(Continuing from the previous text) Add Lotus Node (Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Nodus), Black Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus), and Biota Tops (Biotae Cacumen). After two doses, symptoms improved slightly. Subsequently, add Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 2 qian, Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 qian, and Peach Kernels (Persicae Semen) 30 grains (without removing skin and sharp ends), ground into a paste. Take for two doses. Dark blood is passed in stool three to five times. The chest and hypochondrium suddenly feel relaxed. Thereafter, modify Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction) and regulate for one month until recovery.
Use the Box-Navels method to absorb heat toxins. Next, use Wei Feng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction) added with Myristica Seed (Myristicae Semen), Coptis Rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Sanguisorba Root (Sanguisorbae Radix), decocted and taken with Xiang Lian Wan (Fragrant Coptis Pill). After two doses, dysentery stops. Then use a large dose of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with three times the amount of Lablab Bean (Lablab Album), along with Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix), Chinese Yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), and Turtle Shell (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum). After several doses, malaria stops. Finally, decoct Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Angelica Sinensis into a paste for regulation, leading to full recovery.
A woman in her thirties suffered from asthma and coughing, with急促 breathing and phlegm obstruction, unable to lie down day or night. She had three to five episodes per year, worsening upon exposure to cold. I initially prescribed Ephedra Stem (Ephedrae Herba), Gypsum Fibrosum (Gypsum), Apricot Kernel (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Fritillaria Bulb (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Perilla Leaf (Perillae Folium), Green Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Aurantium Fruit (Aurantii Fructus), Platycodon Root (Platycodi Radix), Thistle Seed (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen), and Greater Burdock Fruit (Magnoliae Fructus). After four doses, phlegm and wheezing subsided. Then, use Bao He Tang (Preserve Harmony Decoction) modified for over ten doses. Later, take Qing Fei Wan (Clear Lung Pill) and Zhen Bai Wan (True White Pill) on an empty stomach and before bed, half a portion each, completely curing the root cause.
A man in his forties suffered from Taiyang disease (Exterior Syndrome of the Taiyang Channel). After five or six days, improper sweating and purging led to severe coughing and reversal of qi, near death, abdominal urgency, extreme thirst, loose stools, scanty and difficult urination, and slippery-rapid pulse in all six positions, indicating heat accumulation in the middle and lower jiao with fluid retention in the upper jiao causing cough. I used a large dose of Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) adding Bamboo Shavings (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Coptis Rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Date Calyx (Ziziphi Spinosae Calyx). After two doses, he recovered, though thirst persisted. I then used Huang Lian Bai Hu Tang (Coptis White Tiger Decoction) in large doses, resulting in complete recovery.
The exterior pathogen was expelled, but internal injury remained, aggravating old stagnation, causing severe epigastric pain. I used Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Evodia Fruit (Evodiae Fructus), Stir-fried Coptis Rhizome (Coptidis Rhizoma), Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma), Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), White Mustard Seed (Sinapis Semen), Cassia Twig (Cassiae Ramulus), and Charred Dried Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Carbonisatum). One dose stopped the pain. The next day, severe lower abdominal pain occurred. I used Gui Zhi Shao Yao Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Peony Decoction) adding Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Aurantium Fruit (Aurantii Fructus), stopping the pain again. Subsequently, massive distension and acute pain appeared in the chest, hypochondrium, and back, making palpation impossible. The Guan pulses on both sides were scattered and large, indicating blood stasis. I used Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel and Magnesium Chloride Decoction) for two doses, passing one to two dou of dark purple-black blood. The back felt relieved, but chest and hypochondrium remained distended, with a metallic taste in the mouth. I used Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) for one dose, followed by Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma), Child’s Urine-processed Moutan Bark (Moutan Cortex), Salvia Root (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix), Biota Tops (Biotae Cacumen), and Black Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus). Several doses led to recovery. Finally, use Dang Gui Jiang (Angelica Paste) for one portion to restore vitality.
