1. Formula for Reducing Deficient Heat of the Five Zang Organs, Four Seasons Modified Chaihu Yinzi Decoction.
In the three winter months, add: Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 8 fen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 8 fen), Arecae Pericarpium (Dafubinglang, 4 pieces, used with peel and seed), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 5 fen), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 5 fen), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 7 fen).
In the three spring months, add: Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi); reduce: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu). Total six herbs.
In the three summer months, add: Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 3 fen), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi, 5 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 3 fen). Total eight herbs.
In the three autumn months, add: Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 3 fen). Total six herbs.
The above herbs are each coarsely crushed, divided into three doses. One dose is boiled in three sheng of water to obtain two sheng, taken warm in three divided doses. Administer every time a person walks four or five li. If there is stagnation in the four limbs, add a small amount of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao). Each dose is divided into three small doses. Each small dose is boiled in one sheng of water to obtain seven ge, taken warm. The dregs are combined for one more decoction, totaling four administrations. (Suspected not to be a formula by Zhang Zhongjing.)
2. Long-term Administration of Heleli Pill Formula (Suspected not to be a formula by Zhang Zhongjing.)
Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (Heleli), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo) (each 3 liang).
The above three herbs are powdered, mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take twenty pills with wine, increasing gradually to thirty pills.
3. Sanwu Beiji Pill Formula (See Qianjin Fang; Sikong Pei Xiu suggested it could also be used as a powder. First mix into a liquid, then pour into the mouth, allowing it to enter between the teeth, which is very effective.)
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 1 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 1 liang), Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 1 liang, peeled, heart removed, roasted, and ground externally like fat).
The above drugs must be fine and fresh. First grind Dahuang and Ganjiang into powder, add Badou, and pound together for one thousand strokes to make a powder. Mixing with honey to form pills is also good. Store in a sealed container to prevent loss of potency. It treats various sudden abdominal diseases. If suffering from evil qi invasion or sudden fullness and pain in the heart and abdomen like needle pricks, shortness of breath, locked jaw, or sudden death (Shijue), administer three or four pills the size of a soybean with warm water or wine. If unable to swallow, hold the head up and force it down the throat. Recovery should occur shortly. If not recovered, give three more pills. Abdominal borborygmus will follow, leading to vomiting and purging and recovery. If the jaw is locked, teeth must be pried open to administer.
4. Zishi Hanshi San (Cold Food Powder) for Treating Shanghan to Prevent Recurrence (See Qianjin Yifang.)
Fluorite (Zishiyingshi), Quartz (Bai Shiyingshi), Halloysitum Rubrum (Chishizhi), Stalactitum (Zhongru, pounded and refined), Tetrastigma Caulis (Gualougen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Veneris Testis (Wenge), Podophylli Fructus (Guijiu) (each 10 parts), Kaolinite (Taiyiyuliang, 10 parts, burned), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, processed, peeled), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi, peeled, each 4 parts).
The above thirteen herbs are pounded into a powder. Take one fangcun bi with wine.
5. Emergency Rescue for Sudden Death
Crush Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xie) to extract juice and instill into the nose.
Another formula:
Cut blood from the comb of a rooster, blow into the nose using a tube.
Boil Porcini Adipis (Zhuzhi, size of an egg) with Acetum (Ku Jiu, 1 sheng) until boiling, then instill into the throat.
Apply Chicken Liver and Blood (Jigan ji xue) to the face, surround with ash, and revival occurs immediately.
Swallow fourteen Soybean seeds (Dadou) mixed with Albumen Ovi (Jizi bai) and wine.
6. Emergency Rescue for Sudden Death with High Fever
Alumen (Fanshi, half sheng), boil in fifteen sheng of water until dissolved, soak feet in it until the ankles are submerged.
7. Emergency Rescue for Sudden Death with Closed Eyes
Straddle a horse facing the patient's face, crush Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xie) to extract juice and instill into the ears, blow Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (Saojia) powder into the nose. Immediate effect.
8. Emergency Rescue for Sudden Death with Open Mouth and Opisthotonos
Moxibustion on the four nails of hands and feet, fourteen moxa cones each. Drink Wudu Zhugao San (Five-Toxin Various Ointment Powders) (contains Crotonis Fructus/Badou).
9. Emergency Rescue for Sudden Death with Flaccid Limbs and Incontinence
Boil Horse Dung (Mashi, 1 sheng) in thirty dou of water to obtain twenty dou, use to wash the body. Also take Cow Dung (Niudong, 1 sheng), mix with warm wine, and instill into the mouth. Moxibustion on points below the heart (one cun), above the umbilicus (three cun), and below the umbilicus (four cun), one hundred cones each. Recovery ensues.
