liu: Of advanced age, he experienced chest fullness, with Qi counterflowing upward from the Lower Jiao. He felt hungry but had no appetite. This was certainly caused by disease arising from depression and anger. The Right Guan pulse (corresponding to Spleen/Stomach) was floating and long, exceeding its normal position; both Chi pulses (corresponding to Kidney) were forceful and large, clearly indicating rebellious Qi failing to descend. With Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) governing the season, this presentation raised concern for Ge Ye (dysphagia/obstruction) and vomiting of saliva/phlegm. Formula: Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Gualou Pi (Trichosanthis Pericarpium), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Suzi (Perillae Fructus), Qingpi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus Pericarpium), Jiangxiang Mo (Sappanwood Powder), Yuliren (Prunus Persica Seed). Several doses yielded efficacy.
Sui: Postprandial epigastric fullness and vomiting of sour fluid, dry mouth, epistaxis, and menstruation occurring only once every four months. The illness persisted for ten years, extending from the Qi level to the Blood level. This resulted from Liver Qi stagnation and failure to disperse, causing turbid Qi to ascend and Blood to rebel upwards, carrying the burden of lifelong infertility. Formula: Sheng Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus, stir-fried with Coptidis decoction), Heishanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus Carbonized), Fuling (Poria), Suzi (Perillae Fructus), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Zelan (Lycopus Herba). After several doses, fullness and vomiting gradually decreased. Xiangfu and Wuyu were removed, and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizoma, all wine-fried), and Jiaomu (Zanthoxyli Semen) were added. After several doses, menstruation occurred. Then, Jujupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Muxiang juice were added, and the aforementioned herbs were modified into pills. The condition gradually stabilized.
Wang: Having suffered from illness for a long time with deep-seated depression, the pulse was fine, choppy, and lacking spirit, especially on the Left side. Symptoms included vomiting sour fluid, food distension, and discomfort of Stomach Yang. Pain in the left ear and neck extended to the hairline. Deficient Yang attacked upward, and Gallbladder Qi overflowed horizontally. Liver Wood stagnation led to Spleen Earth decline, inevitably resulting in constipation and menstrual obstruction. Wu Zhu Yu Tang (Evodia Decoction) was used, with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) removed, and Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Ju Bai (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Album), Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos), Gouteng (Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis), and Nen Sangye (Mori Folium Tender) added. Three doses brought great comfort. Wu Zhu Yu was removed, and Guya (Setariae Fructus Germinatus), Yizhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) were added. After several more doses, various symptoms gradually disappeared.
Xie: A tumor the size of a bowl formed in the right axilla due to Qi stagnation. Menstruation occurred early; upon onset, whole-body pulling pain ensued. The condition persisted for ten years without conception. Symptoms included dizziness, leukorrhea, postprandial vomiting of sour fluid, and a sinking, wiry pulse. The pathology arose from prolonged depression injuring the Liver, causing Liver Meridian Qi rebellion, generating Wind-Fire, disturbing Blood, shaking collaterals, losing the descending function of Fu organs, presenting with vomiting, vertigo, turbid rebellion, disharmony of Ying and Wei, and obstruction/bi syndrome in the pulse channels. Treatment employed the method of simultaneously unblocking the Jueyin and Yangming meridians. Formula: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, both stir-fried with Ginger juice), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma, prepared with child's urine), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Yujin (Curcumae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Juluo (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Fibra), Sigualuo (Luffae Fructus Retinervus). Several doses reduced symptoms. Subsequently, Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Plus Ingredients Powder) was used, with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) removed, and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) plus Yujin juice added, combined with Jiao Ai Tang (Donkey-Hide Gelatin and Mugwort Decoction). After several doses, menstruation gradually regulated.
Zou: Following the grief and depression over the loss of her daughter, she gradually developed hypochondriac fullness. Distension worsened after eating, phlegm-turbidity failed to descend, she vomited bitter fluid, had loose stools, and presented with a deficient, slow pulse. This was sorrow and depression damaging Yang, causing Qi obstruction and turbid accumulation. Treatment focused on draining Liver heat and warming Stomach Yang. Modeled after Wu Zhu Yu Tang: Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, each 0.5 qian), Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Fuling (Poria, each 2 qian), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Sharen Ke (Amomi Fructus Pericarpium), Ju Bai (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Album), Wuyao (Linderae Radix, each 0.8 fen). Three doses stopped vomiting, relieved distension, and improved appetite. The regimen changed to unblocking the Fu organs and promoting dampness drainage. Formula: Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium, washed, 2 qian), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 0.5 fen), Banxia Qu (Pinelliae Fermentum, 0.8 fen), Jiaomu (Zanthoxyli Semen, 15 grains), Fuling (Poria, 2 qian), Sharen Ke (Amomi Fructus Pericarpium, 0.8 fen), Wei Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum, 1.5 qian). Several doses brought stability.