A man in his thirties suffered from Taiyang disease with headache, anhidrosis, and fever. Due to erroneous medication causing abnormal sweating, heat accumulated internally, manifesting as widespread red-purple macules. I used Fang Feng Tong Sheng San (Siler and Sage Powder to Unblock the Interior) removing Mang Xiao (Mirabilitum), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), and Hua Shi (Talcum), adding Cowherb Seed (Bursae Fructus). Two doses cleared the heat and resolved the macules. However, deficiency sweating, extreme thirst, and sore throat persisted. I used Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) adding Scrophularia Root (Scrophulariae Radix) and Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba - *Note: Context suggests Sheng Ma Cimicifugae Rhizoma likely intended given "Sheng Ma" in text, but text says "Xuan Shen Sheng Ma", usually Cimicifugae Rhizoma*) in small amounts. Two doses stopped pain and thirst. Later, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) removing Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma), adding Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Tuber) for five to six doses brought stability.
A woman aged twenty-six or twenty-seven suffered from anger, causing fire to attack upwards, resulting in swelling of the neck, ears, head, and face. A doctor used Fang Feng Tong Sheng San (Siler and Sage Powder to Unblock the Interior) for one dose, reducing swelling. Three months later, malaria developed, occurring every other day, starting with chills followed by fever, very severe, with loss of consciousness, nearing death. I diagnosed string-tight pulses in all six positions, especially firm at the Guan positions. This indicated excessive Liver Wood attacking Spleen Earth, causing malaria. I first used Yue Ju Er Chen Tang (Regulating Qi and Two-Cured Decoction) adding Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix), Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix), White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), taken on non-paroxysm days. Next, I used Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix), Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Angelica Sinensis Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix), Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Ligusticum Rhizome (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Tsaoko Cardamom Fruit (Amomi Fructus), Plum Fruit (Pruni Mume Fructus), Purslane (Portulacae Herba), Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Jujube (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus) decocted, taken on paroxysm days at dawn on an empty stomach. Malaria stopped that day. Later, Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) adding Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma), Fritillaria Bulb (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Aurantium Fruit (Aurantii Fructus) for several doses brought stability.
A man with a constitutionally weak physique suffered from Taiyang disease in March. Sweating, vomiting, and purging were all employed, damaging the Spleen and Stomach. After recovery, lack of proper regulation led to fatigue in May. Suddenly fainting, cold limbs, unconsciousness, foaming at the mouth, profuse cold sweat, inability to swallow water. I diagnosed floating-small Chi pulses, floating-large Guan pulses like fingers, empty on deep pressure, and short-choppy irregular Chi pulses. I stated this was extreme deficiency requiring major tonification to survive. I first used Schizonepeta Spike (Schizonepetae Spica) 5 qian, added Ginger Juice (Zingiberis Succus) and Bamboo Sap (Bambusae Succus) 1 liang each, administered first to stabilize. Then Ginseng (Ginseng Radix) 3 qian, Astragalus Root (Astragali Radix) 2 qian, Angelica Sinensis Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2.5 qian each, Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 1.5 qian, Schisandra Berry (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 1 qian, and Prepared Aconite Root (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 2 qian, made into a large decoction. Two doses restored life. Later, Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Great Tonifying Decoction of Ten Ingredients) removing Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus), adding Gastrodia Tuber (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) 1 qian and Saposhnikovia Root (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 8 fen, regulated him to full recovery.
A resident of Zhongshui Village, Changtian County, in his thirties, was obese and robust, not fond of alcohol or sex. Due to labor and external worry, he suddenly suffered stroke-like symptoms: left-sided hemiplegia, abundant phlegm-saliva, able to speak but with splitting headache, normal bowel and bladder movements. Pulses were surging-slipping, forceful but not rapid. This was Phlegm-Fire Stroke-Like Syndrome. I first used Zhi Bao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) as a guide, then decocted Arisaema Rhizome (Arisaematis Rhizoma) and Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 2 qian each, Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Poria (Poria), White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 8 fen each, Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Gypsum) 1 qian each, Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1.5 qian, Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 5 fen, Gastrodia Tuber (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Ligusticum Rhizome (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Notopterygium Rhizome (Notopterygii Rhizoma), Saposhnikovia Root (Saposhnikoviae Radix) 8 fen each, Silkworm (Bombyx Batryticatus), Centipede (Scolopendra), and Safflower (Carthami Flos) 5 fen each. Made into a large decoction, taken with Ginger Juice and Bamboo Sap. One dose reduced symptoms by half. External use of Dun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) in the afternoon. Modified this formula subsequently for several doses until full recovery.
