1. The flavors of food and drink are intended to nourish life; however, improper consumption can become harmful. Unless one is taking medicinal drugs or refining elixirs for longevity, how can one abstain from eating? I have observed that people of the present times often fail to regulate their diet and lifestyle, leading to the onset of diseases. If one wishes to preserve health and avoid illness caused by diet, it is essential to know what foods are strictly contraindicated. Certain food flavors are suitable for specific conditions, while others are harmful to the body. Appropriate consumption benefits the physique, whereas inappropriate consumption leads to disease and potentially critical conditions, which are generally difficult to treat. Remedies involving boiling herbs to extract juices for detoxification, although useful for emergencies, should not be consumed hot, as heat exacerbates most toxic conditions. Such remedies should be cooled and drunk cold.
2. In liver diseases, pungent (acrid) flavors are contraindicated; in heart diseases, salty flavors are contraindicated; in spleen diseases, sour flavors are contraindicated; in lung diseases, bitter flavors are contraindicated; in kidney diseases, sweet flavors are contraindicated.
3. One should not eat liver in spring, heart in summer, lungs in autumn, kidneys in winter, and spleen during the late summer seasons. Explanation: One should not eat liver in spring because the Liver Qi is prosperous at this time, while the Spleen Qi is weak. Eating liver would further tonify the Liver, causing the Spleen Qi to deteriorate even more, leading to an incurable state. Furthermore, during the time when Liver Qi is prosperous, one should not allow "death qi" to enter the liver, as it may damage the Hun (Ethereal Soul). If the Liver is not in its prosperous phase (i.e., deficient), consuming liver meat is beneficial. The same logic applies to other organs.
