Forty-nine years old. When calculating fetal qi, subtract the mother's age. Then add one more cycle of seven (i.e., 49 + 7 = 56). If a male is born, both son and daughter are complete.
For births in the first half of the year, calculate according to the number of years skipped; for births in the second half of the year, calculate according to the current year's count.
From Lichun (Start of Spring) to Chunfen (Spring Equinox) is the First Qi. From Qingming (Pure Brightness) to Xiaoman (Grain Full) is the Second Qi. From Mangzhong (Grain in Ear) to Dashu (Great Heat) is the Third Qi.
From Liqiu (Start of Autumn) to Qiufen (Autumn Equinox) is the Fourth Qi. From Hanlu (Cold Dew) to Xiaoxue (Minor Snow) is the Fifth Qi. From Daxue (Major Snow) to Dahan (Great Cold) is the Sixth Qi.
(Jia and Ji years correspond to Earth Yun [Earth Movement]; Yi and Geng years correspond to Metal Yun; Bing and Xin years correspond to Water Yun; Ding and Ren years correspond to Wood Yun; Wu and Gui years correspond to Fire Yun.)
(Three Yin and Three Yang, Metal, Earth, Fire are called "Wugen" [Five Roots], along with Fire, Wood, Water.)
Heaven and Earth constitute one Taiji (Supreme Ultimate). The human body constitutes one microcosm of Heaven and Earth. The Five Elements operate within Heaven and Earth, starting from Heaven generating One Water, Water generating Wood, Wood generating Fire, Fire generating Earth, Earth generating Metal, and Metal regenerating Water.
The Five Elements distribute sequentially, forming Three Yin and Three Yang, which is what is referred to as "Wugen." As mentioned in the *Taixuan Jing*, regarding Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, with Wood above and Water below, it symbolizes endless mutual generation, reflecting the numerical principles of Hetu (River Map). In the *Book of Documents* (*Shangshu*), Water, Fire, Metal, Wood, and Earth represent the mutual overcoming of the Five Elements, formed by the numerical principles of Luoshu (Lo Shu Square). The human body is the same. Humans are born endowing themselves with the essence of Heaven and Earth; thus, the qi of the Five Elements hides within the Zang organs and manifests in the Fu organs. From Kidney Water nourishing Liver Wood, Liver Wood nourishing Heart Monarch Fire, Heart Monarch Fire nourishing Sanjiao Minister Fire, Minister Fire nourishing Spleen Earth, Spleen Earth nourishing Lung Metal, and Lung Metal regenerating Kidney Water, this is achieved through mutual generation.
Moreover, when Water generates Wood, Water is the Mother and Wood is the Child. When Wood generates Fire, Wood is drained (qi stolen), so Water becomes angry and overcomes Fire. This is known as "When the child suffers qi theft, the mother strives fiercely." When Fire generates Earth, Fire is the Mother and Earth is the Child. Seeing Fire overcome by Water, Earth becomes angry and overcomes Water. This is known as "When the mother is injured by the ghost, the child comes to rescue." Mutual generation and overcoming turn endlessly; this is the Taiji within the human body. Therefore, those skilled in pulse diagnosis can perceive the work of creation, skillfully comprehend the orthodoxy of Yin and Yang, exhaust the subtleties of movement, and investigate the losses of all things. Although pulses are divided into six positions and their variations are myriad, physicians categorize them into Seven Exterior, Eight Interior, and Nine Dao pulses, conducting detailed examinations and discussions with profound clarity. There are thousands of books on this subject, comprising tens of millions of words, meticulously complete. Diagrams may have omissions, but in practice, there are gains and losses, and most fail to grasp the essential mechanisms. Beyond Taishi and Taisu, people do not know that the Five Elements of the masses in Heaven and Earth are scattered throughout the body, whereas the Five Elements of an individual are concentrated. Scattered qi is hard to discern, while concentrated qi is easy to see. Thus, gentlemen gain insight through pulse diagnosis. Before Yang qi dissipates and Yin qi disperses, within the span of lifting and pressing fingers, one can know what kind of person this individual will become in life and what role they will assume. Wealth or poverty, longevity or short life, uprightness or wickedness, are as clear as distinguishing black from white or counting one and two. Matters unknown even to parents, wives, and children, and