A young woman with weak constitution and frequent illness gave birth in early February with great difficulty. Later suffered severe left hip pain like a chicken beak biting, lower abdominal urgency, vomiting upon smelling food, unable to eat. Treated as Blood Deficiency or Depression-Fire without effect. Another doctor treated as deficiency using Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction) with only 5-7 fen of Ginseng (Ginseng Radix); more caused panting. They said depression should not use Ginseng, using Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) and Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma) alternating with Ba Wu Tang. By March, she was emaciated and painful. I diagnosed surging-large pulses empty on deep pressure, indicating extreme deficiency. I used Ginseng (Ginseng Radix) 3 qian, [Astragalus Root (Astragali Radix)] 1.5 qian, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 7 fen, Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 1 qian, Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 fen, Poria (Poria) 1 qian, and Prepared Aconite Root (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) 5 fen. Others argued against high-dose Ginseng. I explained: Great deficiency requires great tonification; slight deficiency requires slight tonification. Using slight tonification for great deficiency fails to subdue pathogens, causing panting. They agreed. One dose divided into three servings reduced pain by 70%. She slept peacefully that night. Continued this formula for 20 doses, increasing Ginseng to 5 qian, achieving full recovery.
A 28-year-old man suffered from Jaundice, with yellow body and eyes, thirst, and wasting. Pulses were floating-stringy on light pressure, short-choppy on deep pressure. Previous doctors used Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) as chief herb with Yin Chen Wu Ling San (Artemisia Capillaris and Five-Ingredient Poria Decoction) plus Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) and Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus) without effect. Another doctor used Hu Po Wan (Amber Pill), worsening the condition. I diagnosed fine pulses and learned of chronic alcohol and sexual excess damaging Lung (Metal) and Kidney (Water). Treating only symptoms failed. I used Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Child’s Urine-processed Phellodendron Bark (Phellodendri Cortex), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Goji Berry (Lycii Fructus), Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Chrysanthemum Flower (Chrysanthemi Flos) in large doses for over 100 doses until full recovery. Temporary blindness occurred for two days. Later used Ren Shen Gu Ben Wan (Ginseng Solidify Root Pill) added with Phellodendron Bark (Phellodendri Cortex) and Anemarrhena Rhizome (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), alternating with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) added with Chrysanthemum Flower (Chrysanthemi Flos). Eyesight and health fully restored.
A man in his forties suffered from alcohol injury and cold invasion, causing stabbing epigastric pain, vomiting, and drowsiness. Unable to keep anything down for seven days. Pulses were deep-micro and powerless. This was drinking injury above and cold injury below, cold-heat clashing causing Guan Ge (Obstruction-Reversal) syndrome, preventing drug intake. I first used Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) adding Agastache Herb (Agastachis Herba), Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), decocted and taken with Si Ji Bao Sheng Ding (Four Accumulations Protect Life Tablet). Taken slowly in small cups, no vomiting after 1-2 hours, craving porridge, pulse rising. Six Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) for ten doses cured him.
A 7-year-old girl suffered from lower abdominal pain radiating to the heart, hypochondrium, and back. All drugs failed. I saw white spots on her face, diagnosing worm pain. Too weak for strong vermifuges. I first used Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) adding Sour Plum Fruit (Pruni Mume Fructus) and Sichuan Pepper (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) for four doses. Then used Bing Lang San (Areca Seed Powder) and Qu Su Rou (Quisqualis Fructus Flesh) decocted and taken orally. Fully recovered. Regulated with Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder).