10. Emergency Rescue for Pediatric Sudden Death with Vomiting and Diarrhea of Unknown Cause
One pill of Dog Feces (Goushi), squeeze out juice and instill. If dry feces are used, boil in water to extract juice.
11. Corpse-like Coma (Shijue): Pulse moves but no breath. Qi blockage prevents flow, hence stillness and apparent death.
Treatment: Pulse and signs see previous volume.
Insert Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Changpu) powder into both nostrils and blow. Place Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) powder under the tongue.
Another formula:
Take one square cun of hair from the left temple, burn to ash, mix with wine, and instill into the throat. Immediate revival.
12. Huanhun Tang (Return Soul Decoction) for Sudden Death due to Evil Invasion.
(Qianjin Fang states: Treats sudden evil invasion, ghost strike, flying corpse, sudden cessation of breath, loss of consciousness, absence of pulse, locked jaw. Remove teeth before administering decoction. If decoction cannot go down, part hair left and right, grasp shoulders and pull. Add one sheng more if needed. Revival occurs shortly.)
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 3 liang, remove joints), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 70 seeds, remove skin and tips), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 liang, honey-fried) (Qianjin uses Cinnamomi Cortex Guizhi/Guixin, 2 liang).
The above three herbs are boiled in eight sheng of water to obtain three sheng. Strain. Have patient swallow in divided doses. Treats all cases of evil invasion.
Another formula:
Radix Allii Tuberosi (Jiu Gen, one bunch), Fructus Mume (Wumei, 27 seeds), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, half sheng, stir-fried).
Boil the above three herbs in ten dou of water. Place the patient's comb in the liquid. Boil three times. If the comb floats, the patient lives; if it sinks, the patient dies. Obtain three sheng, strain, and drink in divided doses.
13. Rescue from Hanging. Even if cold from morning to evening, it can be treated; from evening to morning, it is slightly difficult. This likely refers to excessive anger qi. However, in summer nights are short and hot, so it should still be treatable. Also stated: If the epigastrium is slightly warm, it can be treated even after a day.
Formula:
Slowly untie, do not cut the rope. Lay the patient on bedding. One person steps on both shoulders, gently pulls the hair, keeping tension without releasing. One person presses on the chest, moving repeatedly. One person massages and extends/flexes arms and legs. If stiff, gradually force flexion and press the abdomen. After the time it takes to cook a meal, breath exits the mouth, respiration resumes, eyes open. Continue pressing and guiding, do not rest, avoid overexertion. Shortly after, offer small amounts of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) and thin gruel to moisten the throat, allowing gradual swallowing. If two people blow air into both ears using tubes, it is better. This method is best and ensures survival.
14. For Sudden Death due to Nightmare/Sleep Paralysis (An Si), do not allow cooling; cooling causes death. Treatment: Bend a grass belt, wrap around the patient's navel, have two or three persons urinate into it to warm it. Alternatively, use hot mud mixed with bent grass, or press against the bottom of a clay bowl or chariot wheel hub placed on the patient to collect urine, ensuring it flows away. This is for when resources are scarce and no hot water is available. Urine should be warm like soup. Do not use mud or chariot hubs if they are cold. In summer, hot mud and warm chariot hubs can be used.
15. Rescue from Drowning
Bury the patient in more than two dan of ashes from the stove, from head to toe. Water will flow out from the seven orifices, and life returns.
The above methods for hanging and drowning rescue were created by Zhang Zhongjing. Their ingenuity is extraordinary, beyond common understanding and materia medica descriptions. They are truly great arts for saving lives. In Shanghan treatments, there are several cases of An disease, which are not this type of heat-induced condition (see Waitai Miyao and Zhouhou Beiji Fang).
16. Formula for Falls from Horses and All Bone/Tendon Injuries (See Zhouhou Fang.)
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 1 liang, sliced and soaked, added when decoction is ready), Crimson Silk (Feibo, palm-sized, burned to ash), Tangled Hair (Luafa, egg-sized, burned to ash), Old Cooking Cloth (Ji Yong Chuandanbu, one chi, burned to ash), Decayed Cattail Roots (Baipu, one handful, three cun long), Persicae Semen (Taoren, 49 seeds, remove skin and tips, roasted), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, size of middle finger joint, honey-fried).
The above seven herbs are decocted in urine of a young boy (Tongzi Xiaonian) according to quantity. When ready, add one large cup of wine, then add Dahuang. Strain. Take warm in three divided doses. First, bathe in decoction made from half a decaying cattail mat. Cover with clothing and blankets. Shortly, bowel movements will occur several times, and pain will cease immediately. If discharge and bath water turn red, do not be surprised; this is stasis blood.