unperceived by mind and body, are all clearly understood. This is due solely to reaching the level of principle. Taisu Pulse Diagnosis takes the Heart as the master of destiny; the Heart is the Monarch. The ruler of one person, with the Small Intestine as migration, because Will resides here. What the Heart knows is executed by decree; auspiciousness, disaster, regret, and humiliation arise from here. The Gallbladder is Fortune and Virtue; the Gallbladder is the Qi of the Liver, receiving the function of the Heart. The Heart regards the Liver as Official Rank; the Liver is generated by Water, being the Mother of the Heart, possessing thick Heaven Qi. The Lung is Parents; the Lung symbolizes Yuebei (Moon Star), representing the image of parents, governing the First Qi. The Large Intestine is Wife and Children; the Large Intestine symbolizes Jiedou, receiving Lung Qi and coordinating with the First Qi. The Stomach is Wealth; the Stomach receives residual Qi from the Spleen. The Spleen is Fields and Houses; Spleen Qi nourishes all things. the Sanjiao is Salary and Horses; Minister Fire receives orders from the Heart. By deducing from this, nothing remains obscure. Furthermore, the Heart pulse belongs to Fire nature. If the pulse is rapid but does not reach nine beats per breath cycle, stopping at eight, corresponding to Qian One, Dui Two, Li Three, Zhen Four, Xun Five, Kan Six, Gen Seven, Kun Eight, it transforms into the Qian trigram. A person encountering this has the number of Excess Yang, leading to extreme loneliness and poverty; why speak of other numerical outcomes? The Heart governs auspiciousness and disaster, ruling the qi fate before age fifteen. Its body is floating and surging. If it stops at one beat, adults with this pulse have noble, strong, and vigorous personalities, pure and unceasing. If encountered by petty persons, it indicates a light and irritable nature, prone to acute illnesses, yet remaining upright. If it stops at two beats, the personality is harmonious and pleasant, mind peaceful, respectful to others, and respected in return. In success, like Yi Yin or Fu Yue; in adversity, like Zeng Shen or Yan Hui, purely gentlemanly, devoid of selfish desires. If it stops at three beats, the person is decisive, smart, and agile, bright and clear, treating others with full consideration, truly a scholar of literature and a loyal person. If it stops at four beats, the personality is irritable and violent, intolerant, strict in managing the household, honest with others, handling affairs appropriately without selfish harm, also intelligent and literary, though prone to mood swings. If it stops at five beats, the personality is smart and adaptable, knowledgeable and capable, eloquent in debate, skilled in diplomacy, but unstable in character, between gentleman and petty person, good at competition, easily shaken, either a member of the nine schools of thought or a wanderer/knight-errant. If it stops at six beats, the personality hates treachery, is sycophantic, deceitful, and evil, committing crimes and slander, opposing morality and virtue, ranging from petty theft to heavenly rebellion, extremely vicious. If it stops at seven beats, the personality is foolish and ignorant, unable to distinguish grains, working as a farmer or porter, brave but lacking strategy, or vulgar and idle, like a foolish woman. If it stops at eight beats, the personality is slow and gentle, tolerant, compassionate to orphans and widows, disdainful of wealth and fond of giving, content with poverty and the Dao, not competing with others, nor bullied, either a gentleman elder or a hermit in mountains and forests. If the pulse is crystal clear like pearls, fortune and virtue are deep,逍遥 (carefree) beyond worldly limits, transcending the mundane.
The Gallbladder pulse governs the qi fate before ages fifteen and twenty-five. Its body is floating and wiry. Upon palpation, it resembles the elegance of zither strings. Whether large or small, wiry or hooked, floating and responsive, distinct and mixed-free. Reaching fifty beats or more indicates high official rank (San Gong) and ancestral blessings. Stopping at forty beats indicates position as Governor or Magistrate. Stopping at twenty beats indicates assistant roles. If fewer beats but generally clear, still indicates minor official posts. If beats are mixed and uneven, no official success within ten years. If surging and unstable, officials lose posts, commoners face lawsuits.