A wealthy young woman suffered from long-term depression injuring Blood, causing Blood Deficiency and Qi Stagnation, with occasional deficiency fire. Menstruation every 2-3 months, severe pain before onset, pale and scant flow, red cheeks in afternoon without fever, epigastric fullness, aversion to food, vomiting if forced. Pulses were string-choppy, floating-slipping at Chi. Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Magnolia Bark (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Amomum Fruit (Amomi Fructus), and Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma) doubled for several patches brought relief. Before and during menstruation, Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Costus Root (Saussureae Radix), Corydalis Rhizome (Corydalidis Rhizoma), Safflower (Carthami Flos), and Moutan Bark (Moutan Cortex). After menstruation, Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction) with doubled Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma). Empty stomach took Ba Zhen Wan (Eight Treasure Pill) added with Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma), Aquilaria Wood (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), and Motherwort Extract (Leonuri Fructus Extract) as pills. Half a year of treatment cured her. She bore a son the next year.
A woman near forty gave birth in August; fetus died in uterus, delivered after eight days. Postpartum, a spindle-sized mass in lower abdomen rushed up to the heart, unbearable pain, worse at night. Doctors used blood-invigorating and Qi-moving aromatic-dry drugs, worsening condition. In November, I diagnosed string-choppy-rapid pulses, severe at Guan. Liver Wood attacking Spleen with sinking Middle Qi. Used Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) adding Prepared Aconite Root (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Ginseng (Ginseng Radix). Aconite 1 qian, one dose. Followed by Jia Yi Mu Wan (Modified Motherwort Pill), one dose cured. Later used Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba) as chiefs, Citrus Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Cyperus Rhizome (Cyperi Rhizoma), Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Aquilaria Wood (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) as guides. Over ten doses cured.
A man aged 36-37, robust, fond of alcohol, became angry after drinking due to frustration. Chest oppression, plum-pit qi in throat (globus hystericus). Pulses string-tight-slipping, large Chi. Internal fire and stagnant phlegm obstructing clear pathways. Used Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) adding Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus), White Cardamom Fruit (Amomi Fructus), and Reed Rhizome (Phragmitis Rhizoma) for several patches bringing relief. Then Pear Juice, Leek Juice, Radish Juice, Ginger Juice, [Unknown Juice], Reed Rhizome Juice, Kudzu Root Juice, and White Honey, each 1 bowl, boiled into paste. External use: Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 0.5 jin, Ginseng (Ginseng Radix) 4 liang, Poria (Poria) 4 liang, powdered, mixed, sealed in jar with salt mud, boiled for 3 incense burns, detoxified. Taken with boiling water morning, noon, evening. Evening took Dun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) 1 qian with tea. Six months of treatment cured. Effective for middle-aged esophageal obstruction.
A clan uncle suffered heart-Spleen damage from labor and overthinking, with history of sweating and Fei Qi (abdominal mass). Spring anger and cold caused severe vomiting, unable to take medicine/food. Pulses deep-slow-string-choppy. Initial doctors used Xiang Sha Yang Wei Tang (Costus and Amomum Stomach-Nourishing Decoction), Ban Xia Zhu Ru Tang (Pinellia and Bambusa Caulis in Taeniam Decoction) with丁香 (Caryophylli Flos), and Zhi Zhong Tang (Regulate Middle Decoction) without effect. I diagnosed irritability, blue face/red cheeks, yellow lips/eyes, slow pulse—Yang syndrome with Yin pulse, difficult to treat. First used Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) with Ginseng (Ginseng Radix) and Aconite Root (Aconiti Radix) 5 fen each to probe. Slight relief, then vomiting resumed. I insisted on Aconite (Aconiti Radix) to restore Yang. Family hesitated. Relatives urged, so Ginseng (Ginseng Radix) and Aconite Root (Aconiti Radix) 3 qian each added to Zhen Wu Tang (True Warrior Decoction). Moxibustion on Qihai (CV6) while taking medicine. Sweating stopped restlessness and vomiting. Coma for six days, waking on seventh. Yin excess inside, Yang decline outside; Aconite restored initial Yang, causing instability/coma. Later used Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Angelica Sinensis (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) as chiefs, Goji Berry (Lycii Fructus), Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Sour Jujube Seed (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), and Longan Flesh (Longan Arillus) as assistants, taken morning/evening. Morning Deer Antler Glue (Cervi Cornu Colla) 2-3 qian. Hundred days to full recovery.
