Lingyang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction): Treats residual toxins in children after variola or varicella that fail to resolve, attacking upwards to the eyes, causing corneal opacity (翳), photophobia (羞明), excessive discharge and tearing, redness, swelling, and inability to open the eyes.
Ingredients: Lingyang Jiao (Antelope Horn, *Saiga Tataricae Cornu*, shaved), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, *Scutellariae Radix*), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*), Cao Jueming (Cassia Seed, *Cassiae Semen*), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed, *Plantaginis Semen*), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, *Cimicifugae Rhizoma*), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, *Saposhnikoviae Radix*), Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, *Rhei Radix et Rhizoma*), Mang Xiao (Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas*). All in equal parts.
Usage: Take one dose, add one cup of water, decoct until half a cup remains, strain, and take while slightly warm.
Analysis: In this formula, Lingyang Jiao is the Sovereign herb (Jun), primarily for brightening the eyes. Sheng Ma tonifies the Taiyin meridian to solidify the interior and expel toxins; Gan Cao tonifies the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian to solidify the exterior and resist pathogens, serving as Ministers (Chen). Fang Feng raises clear yang, and Che Qian Zi drains turbid yin, serving as Assistants (Zuo). Cao Jueming treats redness, pain, and tearing; Huang Qin, Da Huang, and Mang Xiao attack entrenched heat, serving as Guides (Shi). However, Da Huang and Mang Xiao are greatly bitter and cold; wise physicians should adjust dosages based on deficiency or excess. If eye disease occurs within twenty-one days post-rash, Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxification and Macule-Dispersing Decoction) is indicated.
Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxification and Macule-Dispersing Decoction): Treats eye diseases arising in children before twenty-one days have passed since the onset of macules/rashes; other symptoms and treatments are the same as above.
Ingredients: Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome and Root, *Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix*), Sheng Ma, Fang Feng, Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem, *Ephedrae Herba*) (each 5 fen); Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, *Coptidis Rhizoma*), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, *Angelicae Sinensis Radix*), Jiu Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark processed with wine, *Phellodendri Cortex*), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit, *Forsythiae Fructus*) (each 3 fen); Ben Cao (Ligusticum Rhizome, *Ligustici Rhizoma*), Jiu Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root processed with wine), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, *Rehmanniae Radix*), Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, *Atractylodis Rhizoma* soaked in rice wash and stir-fried), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome, *Chuanxiong Rhizoma*), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root, *Bupleuri Radix*) (each 2 fen); Xi Xin (Asarum Root and Rhizome, *Asari Radix et Rhizoma*), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, *Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma*), Sheng Huang Qin, Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*), Sheng Gan Cao, Su Mu (Sappan Wood, *Sappan Lignum*), Ge Gen (Pueraria Root, *Puerariae Lobatae Radix*) (each 1 fen); Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit, *Evodiae Fructus*), Hong Hua (Carthamus Flower, *Carthami Flos*) (each 0.5 fen).
Usage: Take one dose, add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains, strain, and take while slightly warm.
Analysis: This formula’s efficacy is not limited to the eyes but is specifically established for macules. It is used for eye conditions because the toxin is still vigorous and has spread to the eyes. The eruption of macules begins with Bladder Ren Water overcoming Small Intestine Bing Fire; Qiang Huo and Ben Cao treat the Foot-Taiyang bladder meridian. Next, Kidney Gui Water overcomes Heart Fire; Xi Xin enters the Shaoyin kidney meridian, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Finally, the two fires become vigorous and counteract Cold Water; thus, Huang Qin, Huang Lian, and Huang Bo are used to treat the two fires (processed with wine for reverse treatment); Sheng Di Huang nourishes Cold Water, serving as a Minister. Ma Huang, Fang Feng, and Chuan Xiong raise yang qi and dispel wind pathogens; Ge Gen and Chai Hu resolve and guide out toxic pathogens; Sheng Ma disperses stagnation; Bai Zhu and Cang Zhu remove dampness and harmonize the stomach; Sheng Gan Cao greatly reduces various heats, serving as Assistants. When qi fails to circulate up and down, Wu Zhu Yu and Chen Pi unblock it; when blood fails to flow smoothly, Su Mu and Hong Hua regulate it; Dang Gui heals malignant sores; Lian Qiao removes guest heat, serving as Guides. The Sovereign-Minister-Assistant-Guide structure here follows reverse and direct principles, embodying complete therapeutic methods; only those who understand cosmic transformation and drug properties can comprehend it. Before macules appear, if a child has cold ear tips, yawning, sleep startles, sneezing, and dry eyes, one knows macules will emerge; administer this medicine urgently. Severe cases will become mild, mild cases will resolve immediately, preventing secondary outbreaks.