The Liver pulse governs the qi fate before age fifteen, crucial for the body. Its body is deep and wiry. Reaching forty-five beats or more indicates San Gong rank. With slight choppy quality, even a Chancellor faces difficulties. Reaching thirty beats indicates Governor/Magistrate. Reaching twenty beats indicates miscellaneous offices. Choppy and scattered pulses are similar. Clear and smooth pulses like pearls indicate control over censorial powers. Combined with slippery Lung pulse, indicates power over life and death. If all three positions are wiry and meet beat standards, holding high office, dominating regions, becoming generals, controlling life/death, establishing seals, and enfeoffing lords. If beats are insufficient, still indicates military leadership (Thousand/Myriad Commander). If surging, all six positions wiry, Heart responds to Kan, indicates military banditry, exile. Combined with six-pulse overcoming, indicates execution and dismemberment. If pulse scatters unclearly, indicates lowly and poor status.
Spleen and Stomach pulses govern post-twenty-five late-life fate. Body is slightly moderate. Reaching fifty beats indicates great wealth. Thirty beats indicates medium wealth. Below twenty-five beats indicates modest wealth. If beats are few but clear, health and prosperity in old age. Floating and responsive indicates wealth without land; deep and responsive indicates land without wealth. Both floating and deep responsive indicates abundant land and wealth. Hong-Huan (Surging-Moderate) pulse indicates inheriting family estate. Floating-Choppy indicates acquiring wife's wealth or wife helping establish family. Disrespectful pulse indicates internal power struggles. Slight Slippery pulse indicates unruly sons ruining family, lustful wives, self-indulgence and inability to recover. Irregular beats (fast/slow, large/small) indicate lifelong poverty. Surging/Dashing pulse indicates ruin of ancestral estate, destitution, begging, and shamelessness.
Large Intestine pulse is slightly short and clear upon response, indicating virtuous wife and filial children, lifelong protection. Three-to-five beats indicate more sons than daughters. Three-to-four beats indicate more daughters than sons. Surging pulse indicates harming wife and children. Combined with six-pulse overcoming, indicates lifelong childlessness, solitude, or monastic life. Slippery pulse indicates adopting sons, marrying off daughters, or relying on sons-in-law for old age.
Lung pulse body is short and choppy. If clear and long-lasting with slight moderation, indicates four generations under one roof or both parents alive, enjoying filial piety and joy. Hardest to achieve, reserved by Creation. Stopping at three-to-five beats indicates harming mother first. Surging and unstable indicates losing parents in youth. Continuous moderate-slippery indicates lifelong lack of non-kin support.
Left Chi pulse is deep and slippery; Right Chi pulse is surging and slippery. This reflects initial endowment of Heaven and Earth parental Qi. Thick endowment brings fortune and longevity; thin endowment brings brevity and early death. This is fixed. Wise observers examine left/right to determine general longevity, then specific years, ensuring accuracy. Loss of both Chi pulses indicates deficient external kidneys. Surging Right Chi indicates disaster among servants/staff or theft. Surging Left Chi with irregular speed indicates lust and frivolity. These six pulses specifically govern Five Element fixed numbers. Combined: Heart pulse surging-wiry, Sanjiao pulse surging-moderate indicates Monarch-Minister harmony; officials rise, commoners get lucky breaks. Heart pulse surging-slippery, Sanjiao pulse surging-wiry indicates Monarch-Minister discord, implying other changes. Six pulses receiving parental Qi indicate parental favor unlike other siblings. Six pulses returning to maternal womb indicate sons like Zeng Shen and Min Zi who revitalize the family. Among six pulses, Dai pulse (intermittent) is most feared. One pulse taking Dai means one Zang organ loses vitality. For example, Spleen normally lacks moderate body; if suddenly wiry-long-floating-large, it indicates temporary overcoming, allowing prediction of death date. For seasonal annual cycles, infer by respective positions: receiving Mother Qi seeks fame; receiving Child Qi seeks wealth. This should be known. Skilled deduction ensures no errors.
